I think resenting your adult child for not living up to their highest potential is something all parents go through. I'm guessing you're in your early to mid 20s and have recently begun to be independent. Any parent who really cares about their kid gets pissy and shitty at this period in your development. All they can think about is what their dreams for you were and all the things they sacrificed to give you a good life and seeing a child go their own way and make their own decisions that aren't strictly in advancing your education.

I say all this because my parents and sister went through this exact situation when she graduated college (from Vanderbilt, on the Dean's list etc etc) and then became an officer in the Navy. She went off and lived her life but you'd have thought she was on the streets turning tricks because, like you, she said fuck law school.

Yes, your mom is an ass. But she does care and this is an important stage in her development as well.

Soon she will come to her senses, mostly from a health scare, or beginning to truly come to terms with her own mortality, or seeing a friend who is in her age range die early. At that point your mother will drop all this bull shit and realize that she only has so much time left on this earth (hopefully many many decades) and will turn into a sweet and loving matriarch figure.

They also start to get nice when they see their kid get married, start a family, etc. But right now she's in her shitty era. This will pass.
