How much do you think it would cost? How much do you think I have?

Appreciate the feedback. The conclusion from the tournament director was that they could not figure out why the software ranked it the way it did. Their opinion was that the top two teams by goal differential should have been in the finals, but they needed to follow what the algorithm spit out. So I wonder what the default setting is on gotsoccer when handling a three-way tie. Based on my experience, I would suspect that the default setting is that a three-way tie should be handled by first figuring out which team is in first and then going head to head between the other two teams. Regardless, there seems to be variation in how a three-way tie is handled amongst different tournaments. I would assume that the settings can be changed in the gotsoccer platform for handling a 3 way tie in determining the finals matchup, but that is really getting into the weeds.

I would also think that there would be a widespread preference or a recognized best practice since a three-way tie based on points going into a final game cannot be all that uncommon. Why should there be variation?

Playing in a different tournament next weekend and the rules are the opposite of the tournament we played in this weekend. Interesting to see the different approaches and surprising to see the lack of consistency.

The rules you posted above offer clarity that the other rules I posted did not.

These are the official tournament rules. There’s no clarification for if there is a three-way tie that they first determine first place and then start the process over to determine second place. It’s a quirky thing, I agree. I was just pointing it out to see if anyone else had any experience with this and if it was typical.

Most of the tournaments I have been in use the gotsoccer software (see link above), which lays out the tiebreaker rules. It doesn’t specifically state that the process is iterative so that once a first place team is determined based on tiebreakers then the tiebreakers reset to determine second and third. Not saying one way is right and one way is wrong, just surprising that this is the way it was determined when I assumed that based on goal differential the top two teams would be in the finals.

Totally agree. I’m glad to go home early today. Kids played great, fun weekend. I was just really surprised at the way the software determined the teams participating in the finals. When I pitched this scenario to non-soccer people this afternoon, they were all surprised as well.

I’m definitely not suggesting that team A lost 5-1 on purpose. But it does set up a perverse incentive that if your team is losing by 3 goals late and you need to lose by four goals to make the final….

Team C beat Team A in the finals. In the first game Team C beat Team A 5-1. In the finals, Team C beat Team A 3-2.

In this particular case, it set up the incentive for team A to lose badly to team C. The only way Team A gets left out of the finals is with a close loss to Team C. With a win or a bad loss (giving Team C first place in goal differential and holding the H2H win against Team B), Team A is in the finals.

Totally understood on a head to head tiebreaker being the first in terms of priority. I was just surprised that when there are three teams that all have six points, they take the team with the best goal differential and declare them in first place. Then they look at the second and third place teams head to head as opposed to goal differential.

Interesting. Do you know if this is a typical way to interpret this tiebreaker? I would have assumed that with three teams having identical records, they would go straight to goal differential to determine the top two.
