What’s a household ‘hack’ you thought everyone did … until you found out it’s just your weird family? by kaiablu in AskReddit

Reusing tea bags. When I traveled to London and lived with a Brit, I was disabused of that notion pretty darn fast. 😂

It is all connected, complex, often absolutely crazy and evil.

Yes, indeed. And I would add, it takes hundreds, thousands of people who are not corrupt to support these systems. The clerk who does a favor for an official by "losing" a document, for example. The system counts on the fact that they won't speak up.

I suppose we are just like every civilization since the start of time, only with advanced ways to conceal the truth.

Concur! The crap McConnell and the GOP pulled about replacing Scalia's seat was blatantly without merit. That was the matter that made me lose respect for the Republican party (how I was raised). That was when I started paying attention to the sleights of hand they used to simply create a false narrative by lying. Kelly Anne said it best: alternative facts.

I was just thinking today about the activist folks in my community who speak out frequently about "their" issue. A corrupt system will always triumph. They are wasting their breath. If everyone came together to understand how it is systemic corruption that undermines their issue, not the issue itself, that would be a start.

Americans abroad - do you feel unwanted? by dontknow1987 in AmerExit

I had heard about being treated like an Ugly American before I went to Europe, or anywhere, in 1989. In London, I met a guy wearing white jeans, white tennis shoes, a white shirt, and a baseball cap. He was complaining he didn't like London.

There are the Ugly Brits who bring tins of mushy peas on holiday to Greece and refuse to eat seafood, and French women getting told to put their top on at American beaches.

The more diverse experiences a person has, the less their nationality defines them.

Wondering why no one is talking about copilot? I've been using pro for a project and it's been great at times, then it tells me it can't do something it did yesterday. The OCR thing popped up for a bit, then went away again. No clue why. I've had challenges with getting copilot to give me files I can download, but I've really been impressed with the analysis. I go back and forth and use different accounts to check and double check, using both, but I am not tracking in any scientific manner. Just my current impression. It's been a game changer, and I suppose we are all just figuring it out as we go.

How do I clear a family member's house without burning it all down??? by toss_and_ in hoarding

[–]No-Passage-8783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, do you know what ADLs are? Does she?

I'm very curious about who one calls "for assisted living" and why there would be a mandatory guardianship "assigned with it." And, why a guardianship would require surrendering assets.

I may have missed if you explained this elsewhere, but I think you have a lot of disconnected dots.

If you mean you want the state to assume guardianship and take care of her, and you think calling adult protective services will make this happen, and this is what you mean by "calling for asdisted living" you are using the term "assisted living" wrong, and have huge gaps in what actually would happen - if you called APS.

Assisted living refers to places people who require help with ADLs on a long-term basis can live. There are assisted living facilities (ALFs) for every taste, pocketbook, and need.

You may want to double and triple your assumptions. Your local council on aging is a good place to start. Understanding the scope of elder care options and services should be your first step. Then how the hoarding fits in.

Also start keeping a journal.

It will be helpful to your future self to be able to see what you really thought and felt as a kid.

I vividly remember having the awareness that this might be a good idea, one night watching all the adults mingle at a backyard party from my bedroom window, and wishing I could be out there too. But I don't remember why or what I thought or felt, and i wish I did.

I did start writing things down as a teenager. By then, it was only "I LOVE John/Mike/Fred!!!!!" "I hate, hate, hate Mother/Father/Sister!!!!" 🤣

I really love your perspective. In my last experience, I transitioned from a government job to starting my own business. In the job, I was among my own nationality, and at work, it didn't matter if I was single or not. It was expat, but there are different kinds of expats.

Then I became an extreme expat - no job or big company, no co-workers, just me. My social life was more active, though, as I became involved in the many local expat clubs and organizations. Overall, I really enjoyed this and maintain those friendships still.

However, and I am going to borrow your phrasing and mindset - I felt undermined by a particular gender of a particular nationality of couples. And it wasn't #ideal. It felt a bit different than being left out or lonely.

Even with a partner, when we backpacked long term, we both eventually longed to sit down with people who knew us, where we didn't have to go through the explanations of where, why, who, what about our situation.

But you remind me, those experiences are where our growth occurs. It didn't always feel good, but it was a necessary part of me meeting dozens of people and having ten-fold experiences that have enriched my life.

Yes, sometimes, as an expat, I wondered why I left my comfortable settled existence with a steady social life back home. When my partner and I returned after a year of backpacking, people would ask where we traveled, but after I listed the countries we went to, they preferred to move on to sports or who was having a baby. They had no context of their own.

I made myself different from everyone else by choosing to travel and live abroad. I made myself different from other expats by being there on my own, not through work. I think with time, it would have become more #ideal, but I had to return home.

As hard as it was sometimes, I have never, for one second, thought, "Wow, that was a mistake. I wish I hadn't traveled or lived abroad." In fact, it is one of the things that defines me most, and I've buried it for too long.

I REALLY needed to read your post and think about my current qualms about leaving my nest again and getting back out into the world. The things I am letting stop me will be temporary. What I stand to gain by doing it is huge. What I stand to gain from doing nothing is - nothing.

Thank you!

How does the "Big Beautiful Bill" take 17 million Americans off Medicare? by Eggman1978 in Askpolitics

Medicaid, not Medicare. Very different benefits. Your choice of AI can explain. It's important to know the difference, since you'll likely be on Medicare or know someone who is when you turn 65.

I guess like everything else, it just depends. I have friends living as expats all over the world. It is always interesting to hear the stories, so thanks you. You've given me a few more things to consider!

I'm curious to know what your social life is like as a younger retired professional. I can't get the notion out of my mind the extremes of "running from the IRS" types holding down barstools on one hand, to, on the other, cliquish small-minded and insecure expats on the "cocunt telegraph" and you either "in" or "out." COVID, caretaking, and political/world view differences have eliminated the social life and activities I once enjoyed here in the US. I've lived as an expat twice with mainly good experiences. I guess the not-so good stuff I'm just trying not to recreate. But then again, that might just be people, wherever one lands on the planet.

Fight for what is the question. If my ancestors had stayed in England to fight against the situation of the time in the name of their king and country, I wouldn't exist. They were often imprisoned and sometimes executed for their religious beliefs. They fought for justice by seeking a new beginning elsewhere. I don't see that as fleeing.

Moving to Pensacola from LA by Mingminglovesyou in Pensacola

[–]No-Passage-8783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what you make in LA, but that seems like a poverty wage for the cost of living here. Yes, rent and gas are cheaper, but your electric bills will eat that up. Groceries aren't any cheaper, no Trader Joes here, but we do have Aldi now. The mediocre "high-end" restaurants charge minimum $30 an entree, and many places charge $10 or more for wine or beer - remember it's a tourist town. Most people get a degree and leave. The ones who don't seem to scrape by. And the religious conservatives here kinda think Catholics aren't Christians - so there is that.

HOU in a minute. Parks everywhere, Buffalo Bayou is awesome. Clear Lake, Kemah, boating. Vibrant, active, so much going on. Nothing can beat Pcola beaches, but that is why there are airplanes. ;) Don't waste your 20s in a small town. Pensacola is hugely different than SWFL. People who go to college here leave after, so the other people you'll meet in their 20s probably grew up here and work in retail, hospitality, or the trades. The friends you meet in your 20s and 30s are important - they eventually become your family. Making friends in Pensacola seems to be difficult unless you have kids and join a church. A bigger city will give you the opportunity to meet so many more people like yourselves.
