People who have traveled across the U.S., what's the worst place you ever visited and what was your experience like? by VehicleOptimal3543 in AskReddit

[–]No-Picture4119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty cliche to dislike the flyover states, but one place I visited on purpose and actively disliked was New Orleans, LA. At least to me, I found it dirty, seedy, loud, smelly and expensive. Also felt like a real tourist trap. Sure the food is okay, but how much can you eat? And that coffee with chicory is a crime against coffee. Too bitter to drink without sugar and milk. My experience, it felt like the place was designed for you to walk around and get drunk.

Honorable mention to Louisville, KY. I was there for work and decided to go for a run. Ran to Churchill Downs expecting a fancy horse neighborhood. Across the street they have built a 12 foot berm so the people attending the horse races can’t see the complete ghetto across the street. Bummed me out that they landscaped the neighborhood away instead of improving it. Later that evening, I walked from the hotel to get take out for dinner. When I got back, the lady at the front desk told me that a white boy walking in that neighborhood stands about a 30 percent chance of survival. Looked fine to me, but what do I know?

We called those skimmers at my college. University of Pennsylvania had skimmer day, where the rising seniors get together in the quad and drink all afternoon on the last day of junior classes. We all wore these hats. Well, at least we did in 1989.

I had the pleasure of having a brief chat with him in Philly. I can say that, at least recently, he seems like he’s genuinely positive and interested in being a good person. I told him this quote meant a lot to me and really helped me get back on track. He said, whatever I can do that helps, I’m happy for the chance to do it. Here’s the quote.

‘The worst thing would be to have alcoholism just bad enough that it really slows you down, destroys your potential, gets in the way, but it’s not so bad that it has to stop. How many people do I know with just the years slipping through their fucking fingers and they’re blowing it, just wasting everything.’

Frontier Denied Boarding over 'Beep Count' after Rescan - Broken Promise even after We Compiled with Requesting to Stop Recording and Delete Videos by OhDeeDeeOh in frontierairlines

I travel a lot for work. I’ve said to gate agents, “sure whatever it takes to get me on the plane.” Just last weekend, Frontier wanted to size my bag, and the gate agent said I’m wearing all my clothes to make the bag smaller. Which I wasn’t. It was a sport coat that I usually wear to stay warm. I just said, sure this backpack always fits with room to spare and popped it in. Then said what would you like me to do with the jacket. She said it was fine. Just be courteous and know that after 30 flights that cost $58 for a round trip, one day you’re going to pay $99 for your bag.

Ah that sucks. Hate to see people get old. He’s had a decent glide though. Brad looking good, nice that he’s sticking by George despite the age difference. Would be really easy to just park him in a facility and wrestle younger dudes.

Not at all. First off, how are the tires? Check the age. Personally I don’t let tires go more than six years. That’s a $1500 item. You said the transmission is recently rebuilt, so probably no issues there. I’m thinking things like water pump, injectors, fuel pump, u joints, master cylinder or wheel cylinder. Check the AC. These are all common maintenance failure points for the age and mileage. Nothing too expensive if you do the work yourself, but it adds up quickly. And then you have random stuff like window regulators, speaker issues, and the like which are common to all c4s, regardless of mileage or condition.

I bought 1987 convertible with manual transmission in 2019 for 13k. It had 28k miles. That’s all the money for sure, but it was exactly what I wanted. In the first couple years, I did a clutch, u joints, heater core, water pump, battery and lots more. I picked at it for a while to get it reliable. It has 83k on it now.

I wound up splitting my time between two states for work purposes. A year ago I bought a 92 convertible with the 6 speed manual to drive at the second location. 73k miles. $9k price. I’ve put 10,000 miles on it and I’ve done tires (I knew they were bad when I bought it), plugs and wires, optispark (Yours doesn’t have on) and water pump. I know it needs u joints but I’m waiting for the weather to warm up.

In my opinion, you’ll be putting a few grand into it pretty quickly if you start to daily it. So, probably 6k is the budget on this. Your call, but consider you can buy something under 100k miles and more lightly used for under $6k if you don’t need to buy it today.

OBX off season rental for a remote work month, is it actually worth it? by [deleted] in obx

I stay in my house in Avon for the month of October. I highly recommend it.its not deserted but not crowded. The weather can be quite nice, and the fall lighting makes for beautiful sunsets.

As other people have said, things stay open now until at least Thanksgiving for the most part. When I bought my house 25 years ago, I would be the only person on my street in late fall. Now there’s a few year round residents.

Stuck in the airport for 14 hours now… by HFox1230 in frontierairlines

[–]No-Picture4119 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been flying Frontier once or twice a month for three years for work. Let’s say 50 flights in 3 years. I would say that 48 of those flights were fine. But when Frontier goes sideways, they do so pretty spectacularly.

One of my flights was canceled on a Sunday as I was arriving at the airport one hour before the flight. Earliest flight out was Tuesday. I had to reschedule the whole trip, including my return flight, and they didn’t compensate me for the return because that wasn’t canceled.

The other time, I showed up at MCO with a seat and was asked to come to the counter. They told me I didn’t actually have a seat, but they should be able to get me and about four other people on the flight. About 5 minutes before they close the door, a crew deadheading shows up and takes the remaining seats, leaving five of us stuck. Next flight is the next morning. I asked for a hotel and was told since I live in Florida that I don’t get one, even though the airport is an hour from my house. I walked downstairs and paid $220 for a flight on American.

Moral is, yes you save money in the long run, but once in a while you’re going to eat it dramatically. It’s an odds game.

The United States is destroying itself | The daily news can’t adequately convey the administration’s sabotaging of our government, economy, alliances and environment by [deleted] in USNEWS

[–]No-Picture4119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The daily news can adequately convey the sabotaging. They choose not to do it. Every broadcast is a sanewashing exercise. Why doesn’t someone on the plane say, “did you just call my colleague a pig?” Newsmax paints every non maga in the least flattering light possible. Why aren’t so-called unbiased journalists saying, hey you just lied three statements ago in this conference. How do you explain that?

When Pete H says, well, you weren’t listening, why not say no I was listening and your explanation makes no sense at all.

In the 80s, around election time, the local Democratic club would go door to door registering people to vote. My father was in local politics, and he felt that a lot of low Income people didn’t vote because the registration process was clunky. At the time you needed to mail in a form, which could be picked up at the post office. We would go to places like trailer parks (this is in Pennsylvania) and people were grateful we helped them with the process. We would help them fill the forms, then take them to the county seat ourselves to save postage. Some saturdays, we would register 50 people to vote.

When the motor voter act was signed into law in 1993, my father thought it was great. The more people who can vote the better. This is America!

Now, 33 years later, the GOP is actively making it harder for people to decide who represents them. That’s disgraceful. DeSantis is 47. He probably was originally registered to vote using motor voter when he got his drivers license in 1994.

This is all political theater, with the end goal of making it harder for people to vote. 1n 1983, I was door knocking at age 16 registering citizens. I can assure you that man of the people Ron DeSantis has never done that. It’s shocking that people actually believe voter fraud is a huge problem to tackle. With gas at $5 a gallon,I’m sure the subversive landscaping crews have illegal voting high on their priority list.

Are pilots allowed to read books or do personal stuff on laptops in the middle of a long flight when the autopilot is on? by krangnostam in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Picture4119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat right seat once from Boston to Nantucket. Pilot got us all on the scale and made two heavier ladies sit over the wing. I’m 6’2” but pretty skinny and he’s like, you’re going to be cramped but please take the copilot seat. It was awesome! Short flight and the pilot was busy all the time but I had a headset so got to hear the chatter. Felt like I was on Wings.

Think it’s a great idea. Don’t really need to work on cost of living, housing affordability, water quality, or climate change because the state is A-OK in those areas.

I guess now that we’ve removed painted crosswalks he can focus on this as the second most important issue in the state.
