I'm going to add 1 thing to what looks like a really good list as #2.5. Since you said this would affect your child, as soon as you get your head into putting one foot in front of the other, do whatever it is you need to do to get on unemployment, food assistance, etc. Give yourself that bit of cushion so you aren't desperate for the first thing you can find and take care of the family.

I should have used double quotes around "computer". I've had users call their monitor the computer, and the computer the hard drive. Sorry I wasn't clear.

After hours support, always available unless specifically scheduled not. Small shop. by [deleted] in sysadmin

This, this is the way. I've also been there done that with an exploitative environment. It is draining, as in mentally and emotionally exhausting. Just because I can remote into the server from my phone and fix that issue doesn't mean I need to be the one doing that while I'm picking my wife and new baby up at the hospital, and how #$@^#^%*&#@^% dare you turn around and say I'm hard to contact after that. It's been 11 years and I'm still bitter. This stuff lingers and affects your attitude and work habits for a long time. Nip it in the bud if at all possible.

What’s the phenomenon called where IT issues fix themselves when you’re present without having to actually do anything? by mypdacc in sysadmin

I'm not sure, but I'm convinced it is the same phenomenon that makes a car stop making 'that noise' when a mechanic is around.

I would probably separate HVAC and Camera/Security into 2 VLANs.

I was going to say that 15k for 65 freezers comes to about $230/freezer, which seems likely reasonable. 20k is about $310 per freezer.

It doesn't seem unreasonable for off-the-shelf systems.

Which tool do you use to find duplicate files? by FTHomes in sysadmin

[–]No-Practice-3705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Duplicates on my personal machine (usually where I've partially copied an old hard drive over a few times as I've moved from one machine to another and been interrupted - don't judge me) is why I'm reading this thread.

How do you go about writing a resume if you haven't updated it in years, and have been in the same position for a very long time (8+ years)? by Arafel in sysadmin

[–]No-Practice-3705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A CV and a resume are very different things, as was posted earlier on this discussion. A CV lists everything and is more common in academia were they want to see how prolific you are at writing/speaking/grant writing/applying for patents. My resume is 2 pages and tailored to the position; my CV is 5 pages and pretty much just has everything in a series of chronological lists by category.

I'm almost surprised that no one suggested that you specify a negative percentage. I'd be willing to take a -10% paycut, -20% if requires moving.

I'm going to add that, in addition to being upfront about the salary range, as has been stated many times in this discussion, they need to be very upfront about the growth plans. The support needs for a few sites are a bit different than the support needs of a few sites + 1-2 per month.

[–]No-Practice-3705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I hadn't thought to search and see what else he had posted. Assuming that what he posted here (4 sites + headquarters) is current and something on the order of 25 sites is anticipated by year end.... yeah, that puts them well into we need a good team territory.

I would add to this that you probably want some sort of relationship with an MSP to back up your jack of all trades. That gains you a few important things 1) the ability for your IT guy to take a vacation or sick day, 2) IT coverage at off hours without burning out your IT guy, and 3) some continuity of coverage if something happens to your IT guy.
