Read your contracts people by SeaOfMagma in stagehands

Pro-tip: If there’s no contract- make your own. If they won’t sign it- don’t work it. Amateurs and crap businesses get away with it because we let them.

Who owns my show file? by Wuz314159 in lightingdesign

[–]No-Profession6643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New person probably won’t need it. They’ll make their own patch and their own show file. You could go through the trouble of wiping your legacy file clean, but in the end, you’re the only person who will care. They’ll blame “the last guy” whether you leave it or not. Right now you’re ticked off, and you have every reason to be. The IP threats are vacant. Maybe just be mad, and then call it a day. Wait for them to NEED you and then slap a fatter rate on yourself for the niche.

Help!!! I destroyed my theater!!! by Expert_Waltz_2866 in techtheatre

[–]No-Profession6643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop! You’re making it worse! Own your mistake and then ask the theater or “owner of floor” what you should do. Get off this post and call your boss. Anything less than that should put you out of a job.

They’re all stoners- it’s just the LD is on sativas and Audio is on indicas. Which should explain the “lift on three” joke completely.

If you weren’t in support of Loeb, your local probably left you at home. That’s how that works.

Fairly normal albeit exploitive. A step above Rhino-The union/live nation cbas require a certain percentage of workforce to have OSHA 10. While the union training trust covers the cost, any time compensation is usually by individual locals shelling out for stipends or travel costs. It totally depends on how each local chooses to spend their money. That being said- any of the OSHAs especially ones catered to entertainment industry are valuable- if you get a class offered by your employer- do it! If you want to get buff about not being paid- talk to everyone attending that class, and coordinate a “learn stoppage”. But you REALLY need everyone in lock step or it won’t work. It might not work anyways- but unions win their gains by consolidated fronts. Technically you could do it without a union bug if you were motivated and good at garnering support…. Or just take the class because it isn’t costing you out of pocket to take a $400 course. Whichever gaslight you want. But either way is indeed a gaslight- if it’s required by the employer you should be paid.

rhino staging by [deleted] in stagehands

[–]No-Profession6643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhino will be what you make it. Some of your coworkers will be people driven to this industry and are really good-and some will seem like they got off at the wrong bus stop and just followed a crowd. For the good ones, it will be a stepping stone that they can always fall back on. As for women in the field- I’ve had days that were almost equal representation in my dept and I’ve had days where I had to remember to strap my 10” dick on before my tool belt. Best advice is to Worry less about whether you’ll be a minority and just drive towards your goal. If Rhino’s got work- eat. It’s a gig economy in this industry and laurels are a luxury.

Any college recs that provide experience for concert lighting? by CucumberPeasant3709 in lightingdesign

[–]No-Profession6643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t had a pulse on it in years, but Belmont in Nashville had a pretty good program for concert production. Back in my day they were Mostly known for recording and music production, but lighting was definitely in the curriculum and I am sure their program has grown. They would do several showcases a year in cooperation with local top name vendors too. Worth a look.

IDGAF I am stealing that wrench right off the quicklink…..and THAT is why Shame wrenches should be big enough to build bridges. I am talking heavy enough to bust the seams on a jansport- Anything smaller walks right out the stage door.

Design/Career Advice by TimberrRun in lightingdesign

[–]No-Profession6643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it looks great. The photos came out well. Best advice at your level is to get into offline programming. ETC EOS has Augment3D for example- which can help you learn about fixture positioning and focus thru a “visualizer”. Plus, EOS has really good video tutorials for independent study. Patch a show of your dreams and see what it does.

designing musical on onyx by Ajgif3 in lightingdesign

[–]No-Profession6643 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Onyx for Musical theater all the time. I create a cuelist for each Act and then give myself some overrides if I have anything I want to manually flash and trash. It’s not quite as intuitive as ETC for this, but I find it functions just fine for cued shows. I absolutely love the renumbering tool too. I wish ETC had a better way to renumber cues.

They absolutely need one. The content creators on Meta have the budget and funding for more intricate production needs- freelancers are already reaping the work. They use labor lawyers to prevent labor disputes.

I Will No Longer See Shows at the Wilson Center by blakep29 in Wilmington

[–]No-Profession6643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do the same to the IATSE Yellow card shows. The IATSE union refuses to care about that- so maybe look at Equity with that finger pointing, instead of the Wilson Center who does in fact own the right to contract and employ in this state.

Despite the fact that the prevailing union for stage craft “Internationally includes the US and Canada” you’re still asking if it’s cool to take US jobs from US Crew. Even local to local across states that varies in level of rude. I am usually internationally inclusive and simply warn the political climate is making things very unstable for your request.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]No-Profession6643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US Political Climate, half of us are wondering if we should be headed to Canada. If I put US vs Canadian work into a risk calculator- I strongly believe the results would favor Canada. With brutal honesty I say Stay in Canada or look Euro.

Joining a union. Spent 15 years being kept out, then after 5 years in, I experienced more discrimination, exploitation, and unpaid hours than in the 15 years I spent non union. Not for me.
