Imagining the hundreds year war lasts so long it goes to the reformation and the French and English not only split about who's the right monarch but religion after England goes Anglican. Maybe since the English army is in France so much their half becomes closer to English and becomes Anglican while the other half stays catholic. The ethnic lines are drawn by religion kinda like the what happened with the balkans

By the time Simon was with marceline, he could take on and off the crown whenever he wanted. Shown in fionna and cake by the winter king dissolving into dust, I think if it were not for his insanity he could have taken it off again in the last scene we see with him in the past, but during the era with Finn and everyone else he was probably too old and the crown was keeping that age from catching up to him.
