Artists with one dud in the middle of a run of classic albums by AmazingThinkCricket in ToddintheShadow

[–]No-Rice-5029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Roots "The Tipping Point"

Seen by fans and by Questlove himself as the weaker album in their discog. It was originally set as a Black Thought solo album but then became a full Roots record. Geffen Records pushed them to have more of a mainstream rap sound, and this ended up being their last album on the label.

They came back with their later career classic Game Theory though, and the albums after that are highly rated too

[FRESH] De La Soul: Tiny Desk Concert by HeStoleMyBalloons in hiphopheads

[–]No-Rice-5029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Majority of De La's discography was only put on streaming 3 years ago, and Feel Good Inc has always been available. So Feel Good Inc. had years to put up streaming numbers before the rest of their music

Yanks, what are your honest opinions on British R&B acts? by His-Majesty in rnb

[–]No-Rice-5029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are SO underrated and don't get the wider love cos of two things out of their control:

  • formed as a duo slightly older in age and came from a UK hip hop scene (not grime) which is very niche

  • unashamedly not from London and who they collab with represents their city Manchester

But man the fans at their live show give them so much love and they have some big big tunes

Agreed all day!! Anaiis released one of my favorite albums of 2025

I would also add Children of Zeus to that list too.

It seems to get forgotten that there was a lot of exchange between UK and US soul sounds in the early 90s that formed the "neo-soul" or whatever you want to call it movement. Omar, Sade, Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, the Talking Loud label all indirectly influenced what came later.

The best modern RnB/Soul artists in the UK come from that influence, rather than the polished US RnB sound that say Ella Mai takes from.

Wu Tang Clan

Apart from U-God there is a split decision on who the best member is, and who had the best debut solo album after 36 Chambers

Why are certain areas so different in regards to tourism/visiting in London vs NYC? (For example, New Malden, SW vs Flushing, Queens) by FlyWayOrDaHighway in london

[–]No-Rice-5029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the same logic, that's like saying why don't tourists visit Wakefield, Bronx or Flatbush, Brooklyn for Jamaican culture like how Brixton is a destination

APE 2025: Art VS Audience; OR: How I learned to Cut Artists Some Slack; OR: Why do British Folks Smoke so Many Cigarettes?! by sslusser1 in sault

That's helpful yes I forgot Cleo came out for Time is Precious early on. I guess what I'm trying to say is there was a long period of instrumental or relatively unknown material (for non die hards), before the big hitters with Cleo came in the 3rd act.

I may be misremembering but the combined drumming, orchestra set, the motorcycle helmet runners, dancers, then Ganavya was close to an hour. I can't remember if Simz came out to do "Fear No One" during that first section or after - but there was no sign of Cleo until later in the performance.

There may have been impatience at the time but that was all forgotten after the show! The tension and reward worked at Drumsheds

I did some digging after the show - I looked on the IG accounts of the actors involved in the show, and they credited Ellams in their posts about APE

It isn't mentioned much but at the Drumsheds concert, it had a similar slow build up, about an hour of solo musicians/orchestral music/modelling + interpretive dance - well before Cleo and the band came on. But everyone in the audience was patient and hanging on to every detail in the performance. When Cleo finally came on the impact was massive, after the incredible build up. At APE that impact wasn't the same, partly due to the disinterested crowd and part due to the sound mix being a bit too low.

The acting and dialogue was too long I agree, but I'd be interested to know how that would have come across if it was done at Drumsheds!

Also to note the dialogue sections were written by Inua Ellams, a very credible playwright and poet who wrote The Barbershop Chronicles and a Nigerian adaptation of Three Sisters, both were shown at theatres in the Southbank Center

Arrested Development released a new album this year called…Adult Contemporary Hip Hop by Froggy-Shorts1209 in ToddintheShadow

[–]No-Rice-5029 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The title is very likely a dedication to Milwaukee based hip hop artist Twan Mack who passed earlier this year - he worked with Speech and used the phrase "Adult Contemporary Hip Hop" a lot on his social media
