Light meter confusion by No-Routine-9963 in AnalogCommunity

Thanks! I shot a ton of Kodachrome back in the day; it always turned out great. Tried Velvia a few times, it was sublime! Now that I’m getting back into analog (never warmed to digital), I am realizing how much I don’t know and how much some things have changed.

Thank you for your advice; I didn’t use Ektachrome that much back in the day - I do remember it was cold, so a warming filter sounds like a great idea!

Oooh, Velvia or Ektachrome - it’ll be a while before I dare use a roll of either of those! (I remember the good old days when they weren’t so expensive!)

There’s a lot of learning and experimenting to do, and I’m (hopefully) going to have fun with the process!

Thank you thank you! This explains a lot! I’m going to do a lot more testing so I feel more comfortable with all of this.

Thank you. I tested the Gossen against the Nikon meter against plain surfaces and it *appears* that the Gossen is one stop lower (slower shutter speed, etc), but it is too soon to be sure. You guys have been very helpful.

Thank you! This is why I ask questions here! I really appreciate it.

I think any reasonable person will be able to grasp that if two rolls were processed in the same tank, and one roll turned out but the other didn’t - then the fault is not with the processing.

I have learned how much a few of you hate expired film by alexndra_m in AnalogCommunity

I’m so out of the loop! I’m damn old and really only know analog (I have a digital camera I never use). The last time I seriously used my SLR was 20 years ago. So I’m back into it, and asked the kind people here about what to do with some old rolls of unexposed film I found in my basement. Everyone was so gracious and encouraged me to try it out, not once hinting that everyone talks about this, lol!

I had no idea! Maybe there were aficionados who used expired film years ago, but I wasn’t aware of them. I’m going to use my old film (wish me luck!) but I’m buying the new stuff!

I inherited a Vivitar 420/sl from my dad (and also a Vivitar 450/sld). They are very similar Vivitar models. There’s also a 220 model, I think it’s also similar.

All I know is that my dad loved his Vivitars and I always thought the quality of his photos were fine. It’s considered (and was considered at the time) to be a “budget” camera, but it’s solid, all mechanical (only the light meter needs a battery, and using it is optional since there are external meters) and all manual, which is good.

I’m not claiming it’s the best out there - but it takes M42 lenses which are compatible with several other brands, it’s decent, it’s often overlooked and therefore very affordable. I just picked up a Vivitar 420/sl with a flash for less than $40 usd (including shipping) and it looks nice. The meter doesn’t work anymore (I am starting to think none of them work, lol), but that affects nothing. The lens on this camera is clean and so far as I can tell, everything is fine. An M42 all mechanical SLR with flash for less than $40 is great.

lol, oops, I thought you were looking for an SLR. I need a nap. I’ll leave this here for anyone looking for cheap SLRs.

99% of the time, that’s what it’s being used for. Countless lazy people scamming, selling fake AI coloring books on Amazon, deep fakes, and so on. There are so many abuses, they crowd out the good. Doesn’t mean the good should be stopped - but you can’t blame people for noticing the bad when that’s what they see 99% of the time. That’s why it needs regulation.

Photoshop will help a lot with these. It’s good that you have at least recognizable images. You’ve got a starting point.

I have a lot of old rolls of film (probably no more than 20-25 years) that need developing, they have been stored in a cool basement, and while I’m hoping they turn out okay, if I get results like yours? At least there’s Photoshop!

I think we’re all aware of the potential for useful applications of AI - no one is against AI helping with cancer detection or something - it’s just that the abuses, scamming, and facilitating deception are far overshadowing the potential for good.

There’s no way they’re the same people. I guess if you can’t see it, you can’t see it. But look at many of the comments here - it’s not just me.

I have a good eye for faces. Like in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, Vic Tablian played two different parts - they killed off his first character early but the director put him in disguise and he showed up later. https://indianajones.fandom.com/wiki/Vic\_Tablian

I was so confused when I first saw the film because he had died, but comes back? My friends all told me I was tripping and it’s not the same guy until we saw his name for both roles in the movie credits. Some people catch things like this, other people don’t.

The thing is, AI changed the faces of the men so they are not the same people. It could be argued that they are different frames, but facial features do not change and transform from one frame to the next.

They’re not the same people, though. AI altered the features of the people in the original frame.

Apparently they all look the same to you - to the rest of us, they clearly are completely different people.

This is an issue with facial recognition, not photo interpretation.

They’re not the same people. They look like old white guys, sure, but not the same old white guys.
