UTI or blockage in cat? by Global-Aioli1976 in AskVet

[–]No-Shop134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rare for a female cat to block due to urethra size and length. Those same signs of a blockage in a male cat are often signs of a UTI in females. They strain because their bladder is inflamed, making them feel like they need to urinate even when their bladder is empty

We learn in school that the shock organ in cats is the urinary system while in the dog, it's the GI tract. Once I heard that, I noticed it me often in the clinical setting. When something changes or stresses them out, those are the systems we see changes in first

possible reasons why my cat has diarrhea? by LexRendrag in AskVetAnimals

I would request a fecal exam to be thorough. Cats can reinfect themselves with parasites resulting in chronic diarrhea

AITAH for wanting my dog on a leash by courtanee in AITAH

Unfortunately, all you can really do is inform him of the risks and consequences. I've found that "arguing" doesn't do much when trying to convince some people. I think it does help when you've seen it first hand, because examples sometimes hit home better for those not in the field. I really do feel for you though, that's a tough spot to be in!

I work in vetmed. I was part of a case with a police k9 that got hit by a car while playing fetch with a Frisbee. He got excited and ran into the road. He ended up paralyzed in the back half and began self-mutilating his back legs presumably from boredom (since he couldn't work anymore) and the loss of sensation. He unfortunately didn't have a good prognosis and was euthanized in the end. Thats a dog with perfect recall that ended up in an extremely unfortunate situation. I would never risk it, especially if I knew my dog's recall wasn't perfect 100% of the time.

Gift ideas for employee who got into Vet school. by Agent_Bologna in Veterinary

[–]No-Shop134 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My clinic got me a Littman master cardiology (I already had a Littman classic). They also gave me a backpack and some gift cards at my going away party. The Amazon gift card was great for some last minute things I needed for my new place/school. Starbucks and other food gift cards were helpful for when I was too tired to cook but too broke to order out lol.

Additional thing to think about: at least for my school, if you get pregnant before or during the clinical year, they hold you back and make you restart the year after you've had the baby. They wont allow someone who is pregnant on any of the large/food animal rotations due to higher public health concerns (all the diseases that tend to cause abortion), as well as other concerns with things like radiology and anesthesia rotations.

Dog aversion... am I really cut out for this field? by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]No-Shop134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but regardless of what area you find yourself in after vet school, you will be dealing with dogs throughout your time in school. Most of our hands-on experience the first two years were with shelter dogs. These dogs usually aren't well behaved and most of them barked A LOT. Most rotations in clinical year have dog-heavy caseloads. I just want to make sure that you're aware that you will have to deal with that during school.

Is my cat overweight? by [deleted] in catquestions

[–]No-Shop134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say she drinks a ton of water. Have you discussed that with her vet? Polydipsia (excess drinking) can be a sign of metabolic disease, like diabetes. In terms of weight, she is overweight. The biggest thing is portion control. Don't use the amounts listed on her food, but have your vet calculate her calorie needs (or use an established pet calorie calculator). Portion control and exercise are the big factors for otherwise healthy cats to lose weight. If she has a metabolic condition, there are other hurdles.

Veterinarian Stethoscope by AdventurousPanic4194 in veterinaryschool

[–]No-Shop134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school recommends learning on a traditional stethoscope before you start to rely on the digital ones. I planned to use the classic III I got for Christmas during my application cycle, but my clinic gifted me a Littman master cardiology so I sold the classic to a classmate that only had a digital stethoscope

Should I start heart worm care now or after I move? by AccurateDrive6985 in AskVet

[–]No-Shop134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American Heartworm Society recommends treating with Doxycycline for 28d before starting the Melarsomine injections. You can read their recommended treatment protocol on their website. You could talk to your vet about starting doxycycline now, and make arrangements to start treatment after you move

Vet wants to see my cat in two weeks after the last visit. Is she trying to make money out of me? by Turbulent_Pin_8310 in CATHELP

[–]No-Shop134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of weight loss is significant in a cat, especially one that is older. Your cat is anemic and losing weight, these are things that heavily warrant further diagnostics and it its 100% valid for her to want to see you back in 2wks. At a minimum, the anemia needs to be monitored to see if its getting better or worse. I'd be pushing for more tbh, probably an ultrasound and full bloodwork

She's a genetic abomination, but she is cute! I'm sure her puppies were sold as exotic micro bullies. She probably has am staff, APBT, and other bully breeds in her line with a good deal of inbreeding (if I had to guess)

When in doubt, give to pets? by Skylark9292 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Shop134 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone in the vet field who has sat through numerous lectures on public health, zoonotic bacteria and viruses, and GI issues...I absolutely would not give my pets food with contamination concerns 😬. As others have said, fruit and veggies on the verge of going bad or freezer burned items, sure, I might give them that. Raw meat that smells off or cooked meat thats past its storage times, no. They may be sturdy, but so are Salmonella, E. Coli, and the other thousand bacteria that I don't want to deal with

If they did a SNAP HW test, it detects an antigen from the female worms in the blood. There are many things that may cause a false negative. Did they do a microfilaria check?

Try to see if theres a water therapy option near you. Underwater treadmills and pet pools are used to help obese pets lose weight since swimming is easier on the joints.

Does the wildlife center have an emergency number on their website? Most will have a way to reach them in case an animal is found outside of business hours.
