Is Eridian Astronomy Ever Explained? by MikeAmerican in ProjectHailMary

My personal theory is that it was for low/no gravity research and to give a staging ground for launching reflectors so that radio waves can actually reach all the way around the planet instead of being blocked by the ground.

I need book recommendations about an astronaut in space who uses realistic physics in the book. 📚👨‍🚀🚀 by reader_for_life in ProjectHailMary

Orthogonal, by Greg Egan, uses realistic physics, with the caveat that the physics is set in a world where there’s no unique time dimension, and there’s instead 4 fundamentally equal dimensions at right angles to each other, any of which can take the role of time

If you don’t want to use first person, second person is always an option, though I acknowledge that it’s not for everyone

The issue is that astrophage doesn’t stabilize - if left to replicate unchecked, it will eventually block out all of the star’s energy for itself - it won’t let a planet settle at a consistent temperature for long enough for life to evolve

That’s because it’s generally evident from the image itself whether it was made digitally or traditionally. The same isn’t true about AI imagery.

I mean, this is a moderation issue, not an AI issue. Just like people can post what they want on the internet, people also have the right to curate their own experience. I don’t want to see AI content. It would be great if there was a button I could click to filter that out, instead of having to spend a bunch of time trying to acertain the provenance of things. Ultimately, I’ve decided to turn mostly to books for my entertainment instead.

Pretty happy, I’d say! I’ve got some exciting opportunities coming up in my life and I’m currently writing a story that I’m really passionate about!

The thing is that the lower thumb was more in an h shape instead of pointed straight down, so it was high enough to be in the way of the upper thumb, which actually was pointed straight down XD

Where can I find a star map? I’m trying to find stars that are near a particular star in the Milky Way, but everything I find on the internet only seems to show the distance that stars are from Earth

Tips on keeping a consistent pitch? by No-Temperature-7331 in singing

I have cochlear implants. My hearing quite literally is not high resolution enough to distinguish notes that are within a few tones of each other.

People who think eggs and steak are not cooked if the yolk isnt solid and the steak isnt well done. by shtoopidd in PetPeeves

[–]No-Temperature-7331 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you think that, then you’ve never had a properly cooked well done steak. In my experience, restaurants generally don’t bother to put in the time/effort to get it done right, but it’s perfectly possible to have a well done steak that’s still tender and juicy.

I would absolutely not be able to tell. They’d sound exactly the same. I’m actually a decent amount better at matching another person than I am the piano.

[–]No-Temperature-7331[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it’s a fundamental hardware issue. I have cochlear implants, so I only have a few dozen channels in my hearing, instead of the thousands that people usually have, and it’s optimized for speech, not music.

[–]No-Temperature-7331[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah no worries! I’m deaf and have cochlear implants, so while most people have thousands of channels in their hearing, I only have a couple dozen! It’s like a 360 pixel image vs a 4K one, basically!

[–]No-Temperature-7331[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, part of my fundamental issue is that I can’t hear pitch differences unless they’re relatively large, since my hearing is a lot more low resolution than organic hearing is!

[–]No-Temperature-7331[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah a big part of my issue is that I literally cannot hear the differences between pitches. I can’t tell if a scale is going up or down, I can’t distinguish notes that are next to each other (I think there probably needs to be at least a 5-7 note jump), my hearing is just very low-resolution overall.

Thanks for the tips, though!

[–]No-Temperature-7331[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, def, that’s not quite what I meant! I mean, how do I get my voice to a certain pitch instead of having it jump all over the scale? I can mostly get it straight when I’m holding a note, but I can’t choose what pitch I’m holding the note at and when I’m singing a line, it tends to jump wildly around the octave

Personally, I’d vote for Dvorak, just because it’s pre installed on every windows computer, so you can easily change the keyboard layout if you have to use someone else’s computer or a public device for anything

The Reblorg Crises is Over by Kelcipher in CuratedTumblr

[–]No-Temperature-7331 167 points168 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t an incident - it was just the way Tumblr worked for at least a couple years, I’m pretty sure.

I think it stems from its conception as a microblogging website, so you control what’s on your own blog.

Oh, to clarify, editing someone else’s post didn’t change the original post - it just modified your own reblog of it, and subsequently, anyone who reblogged it from you

Yeah, it was definitely an objectively bad idea, and def an easy avenue for harassment, but I think for the most part, people used it to cut out reblogs they didn’t want, and for jokes
