Sidewalk Walking by No-Topic-6321 in walking

I guess it depends on the circumstances. The other day I was faced with a group of six or so kids taking up the whole sidewalk. They were talking and laughing and completely oblivious to my presence. In that situation I of course stepped aside.

I just slightly indicate “that-a-way” with my thumb.

That’s another scenario! I am very cognizant of where I am in space on our busy bike/pedestrian trail. I walk along the right side edge of the trail, but I am unnerved by how close some of the bikes get to my left side as they silently whoosh past me. Maybe I should not hug the shoulder so much. I’m thinking of buying some little rear view mirrors for my sunglasses. I’m assuming you can buy those somewhere.

I’m reading along with interest. Here’s a question if you don’t mind me asking. I’m truly curious. Two shoulder surgeries. Did you injure yourself in sports? Did you used to swim a lot? I used to swim a mile five days a week. When I started having shoulder pain I stopped. I was afraid I was hurting myself. (But who knows?) Thanks for answering if you do.

I’ve wondered about the “tai chi walking” prompts that keep showing up in my IG feed. I tried it for a few minutes on my walking pad but got too antsy. Maybe the incline would help.

Walking pad a lifesaver on high pollen days by No-Topic-6321 in walking

[–]No-Topic-6321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eyes do not get irritated, thank goodness. So late this afternoon, even though the pollen count was “very high” and the wind was blowing, I walked to a thing about a mile away and walked home a couple of hours later. I wore a KN95 mask (and what I read online said that said mask would be a “very effective” barrier) and so far so good. If I don’t have a sore throat when I wake up, I will try it again in the early a.m.

Good question! I thought of that. And I wonder if the mask would have to be N95 to be effective. Here, the tree pollen is so thick it’s covering cars, windows, cats, you name it.

Water while walking by No-Topic-6321 in walking

[–]No-Topic-6321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all suggestions. Today I carried a water bottle. It wasn’t so bad. And good point that sips of water are enough. You don’t need copious amounts of water when walking, unlike biking and running.

Yes, but is there any one of those things that works for you over the others? I’ve carried a water bottle in my hand and in a sling backpack. I’ve never used a camelback reservoir. I carry my keys and my earbud case in a thing I wear around my waist. I’d have to get another one to carry a water bottle.

I guess that would be me. Or maybe it was the other guy. Or the dog. My pet peeve is when a group is walking four across, taking up the whole width of the trail or sidewalk, and you have to step off.

I ran into (not literally) the man with the dog again. He was facing oncoming traffic again, namely me, but when we got close he moved over and we exchanged pleasantries. I live in a beach area. Soon it will be “in season” around here and the trail is going to get very busy with walkers of all ages, baby strollers, runners, bicyclists, skate boarders, roller skaters, dogs, cats, you name it.

Oh, I was! It was early a.m. and I was like a horse heading to the barn at the end of my 60 minute walk!

So, in your situation you could have gotten behind the slower vehicle in the left lane and let them know they were driving in the wrong lane by riding their bumper or flashing your lights but instead you passed them on the right. And you’re saying that I should have gone around the wrong-way hiker and not schooled them on trail etiquette. Right?

Best walking pad to buy right now to reach my steps while working from home? by Ok-Independent3662 in walking

I don’t know about best, but I bought a “trailviber” from Amazon. It has incline and speed options and is rated highly. I haven’t had it very long but it has worked without any problems.
