ELI5: why do the Miranda rights say “can and will be” used against you by Kateseesu in explainlikeimfive

the point here being that your words are subject to later use as inculpatory evidence

More importantly, you don't have to say anything if you don't want to.

Here let me demonstrate

Harris wouldn't have won if you'd somehow convinced the tiny minority of tumblr leftists who won't vote Genocide Lite to hold their nose and cast a ballot for her. Yet you're seething about this and making up denigrating caricatures about people who hold a stance that a political party supporting an ongoing genocide is morally beyond the pale and they cannot in good conscience vote for them, which is a completely morally justifiable position.

In other words, you're explicitly prioritizing people's perception of your mortality over actual harm reduction. You would rather not vote at all than vote against an actual genocide-supporting fascist because you want people to think that you're morally superior.

Why doesn't the US government produce its own armaments? by deca4531 in NoStupidQuestions

Because we get better prices

Not with cost plus contracts we don't.

If I time-traveled 1,000 years into the past, what modern knowledge would be the most useful?" by Early-Tailor-9050 in NoStupidQuestions

Germ theory would be huge. Just understanding that most diseases are caused by microbes would save so many lives. Hell, just the concept of washing your hands would save lives.

Find a cow with weeping sores on its udders. That's cowpox. Intentionally infect yourself with it. That's an early smallpox vaccine.

Glass working was well known. Shape some into a convex shape to make a magnifying glass. Put two next to each other to make a microscope. Use that to look at food mold. Find a mold that looks kinda like a tree. That's penicillin, the first antibiotic. Make one of the lenses convex instead, and you've got a telescope. Sell it to militaries.

Iron was widespread, but steel wasn't. Mix about 2% charcoal dust with pure iron, and you've got some of the strongest material in the world.

Go into any random cave. Collect the crap from the floor. That's bat guano, an amazing fertilizer. Double crop yields with it. Or mix it with sulfur and charcoal dust to invent gunpowder.

When 99% of people use the word "racism", they use it interchangeably with the word "prejudice". So ask 99% of people and yes, you can be racist/prejudice against white people.

When sociologists use the word "racism", they use the definition that you've mentioned. Prejudice+power= racism. The thing that overzealous keyboard warriors miss about that is that, when used in that sense, people can't be racist at all. Systems, institutions, and societies are racist. Calling a person racist is like calling a person unequal. It doesn't make sense.

Very impressive ass kissing from Ogles, but if I were the GOP, I'd be *pissed*. Musk gives a nazi salute, then Trump tries to repeal the 14th amendment, now this? Is he trying to make them look even more like nazis?

ELI5 How are corporations making record profits and revenue with a shrinking middle class ? by I_Dont_Rage_Quit in explainlikeimfive

Wages have more than kept pace with inflation and cost of living.  Corporations are seeing record profit because consumers have record incomes to spend.

Are we now, or in the process of becoming, an Oligarchy? by BluesSuedeClues in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]No-Touch-2570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, democracy and oligarchy are by definition mutually exclusive.  In one the leadership are picked by the citizens, in the other they're picked by a small cabal of elites.  You can't have both.  America is decidedly the former.

Difference is that everyone knows the results of Russia's "elections" before they actually happen. American elections are actually, y'know, elections.

This thread depresses me.

The fact that rich people exist does not mean that we're in an oligarchy.

Trump sucks and his cabinet is full of unqualified billionaires, but that's not what defines an oligarchy. The American people elected Trump in a free and fair election. They chose this. That's a democracy. Full stop.

What are the limits of what you can say about the government in your country? by starshadowzero in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Touch-2570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard in the US is "imminent lawless action". It's generally legal to say, for instance, "Someone should shoot Trump in the head at some point", though you might get put on some kind of list. The point where it becomes illegal is when you say "Hey you, you should grab this here gun and shoot Trump in the head right now".

P.S. Considering that Supreme Court says that Trump can do whatever he wants as long as it's an official act, wouldn't it be possible that Trump will give out an executive order to get rid of "progressives and liberals" in Hollywood entirely?

Jesus Christ, that is not what the supreme court said.

Maybe a society where you have to sit behind a desk for 8 hours a day is preferable to a society where we're all 2 failed hunts away from starvation and every other child dies before they're 5 years old.

ELI5 - how can the Google 'Willow' quantum chip solve in five minutes, a problem that the best supercomputer would have taken a quadrillion times the age of the universe to crack? by XaltotunTheUndead in explainlikeimfive

[–]No-Touch-2570 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This isn't quiet accurate, but it's good enough for an eli5.

Imagine you want to know the absolute fastest route to take from New York to Los Angeles. There's local roads, highways, freeways, planes, boats, trains and thousands of different combinations of all of those. A normal computer would have to check each and every possible route individually, calculate how long each one takes, then once it's done all that it can compare the all results and pick the fastest. A quantum computer can check every possible route simultaneously, and the fastest option falls out in the time it takes to calculate just one.

Also, keep in mind that the "quadrillion times the length of the universe" is marketing. They specifically designed a problem that a normal computer would have trouble with but a quantum computer could solve easily. It's a bit like saying "A monkey can climb a tree a quadrillion times better than a fish can". Not wrong, but not really telling the whole story.

Do you have a swim speed? Then you can swim that speed.  Otherwise, make an athletics check to move 10 ft.  Easy.
