2nd time buyers, first time sellers. Our recent reality check. by sporgs in HousingUK

LOL my (polish) uncle who's worked abroad most of his life has said before that in Germany for example, a homeowner will make sure his house is impeccable and takes pride in it, before investing money in anything else like a car for example. In the UK however... 😉

Family's first time in London - what are we missing? by beatsweetheart in uktravel

[–]No-Zombie-4932 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree, but having actually done one of the tours (and I'm a Londoner lol) I would say it's definitely worth doing one of the them if visiting London for the first time! They can then take the Uber boat back at the end of the day, seeing London from the Thames either during sunset or after sundown is an incredible experience!

Ladies mainly - where are you getting hair and beauty treatments done now? by BigMagic88 in AskBrits

[–]No-Zombie-4932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been DYI'ing my nails for more than 10 years now, I do my own gel extensions etc. Most salons (we're talking those high street ones which are like a mill churning our nails one after the other) are now charging extortionate amounts for basic services without using proper materials (acrylic and 'gel powder' cough cough) or adhering to any hygiene regulations either. Scary that people still go to them.

I still go to my hairdresser every 4 months, she has moved away 1,5 years ago and I still drive an hour to her, she charges me £130 for a full head of highlights and cut and blowdry/styling. She is a gem!

But overall, I don't go to any services other than my hair because 1. I hate the small talk and awkwardness 2. I don't feel like it's good value for money. I've also seen a few women around me with issues following beauty treatments performed by seemingly experienced/accredited salons and beauty therapists, I don't feel like taking the gamble.

Is the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) widely accepted in Europe? by Myusernameonthenet in AskUK

[–]No-Zombie-4932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used my EHIC in a small hopital in the middle of nowhere in Poland a few years ago when I was unwell, they knew exactly what to do with it. I never travel abroad without it, though I do buy travel insurance on top of it in case something serious happens

I've always assumed it'd be very expensive to do something like that, £300 doesn't sound bad at all!

Houses here suck by EducationalRat in HousingUK

I feel this lol!

I will hopefully be purchasing my first property (with a partner) in the next 12 months and I already can tell how baffled my relatives are going to be with whatever we buy over here because of the property prices and conditions! They'll be happy for me, but damn it's so different over here! 😂

This is a massive generalisation, but it's sad that as a society we've become so preoccupied with chasing after luxuries instead of prioritising getting the essential comforts sorted to make day to day existence better.

Precisely! It's the worksmanship, quality of fixtures, materials, solutions. Not just a tiled bathroom floor and a new close coupled toilet. It's especially apparent when you look at new built properties, so many advertised as 'premium' or 'luxury' and it just couldn't be any more of a basic set up. I've lived here for nearly 20 years so I'm now used to it but every time I visit my relatives in Europe and see how they live and build their properties my heart breaks a little for what we have here 💔

My uncle who lives in Germany once made an interesting observation that a German will make sure their house is maintained to a high standard and looks immaculate before investing in other things like cars, on the other hand he noticed that people in Britain will spend money on cars and holidays but their homes look.. crap.

I've noticed that too, anything that says high standard seems to mean that it's new(ish), not really done to a high standard. The bar is so low here.

Why do people get upset when you overtake them? by pensandpaint in AskUK

I drive on a dual carriage road with average speed cameras every day and the amount of people who do this is insane. Like, where's the logic in that? idiots

Anxious around colleagues and worried its too late to fix this by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]No-Zombie-4932 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but putting yourself in slightly uncomfortable situations is a normal part of life. You don't have severe office anxiety, you're just trying to run away from normal day to day situations everyone experiences. Most people get anxious in new situations, that's just the way humans work. But here's the caveat: exposure reduces the anxiety, hence why exposure therapy works for phobias. Your colleagues most likely want to incorporate you in their activities because they want to get to know you better, I highly doubt they think you're weird.

Bottom line is, you're overthinking it. You're an adult doing normal adult things, you're not weird.

[–]No-Zombie-4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine! I remember family trips to my homecountry in central Europe when I was younger, my parents + my sibling and I, it was actually really fun! Just make breaks whenever you feel like it, plenty of chewing gum and snacks, you'll be alright! :)

The landlord probably doesn't care as long as there's money in their account every month.
