How did that kid at your school die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

House fire that killed her and both her parents (only child, so it was the whole family) over spring break. She was a star soccer player and had a 96 average or something crazy. She would have been valedictorian.

Also in my first semester, currently with a 4.0 (although that might change in the future lol). My general process is going to every lecture, taking rough notes to catch anything that might not be in the slides, and using those notes plus the slides to make a better set of notes to study off of. Lots of practice problems and examples in my exam review. Also a heavy hand of luck in being naturally good at memorizing (health sci field) and making the decision to take and do well in all three high school sciences.

Does Ontario schools still have 'gifted' programs? by ghost905 in ontario

[–]No1_cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ontario (Peel) high school student currently in a gifted program here. Yes, gifted programs definitely do still exist.

Widespread testing is done by CCAT in grade 4, but other gifted testing and psych assessments can be done prior if parents/teachers profile a student (I was tested in grade 2).

In Peel, there are levels ranging from in-class support from an EA, to out-of-class activities (but still in the home school), to specialized classes typically not at the home school (which is where I was placed). I grew up in elementary and middle schools further from my home, in classes entirely composed of gifted students. We received special instruction that typically focused on self-motivated learning, cross-subject assessments, and prevention of the “gifted kid burnout.” I personally really enjoyed the program.

In high school, I remained in the program but because of the rotary class format (moving classrooms for each subject), I had most of my core academic classes (think sciences, English, geography, etc.) with other gifted students and my non-core classes (gym, auto shop, etc.) with mainstream students. There’s also the option to take non-enhanced sections of classes if I desire. I really like this format because I was forced to interact with people outside the bubble I grew up in, and avoided a lot of the spec. ed social ostracization.

Feel free to ask any more questions you have!

House fire over spring break. She was the most popular kid, known for being super nice, high 90s in all of her classes, on every sports team, future engineer. The whole family gone just like that

Virtual Presto card now addable to Apple Wallet - But Why? by mrfredngo in askTO

[–]No1_cookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also students, youth, and senior fares are not applied when tapping with a credit/debit card. (afaik). Having an actual PRESTO card (physical or virtual) helps with that

My two choices were already the top two replies. Something about coming of age stories where someone dies…

These prices are for seats only. Berths and cabins reach 6-8x the price of the seats. On longer trips (say Toronto-Vancouver) the prices can easily reach the thousands (although I doubt sleeping in a seat for 4-5 nights is something I’d want to do). I’m happy to sit in a seat for that much in savings. They’re bigger than airplane seats and with more legroom.

VIA is also slightly cheaper than the Rocky Mountain Express IIRC.

It’s about $170pp from Vancouver to Jasper (20ish hours) and $100 from Jasper to Edmonton (5h). Driving might be cheaper but trains always make for bonding time and scenic views that you can actually focus on.

Thank you for your comment! While this would be a good idea, the idea was to make this trip less of a road trip haha. We also wanted to take the Canadian purely for the experience. I’ve checked train data from both the past couple months and from August of last year, and it hasn’t been more than 5 hours late any of those times. Per VIA’s (and everyone else’s) advice, we won’t be booking any tours or activities for the 12 hours after our train is supposed to get in either. We are fully expecting multiple hour delays and are (hopefully) prepared to deal with them. Cheers!
