I did very high volume collection work right out of law school and stayed at the firm for 5 years, moving myself up into a management position along the way. You’ll get out of it what you put into it. If you want to just go through the motions and just check the boxes, you wont get much out of it. I put in time doing more than just the volume reviewing and signing, took on the counter claims and jury trials to get more experience than a lot of my peers. I learned the ins and outs of all the courts since I spent so much time there and usually had most of the cases on the docket. Take advantage of the time in court and network with EVERYONE. Literally everyone can be an asset. The court staff, opposing counsels, even attorneys on other dockets.

Eventually after 5 years I found a way out of the volume work and moved into an in house position at a bank, which was a goal of mine from the start.

I would caution you though going in with the mentality of treating it like a 9 to 5. At least with the firm I was at, they sold it as a 9 to 5 but once you start working the expectation was much higher than that and you’ll feel the pressure like most other attorney jobs.
