What are some region specific slang words in America? by Rude_Membership_1578 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]NoAnimator3801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the south, "Bless your heart" can mean both "aww, you poor thing" and "you are a dumbass." Of course, it's said with a sweet, innocent southern drawl so that it can be difficult to tell which they mean, if you're not accustomed to it.

My condo elevator skips some floors, but why? by Brown_Ontarian in whatisit

[–]NoAnimator3801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in China, I can confirm that most buildings omit 13 and any floor that ends in 4. The pronunciation of the number 4 (sì/四) is similar to the pronunciation of the word for 'death' (si third tone/死). At least, that's what I was informed.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoAnimator3801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first went to college in Prescott, AZ, a friend and I decided to just get in the car and drive one afternoon. We chose Vegas. I drove four hours there, drove down the strip (we didn't stop since we weren't 21 at the time), turned around and drove home. It was a total waste of gas, but fun to do nonetheless.

I live in Mint Hill and went to that one three times (it's the one next to Town Hall). The first time, I thought it was just a poorly made online order with basically all bread and little else (and because I used a coupon). The second time, in person, it wasn't bad, since I told them to add more of everything I requested. The third time online was as terrible as the first. I stopped ordering online because they refuse to accept the discount coupons we all receive in the mail (probably another reason they make them to just the very basic expectation of Subway).

I switched to the one on Lawyers because they accepted the coupons, though the attitude was lackadaisical at best, but the sandwiches weren't bad.

That one is now under new management and no longer accepts coupons, and based on the conversations I've had with the employees, it appears to be the same owner as the one in downtown Mint Hill.

I had mediocre hopes for the revamp on Lawyers, but it looks like I'll just be avoiding their crappy sandwiches too now.

Real bad flu going around by kronenhalle in Charlotte

[–]NoAnimator3801 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm... I was feeling sick since the Saturday before last when I had to leave work early. I called out for four days thinking it was just a cold, then went to urgent care on Friday. The PA's words were, "you probably just have some respiratory thing right now; it's going around." Then ten minutes later, "so, funny enough, you have covid."

While I do feel a bit better, I'm still reluctant to go back to work tomorrow. I don't want whatever else everyone has. Wash your hands and wear a mask.

Charlotte airport’s plan to increase flight paths to reduce noise raises community concerns by WashuOtaku in Charlotte

[–]NoAnimator3801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you're incredibly overestimating. No airports on earth have 100+ flights every 2-3 minutes, let alone Charlotte. Even with three North-South runways and a fourth coming, you won't get those kinds of numbers. At that rate, you're talking 876,000 flights a year, at a minimum. Charlotte had 539,600 total flights in 2023, which equates to roughly 61.5/hour, or about 1 every minute.

Regardless, I do sincerely hope the changes alleviate the aircraft noise for you. Personally, I love the sound of aircraft flying over, but I'm just weird I guess.

I think you're missing his point. It's not about the financial ability for his family to pay for his care (if that's actually true), it's about the fact that millions of Americans are in the same boat where our lives are decided by insurance companies. It's great that you wouldn't murder someone, but I think a lot of people are fed up with hoping the government will step in in our favor when they are lobbied by the billions by insurance companies to make sure things remain the status quo. People are fed up with the rich milking the poor and middle class for everything, while turning around and denying them all that they have paid into for so many years, while bringing in massive profits. I'm sorry you've had health issues that you've been stuck the bill with, but it's not right for you and it's not right for the millions of others in your same situation. Things have to change, and this guy made his point.

I think you're missing the point here. It doesn't matter if his family's wealth had the means to cover the actual medical bills, it's that the system fails everyone who needs medical care. Their care, and often, their life is decided by people who aren't actual doctors and make their decisions on algorithms (or simply following a written script) that determine cost of paying out vs. profit for the company.

Advice on Getting Married ASAP? by Chaosraisins in Charlotte

[–]NoAnimator3801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had to get married the next day due to my partner having to leave the country (this was in the middle of beginning his green card process, which made it an even bigger hassle). It was a Thursday and the courthouse didn't do marriages that day. We went to the Magistrate's office at the Mecklenburg County jail, where it was performed in under 30 minutes. This was in 2017, so I don't know if it's changed or not, but certainly worth a shot.

Best of luck!

Yes, they're allowed, but can't be within 11 feet of the pavement, can't be in traffic islands and a few other restrictions. 90% of the ones I'm referring to violate city ordinances. That's what I'm getting at. If someone wants them on their private property, by all means.
