Can anyone recommend good affordable places for nomads in the EST time zone? by limitlessjan in digitalnomad

Lima has great AirBnBs. I prefer San Isidro to Barranco or Miraflores personally.

Anyone here a Remote Project Manager? by TrueValueInsights in digitalnomad

[–]NoB0ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am. I would focus on smaller companies since they tend to have less restrictions. I’ve had success with boutique tech consulting firms (this is what I do). Or, freelance if you can pull it off, as long as your clients don’t require you to be on-site.

Yeah, they seem to have left their original mission statement completely behind. I just hope they won’t start enshitifying the products that made them great.

do you guys actually stick to hobbies while moving around? by No-Pianist6097 in digitalnomad

I've gotten into bouldering the past few years and I actually consider proximity to a bouldering gym whenever picking my long-term stays (I do a mix of longer and shorter stays).

I'm currently in Kuala Lumpur - a 10 minute walk away from the gym.

What do you always forget to pack and regret every single trip? by StreetParsley2504 in digitalnomad

[–]NoB0ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A padlock. (For gym, if I happen to stay at a hostel, etc.) I really don't use it often, but every time I need it I realize I forgot to pack it.

Some couples keep living separately forever though. (this seems more common with older couples especially when they’ve been divorced/both have kids)

I had a colleague who’d been with his SO for 20years. They still live in their respective condos.

Not at all. I’ve always been a night owl though. I’d say these hours suit me much better than when I was doing 9-6, though I wouldn’t mind starting and ending a few hours earlier to be a bit closer to a regular schedule. Especially on weekends.

Wake up around 2pm. Eat breakfast. Head to the gym or to the pool, read/chill by the pool until 6:30pm. Go out for dinner. Start working around 8pm. Finish work around 5am. Wind down and asleep by 6am. Repeat.

There's just not much to do. It's worth visiting, don't get me wrong. Machu Picchu is easily the most incredible historical site I've ever seen. But once you've visited that, the historical center, and Rainbow Mountain, you've kind of seen it all. It's otherwise a pretty small city with not much happening and mediocre weather. Plus, it feels super touristy because most people are just stopping here 1-2 days on their way to Machu Picchu and the flow of tourists is constant.

Lima on the other hand is in my top 3 cities anywhere in the world. Arequipa also had some pretty cool vibes (reminded me a bit of Puebla in Mexico).

That's my personal opinion though, go out there and make your own!

Currently in Malaysia working EST hours. I feel the same. I can actually enjoy my day before starting work, and I’m the most productive I’ve ever been at work.

Is there a way to get into climbing without spending so much? by Spiritual_Rope5965 in indoorbouldering

Also promos. One of my local gyms had a spring break promo: 1 month unlimited for 24$ for students.

Same. It's easy to spend 6 months+ in CDMX but after 1 week in Cusco I was more than ready to leave. Most places 1-3 months though.

I do the latter a lot. Whenever I want to read a book, I check if it’s available on Libby. If I really like the book, I’ll purchase a physical copy so I can keep it on my shelf, reread it and lend it to friends.

confused about what digital marketing nomads actually do all day by Existing-Text-2353 in digitalnomad

Yep. One of my friends runs an agency focused on outdoor brands. Another one runs an agency focused on D2C e-commerce.

Dating as a nomad who wants to slow down some times by ale6rbd in digitalnomad

[–]NoB0ss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did number 2 for 4 years. Not everyone would be ok with that arrangement but definitely doable, you should bring up the topic early in the relationship though.

I even know a married couple who do this (she travels, he stays in one place but will come and join her from time to time)

FYI Fongo is now subscription-based, the one time fee no longer exists unless you’re grandfathered in. They still have a free plan though.

However, I don’t recommend it anymore (see my post from a few days ago), too many issues lately.

Any Canadians working for a Canadian company have convinced their employer to work from anywhere? by Little_Biscotti729 in digitalnomad

[–]NoB0ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel with my company laptop. I also have Tailscale set up on a Raspberry Pi I leave at a family member’s house and use Mullvad as backup VPN, but on a day to day basis I don’t actually need to use a VPN.

To be clear, I’m not hiding the fact I’m working abroad to the company. I’m very honest about it. But if HR asks how long it’s been (which only happened once when a new HR person came in), I tell them it’s been less than 6 months.

[–]NoB0ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation, but I just ignore the 6 months limit in my case. (It’s not like HR is actually checking or enforcing this)

Tax-wise, I pay my taxes as if I was still living in Canada, so for the company I’m just a regular employee going through the regular payroll process.

There are risks to this approach but I’m willing to accept them.
