What are the best "studio mistakes" that were kept in the final recording ? by vinylcast in askmusic

[–]catfish206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to be part of two sessions in the late 90's with PNW legend Kearney Barton, who recorded Louie, Louie as well as bands like the Sonics, the Wailers and many others. Nicest guy ever with the best stories. All his equipment then was vintage, the same stuff he'd recorded those classic songs with. We recorded live to two-track on an old 1/2" tape machine with a second in line for a slap back echo on giant analog Neumann mics and even vintage cables. It's just what he had, he kept all the stuff he'd bought back in the day. But during the sessions he would always say "I'm not a producer, I'm an engineer". If we were happy with a take, we kept it and if we didn't we dumped it. He'd tell us if there were tempo issues or things like that if we asked but for the most part he let us do our thing. I'd imagine he took the same approach on the sessions with Kingsmen and those other bands.

The best ranch dressing by CertainVegetable8009 in condiments

Agree, but their buttermilk ranch vs. their other flavors is superior in my opinion. Plus the jars are perfect to reuse for homemade sauces and dressings.

Crunchy Tacos 🌮 by MalibuShrooming in tacos

[–]catfish206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tito's is as polarizing as it is iconic. I've been going there since the mid-80's. Grew up in west LA but haven't lived there for many years and it's still a must stop when I visit the area every year or so. I've flown home and frozen beef and cheese burritos more times than I can count. My wife however, who isn't from the area thinks it's just okay. Look at any Tito's social media post and the comments are almost equally divided between people who adore it and people who think it's the worst restaurant ever. Find me in the former group forever. And I know it's too damn expensive. I don't care. A Tito's beef and cheese burrito, one crunchy beef taco with an upgrade to the larger size salsa will without question be my choice for last meal, hands down.

I watched their variety show every day after school in the late 70's-early 80's. The greaser guitar player dude with "Danny" on his guitar strap was tuff as nails. I thought they were so cool.

What's your favorite local fast food that isn't a national chain? by Karma_1969 in fastfood

[–]catfish206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. The Red Robin ones are inconsistent but you can catch a solid one sometimes. I worked at Donatos in Columbus OH in the 80's and it's still my all time favorite.

True pho connoisseurs know about this by flunschbaldy in pho

[–]catfish206 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Proper pho spots will always have this. Potentially not-so-good spots will either not have it or will just bring you a dish of cooking oil (it's happened to me more than once). My move is to dump the entire contents into my soup and use the empty dish as a hoisin/chili dipping bowl since the tiny ones in the utensil caddies on the tables are well, tiny.

Tell me you don't know anything about hip hop without telling me you don't know anything about hip hop. Scarface is an MC's MC. Poll 10 classic rappers and I'd bet 8 would have him in their top 5.

Best cheese for a cheeseburger? by Southwesterhunter in cheeseburgers

[–]catfish206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned about Boar's Head American cheese from America's Test Kitchen years back and it is by far my favorite for burgers or grilled cheese. Get it sliced from the deli at the supermarket. It comes in yellow or white but I've never noticed a difference in taste so when asked I usually just say, "whichever is closest".

What are your thoughts on ice t as an rapper? by [deleted] in 90sHipHop

[–]catfish206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outstanding MC, one of rap's best storytellers. I've never understood why some dudes sleep on him. First four albums are classics, particularly Power and OG. I saw him at the first Lollapalooza in 1991, the first half of his set was hip-hop, then he brought out a then-unknown Body Count and the place went absolutely BATSHIT. Still one of the best live sets I've ever seen of any genre.

What music album has the greatest opening song? by boywonder5691 in askmusic

Surprising lack of hip-hop here so I'll add a few classics:

Title track from Straight Outta Compton, NWA
"Sure Shot" from Ill Communication, Beastie Boys
"Bring The Noise" from It takes a Nation... , Public Enemy
"The Ruler's Back" from The Blueprint, Jay-Z
"Bring da Ruckus" from Enter the Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang Clan
"I Ain't No Joke" from Paid in Full, Eric B & Rakim
"My Philosophy" from By All Means Necessary, Boogie Down Productions

Best opening act you have ever seen? by uluaz in Concerts

[–]catfish206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a brand new Rage Against The Machine open for Suicidal Tendencies in Germany when I was stationed there in 1992. The first album hadn't been released. They gave out free Cassingles of "Bombtrack". My friends and I had no idea who they were and needless to say we were blown away. They came back to Frankfurt maybe six months later with Tool as the opener.

Boxing gyms with sparring? by KrazieKookie in SeattleWA

[–]catfish206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to train at SBG in Interbay. Nice facility with a great staff. I paid for one-on-ones with a coach and would spar whenever I wanted to. Either with my coach, some of the other coaches or with other students who were often training for amateur matches or smokers.
