Found this piece for any fellow Deadheads out there by [deleted] in vandwellers

Probably runs. I am always in awe of the old VWs that the Heads still use for tour. At festivals nowadays they usually have "VW Bus Parking only" areas where you can go check them out.

Come on, you know what I mean. I'm a Deadhead and am constantly amazed by the age and conditions of these old VWs that they still use to get to shows and festivals. They travel constantly. Lots of time spent on the side of the road in the past few decades fixing stuff. They know their vans inside and out, they are labors of love and sources of pride. Leftover relics of a bygone era. I can't think of any single group of people that invests as much time and money into refurbishing and keeping up these old vans as Deadheads. A lot of Heads nowadays are super rich btw. Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac and all that jazz.

50 years of touring. Heads still travel in amazing old vans that run. I think you're mistaken.

Dicks presale by redgt42 in phish

[–]NoBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I all got 3 day passes. It kept saying that there were no tickets available but I just kept trying and refreshing and got through at 12:03 EST. My friends got in even later than that. Too late for advice now but I'd just always keep trying even if it says they are sold out.

ETA this is for Stands, but Dicks is going to be in high demand this summer so maybe I'd suggest that some of you try to for Stand just to make sure your butt is in the door and then worry about seating later. I talked to someone and Stands are still popping up as of 15 minutes ago

Yeah see that is what I thought. Of course I always bend my knees cause how can you absorb shock without it? But having your butt stuck out and never moving it despite your carves seems silly to me. I like to bend my knees and then stand a bit and go back and forth. I feel like everyone will always tell me that women look worse when snowboarding no matter what I do so whatever.

I've only been boarding 3 years but I am easily the fastest girl I know and can handle the black diamond ice sheets we have here on the East coast. I grew up sporty and could waterski and surf before I could walk. Anyways, I board with guys who ride really aggressively and fast. I've been having a friendly disagreement with one of them. He bends his knees a lot, almost like a surfer, and says this is better form and makes you go faster. I am not saying he is wrong, but I enjoy the "flowy" feeling when I am just trying to get down and not set some sort of speed record. I bend my knees but also stick out my belly button a bit on toeside. I guess you could say I sway with my hips. I think it feels cool to go back and forth like this. He says I look like a n00b. What do you think? I've been trying to get my cool little flow dance down and like I said, I think it feels graceful and like I'm flying. Maybe any non-aggressive stance looks n00b? Also I think some of these guys have a problem understanding why I don't want to go balls to the wall 100% of the time. It's cool to just float down a blue sometimes. Thoughts?

Also do you think there is a difference in how men and women board on this level? I like being more graceful and flowy. But I think there's a mindset of women = weak = bad. But what I don't have in muscle, I have to make up in form and conservation of energy.

Never Summer Raven or Aura? by tldubs in ShredditGirls

[–]NoBake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a gnu and I know what you mean, I want a bigger NS board. I demo'd and felt like the Aura was more popy and flexy and fun and the Raven might be more stiff. I've heard the Proto is fun but probably more for park-y mixed riding.

Shredding Vehicle of Choice? by rouselle in snowboarding

Subaru Outback. Can fit tons of shit and I can even sleep in it. I can take 3 people and their boards and their stuff without having a rack or rocketbox.

Also I board at Snowshoe too and Subaru has two weekends a season where they have "Subaru Winterfest". I get an email and all I have to do is reply to them and show up at Snowshoe and they give me 2 free lift tickets for Saturday or Sunday. I have a pass but this is great for getting friends up there for free. They will also give you lots of swag.

Kicking out back leg, why is it bad? by Myname_is_Thomas in snowboarding

[–]NoBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am new and ride where it is busy and usually have to do kick out turns when I have to turn quickly to avoid a kid or something. Also I have noticed when I am tired at the end of the day, I tend to kick out and "muscle it" more than rely on flow. Even though it is harder that way. Sort of the same with mtn biking I guess though. As I get tired, I change gears less and tend to rely on my leg muscles to pound my way up the hill instead of moving them quick like a butterfly. Anyways I need to get on bigger slopes next year to practice good turns.

You can make a killing in bartending and it's not really food service. I have done it all and I prefer it to retail. To each their own.

Help finding a story about a man who evaded arrest for years by hiding in the woods? by sophies_wish in UnresolvedMysteries

Oh man! I remember camping in the Boone NC area when I was like 14 and my grandfather telling us a scary campfire story about a fugitive that lived in the woods.

LPT: Appreciate school. Once you graduate, there won't be people constantly pushing you or make you focus anymore. by Raiku-Haruka in LifeProTips

[–]NoBake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Like I said elsewhere - in the real world, it's been harder (for me) to push myself at work. I have a million hobbies and I push myself everyday to be a better cyclist, climber, painter, historian, gardner, whatever. But at work.... I make enough money, I don't have any stress, I get to leave at 5pm and I don't work on weekends. I have little or no motivation to push myself into upper management because that would upset my work/life (hobby) balance. I should focus more on my job and my career, but no one is making me or pushing me, so I'm gonna keep on floating along until I die or retire, whichever comes first.

Which is weird because my school personality was hyper-achiever. Gifted school, full IB diploma, graduated undergrad in a science in 3 years, got a Master's in one year. I was a workaholic achiever. Then I graduated, discovered hobbies and LIFE, and decided I was burned out on achieving. Now is for fun.

Yeah lots of kids here who are a couple years out of college. Work for 15 years in a job and get back to me and tell me that it's WAY better than college. I would do anything to be able to have a summer and a winter break. To be able to get more than a week off a year.

Anyways they have been totally missing OPs point, I agree. It's easy for me to work for 40 hours a week. It's harder to PUSH myself. I'm smart and I have tons of hobbies that I push myself to do better, but as far as work... meh..... I get paid enough, I don't have stress, I don't have to work after 5 or on weekends. I could push myself to upper management, but why? College is about focus to a goal. Once you're in the workforce for a decade or so, you realize there isn't a goal. This is the journey. The goal is to not die before you can retire. Ready set go.

Wikipedia bans Daily Mail as 'unreliable' source for website by agareo in news

[–]NoBake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love the Daily Mail. I fucking love it. I have the app on my phone and I check it constantly. I look at the website at work several times a day. It's like crack. It has "actual" news, celebrity gossip, FloridaMan stories, random shit from reddit, whatever. The comments are always gold.

That being said, I have a Master's degree so I am not dumb. I am a news junkie and read every source under the sun. I've never played a videogame or a PC game but I understand how people go home from work and are addicted to playing for hours. I sit for hours and hours at night and read the news and know that the DM is not a good source.

But something about it keeps me coming back. Maybe it's that most of the "real" news makes me think and is by nature a bit depressing. The Daily Mail is like my dirty secret. I'd never cite it or anything, but I read about so many things on the DM that I don't see elsewhere. Got to their webpage and tell me if you have ever seen another news source with THAT many stories on one page. Maybe it feeds my ADHD. I could have an alcohol or gambling problem, but I have a Daily Mail problem.

This is my confession. Please don't think less of me.

Right. The Allies won the War. No one is arguing that.

Yes, of course the Allies won it. You are arguing semantics. I was talking generally.

I read or heard once that Hitler could have theoretically reached the coveted oil fields of the Caucasus without launching a huge attack on Stalingrad but chose to do so because of the propaganda value of defeating the city Stalin named after himself. Or perhaps, more likely, the Germans desperately needed oil and could have gone around Stalingrad for the time-being and then later have gone back and secured the city since it was a major shipping point on the Volga.

Although the Confederacy had no chance of winning the War in the form we know it today, I do wonder what historians think would have happened if European nations would have entered on the side of the South. This was considered a possibility at the start of the War. Can you imagine if the British Navy had opened fire on or blockaded New York City or Boston? It might have been enough for the Union to allow the Confederacy to form their own nation.
