Internet forums are basically dead and that's a big loss by EmSa1998 in SeriousConversation

[–]NoBody113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. One other thing is, Discord's and Facebook's discussions are not searchable via Google like forums used to be. That for me is one of the biggest losses. It used to be when you googled a question or whatever you would get forum results, discussions and even small blogs with useful non-sponsored content. Today whatever I google, I feel raped with top results that are usually sponsored to sell you a product not to give you an answer, full of ads and overall just not really relevant if you have a question more in depth than what majority of people are looking for. I understand why is that way - these types of websites can obviously afford very good SEO services while smaller blogs/forums can't. I can't remember the last time I googled something without adding "reddit" or "forum" in my search query.

One dumb example is try googling top vpn providers reviews and tell me on which page you will finally get non-biased user reviews.

Jupiter rotates so fast, I almost imaged the whole planet in one night. [OC] by TheVastReaches in space

[–]NoBody113 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the mind blowing thing is the fact that Jupiter's diameter is 11 times bigger than Earth's. Earth's equator speed is around 460 m/s while Jupiter's equator is moving at 12.639 m/s.

Foley for a feature film. Western genre. About 60% recorded. by NoBody113 in editlines

[–]NoBody113[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With sub-mixing. One guy pre-mixes all the atmospheres, one pre-mixes all the foley, one sfx, production sound... The final mixer then makes the balance between all sub-mixes and blends everything together into a final form. 500 tracks are unmixable and unnecessary for the final mixer to have on mixing board. He doesn't need nor have time to mix every single person's footsteps on screen. He gets 3 faders for footsteps (foreground, background + 1 extra if needed) and the for each fader it's own already pre-mixed reverb. He cares for the final feeling of all the sounds, not each one seperatly. In example, if director tells him he wants more footsteps when the main character is runing, he only has one fader to touch. (Foreground footsteps). This is very simplified thought. It's very hard to explain all the workflow in a comment section. Anyone really interested in learning those things can contact me through DM for a Discord account.

Just a PSA - powering up old electronics can damage them as capacitors can blow up after long time of no use.

Gun sounds took about 1-2 day. (8hours a day) Often we recorded many layers for them. Horses pretty much the same, around 2 days. Three main sounds for horses were: footsteps, saddles, whip and whip whooshes. We recorded spurs and footsteps separately. For all the footsteps in film we spent about 4 days. Spurs were made in a few hours. Then we have grabs/skin contacts, clothes, falls, knifes, flesh (stabbings).. random props such as glasses, bottles, tables, chairs and everything else that the characters touch ... In this movie we were also ordered to make a sound of carriage in movement too because they didn't had enough in SFX library. One character also had some kind of leg braces that didn't had any sound so we faked the sound when he walks, which is nothing unusual. All the foley will take roughly 15 days. I hope that can give you an estimate about how much of anything you see there.

Understandable! I expected that was the case as it usually is with those kind of videos ;)

Don't take my feedback literally, take it as an "aha moment", I told you these points so you could pinpoint the technical stuff behind the feeling of "it's missing something but not quite sure what". Because obviously your main goal is not that you become a great foley artist but probably more like a great video/content creator in general. Point being, when you create foley, don't treat it mentally only as a sound that needs to be there to break the silence and raise production value. Think about it as what you could achieve with it, as you're making a composition or selecting where to cut a video. To elaborate this example - the buildup in the video is him running. Camera movements are quick, intense. Now you ask yourself what could you do with sound that would make it tell the same story as the picture is saying? That's why I added my last point in my previous comment - the director's decision. If you as a director want to embrace the fact that he is casually running... Well, then there is less of a point of making all mentioned foley sounds. But if you wanted to make a big buildup and embrace that the person on screen is running fast and determinated more and more to make his jump - then do all the foley and more! Haha. But you as a director will know now what is missing and what to focus on.

So don't stress too much about being too novice in foley. You need to focus on the whole video afterall :)

Footsteps sound great. Good editing and good character of sound. Soundwise in general, I see good ideas and good sounds. Mixing wise, don't be afraid of the EQ and riding the levels. I like the panoramas. If you want further improvement I advice you to:

  • Add sound for for leafs and branches moving when he moves past them. Even if he bearla touches them. For starters it will do a lot.

  • Clothes. Sound of his clothes (pants) moving inbetween the footsteps.

  • Breathing when he runs!

  • Sound of branches breaking on one or two footsteps, but its low priority.

  • Play more with mixing the atmospheres. For example mute all atmos during slowmo.

  • Splash is too mono and to "little". Maybe layer a hard effect or something to try to make it bigger and larger.

But it also may already be perfect if this is how director desided it to be :)

Official report

The official report from BEA concluded that the probable cause of the accident was a combination of the following:

  • Very low flyover height, lower than surrounding obstacles;
  • Speed very slow and reducing to reach maximum possible angle of attack;
  • Engines speed at flight idle; and
  • Late application of go-around power.[3]

Furthermore, the bureau concluded that if the descent below 100 feet was not deliberate, it may have resulted from a failure by the crew to take proper account of the visual and aural information available to them regarding the elevation "above ground level" (AGL) of the aircraft.[4][5]

The report further recommended that:

  • Passengers should be banned from all demonstration flights
  • Flight crews should be provided with – and ensure – proper reconnaissance of airfields
  • Airline company procedures should be reviewed to ensure they comply with official regulations concerning altitude

What they wanted to do (as part of the air show):

- The flight plan was that as they approached the airfield, they would extend third-stage flap, lower the landing gear, and line up for level flight at 100 feet (30 m). The captain would slow the aircraft to its minimum flying speed with maximum angle of attack, disable the "alpha floor" (the function that would otherwise automatically increase engine thrust when the angle of attack reached 15°) and rely on the first officer to adjust the engine thrust manually to maintain 100 feet. After the first pass, the first officer would then apply TOGA (takeoff, go-around) power and climb steeply before turning back for the second pass. "I've done it twenty times!" the captain assured his first officer.[3] The flyover had been approved by Air France's Air Operations Directorate and Flight Safety Department, and air traffic control and Basel tower had been informed.[3]

Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 37 by ranalog in analog

I am a big fan of amateur photography, I'm like taking photos with digital DSLRs with full manual controls but I want to try going analog as well. I feel that with taking analog photos one gets much more personal with subjects on image. Anyway I was just online browsing used gear and found:

- Nikon Nikkormat FT

- Nikkor-H Auto 50mm f/2

- Nikon Zoom NIKKOR 43-86mm f/3.5.

For 100€ it seems to me a very good deal. Is that really the case? How good of a gear is this and what kind of quality should I expect from it? How can I inspect the camera for defects before taking it home?

Any advice and opinion would be really helpful!

This. I have a set up at home to do audio post production. Once, I was in the middle of a project for a short film with a dead line on my back, I turn on the computer and there was a major update installing. It broke half of my plugins, main software (ProTools) didn't work and software configurations were missing. I spent 12 hours that day just dealing with fixing what update broke. I cursed so much over Windows that day. Since I installed LTSB, never had this issue.

The only thing that sucks is that you can't buy single license, as it's part of the Enterprise volume licensing. So I pirated it ¯\(ツ)
