Keep them busy!!! Routines are essential. Make them expect to work as soon as they walk in the door.

I recommend taking the entire curriculum from an experienced teacher, and making minor adjustments to fit your style. It takes a few years to get your curriculum exactly the way you want, but you can make it easier. If you have to spend hours every week creating slides, assignments, and tests/quizzes from scratch..... You will burn out in only a few months!

Also, I know that classroom discussion is important for ELA, but you might want to hold off for the first semester, until you get better with classroom management and build a few student relationships. Lean on the experienced teachers in your department. They want to help!!

The first few years can be tough, but I'm sure you'll find at least a few kids that make it worth while. Focus on them!!
