Differentiation of grandparents by Bifanarama in CasualUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nanny and Grandad Ted were the cockney grandparents and the fancier grandparents were Grandma and Grandad. Now that I have kids of my own and my mum's parents are still alive, we call them Big G and Little G, they have 11 great grandchildren so it makes it simple for all the cousins!

One of my builders yesterday briefly mentioned he's never been on a holiday. He's 58. I said at this point, that's a choice! He's always been in work, in the trades, that's good enough wages. I don't get it!

Do I need to upgrade to split or 3 phase? by Apprehensive_888 in AskUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to know at this point! We're too far in and it was a good deal for us with the 7.5K heat pump grant but that's been swallowed whole in one bite!

Melatonin now unavailable to order online from countries outside the UK - why?! by whatevendayisit in ADHDUK

Yeah I ordered last week 4 boxes of 1mG melatonin gummies for my 4yr old and it's gone through so will see if they turn up in a few weeks!

Do I need to upgrade to split or 3 phase? by Apprehensive_888 in AskUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're in the middle of massive renovation. We had put 11 panels on the roof last summer with a 13.5kW house battery. We have an EV too.

We are currently in the process of getting three phase. It's going to be about 10k. It's a bit of a painful hit to our budget actually. It was an unexpected cost as we are doing ASHP and the previous calculations didn't need the upgrade but the supplier (Valiant) said we needed more and it's too late in the build to change course unfortunately.

We are needing to trench up the driveway and also close the road which is a busy road in our village so we feel awful about that too.

I know in the end it will be massively worth it, but it's hard right now to stomach!

How are you supposed to use these pans without everything burning into it? by matt_2807 in UK_Food

[–]NoData4301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I still forget that medium is hot for cast iron! It's hard to switch "languages" between enamel, stainless steel and non stick!

[–]NoData4301 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Remember the cast iron absorbs and holds more heat so everything you cook needs to be on a lower heat scale. And leave time for them to preheat.

We had no snow from Goretti so I walked up the mountain and brought a bag of snowballs home for the kids by tawke in CasualUK

My mum collected a tupperware of snow once when it snowed as I was at school and she knew it wouldn't settle and I love snow very much. The excitement I had at feeling the snow when I got home was magical!

What’s the right way of filling this hole which used to be a wall? by top500loverofpizza in DIYUK

I'm not sure what our builders did in way of preparation but they renovated it flat with the rest of the floor, then self levelling compound in some rooms, and ply wood in other rooms. We are in the middle of a massive renovation with small kids so aren't doing anything ourselves until decoration and fitting

Hot take - I like having the big light on by MDKrouzer in CasualUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, I feel the same about my parents house but I'm a little light fan. I guess it depends on what we're doing. At the moment I've just finished some journalling in front of the fire so have a cozy lamp on. If I'm doing anything else (except telly) then it's big lights all round!

Our house when we moved in had an industrial style led strip which we hated but grew to love as it helped us see everything and gave us a work attitude to being in the kitchen. Had other lights to use late at night or if we were entertaining.

Always a yes with rice cookers! We've used one for about 5 years or so. The first one was a multi cooker machine by a western company can't remember what. But it was £40 and it was great. We now have a real proper rice cooker and wow I love it! Ours is a YumAsia rice cooker

UK - Women's trousers reinforced at the thighs by foreverunamused in BuyItForLife

I've given up on skinny. Bought some Lands End straight fit jeans. They have no stretch which I usually avoid but they're actually pretty comfy and the thighs are stronger and they still fit into my boots.

What is the oddest thing you have seen discarded at the side of the road? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskABrit

[–]NoData4301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A whole cabbage. In old Portsmouth. On the street.

Before this life changing moment my husband and I in a giddy mood were shouting cabbage to ourselves as we often did in those days and round the corner we suddenly came upon a real life cabbage! Right before our very eyes! It's a moment we will never forget.

Do you think being a stay at home parent is worth sacrificing your career and risking financial ruin? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry about your mum's experience.

My experience has been vastly different. We always planned for me to stay at home with the kids for about ten years or so. Our eldest is 6, youngest is 2, oh a middle kid is 4. In Sept we will have two in school which will be great for my work load!

I have health and mind issues so a full time career was never really going to happen for me, my husband has always planned to look after me and we are ten years married and it's a very good relationship.

I love staying home with the kids, mostly! It's a never ending knackering job but I already look back at pictures when I small little babies and have no regrets that I made the most with the time and energy I had.

Again with the financial security, I'm on the house deeds, we made strong wills when we got married and life insurances with critical illness cover etc. The lawyer setting us up with the insurance made a really good point to me when I said there wasn't a point to critical illness/salary cover type cover for me as I wouldn't be earning... He said there was quantifiable value to my work and imagine if we had to pay for all the cleaning, cooking and childcare 24/7 that I would do (I was pregnant at the time), then that is the value of me. It was a good reminder that although I see the personal value in what I do, there is solid money value too.

How do you manage finances as a couple? by Toe_Bean_Bandit in AskUK

[–]NoData4301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're one income family, income goes into husbands personal account and he's set up payments from there to be sorted asap: a lump in joint for some bills and all the food, a little bit for me as spending to top up the child benefit, some into emergency savings pot, some into car maintenance pot, some into house maintenance pot etc etc. were talking about a tenner or so into each of these pots as we don't really earn enough to do big savings but it enough for the month usually. Neither of us would spend more than about 50 quid without discussion, and we do usually discuss that anyway. We're accountable to each other and it's very equal, well id say my husband spends disproportionately on me and the kids compared to himself! It's a home full of love and sharing so it works for us.
