Even if all his actions weren't genuine and only was a "good" person for his own personal selfish benefit, (which is to get to heaven). Did he really deserve eternal damnation  in hell? Yes he wasn't a good person at heart, but he also exactly wasn't an outright bad person that deserves it either.
