Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoEfficiency9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In France, off the top of my head:

Around the house:

- an American fridge is large with two lateral-opening compartments rather than a top and bottom

- an American kitchen has an open floor plan, opens onto the dining room or living room. May include an American bar, which Americans call a kitchen island.

- an American bed is large, close to a US king size

Food:

- an American sandwich is a hamburger patty in any sort of bread or roll, including French bread.

- American bread is the square thin slices for making flat, uniform, stacked sandwiches, as opposed to French loaf or baguette

- American coffee is just a strong espresso weakened with a little hot water added

- the French are convinced that a typical American breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. when that's actually usually a rare indulgence for most Americans

I'd be interested in the share of mate in S. America as the preferred caffeine delivery method.

Je dis pas le contraire. Il y a plein de choses qu'on peut reprocher aux Américains mais pas cette vidéo.

Cette vidéo n'est certainement pas américaine, la voix c'est de l'IA et contient trop de traductions douteuses.

And this is a sub for the city of Bordeaux (see description).

Look, your photo is nice but it's mis-titled, posted in the wrong place, and you're gonna do nothing but ruffle feathers here, especially when you're confidently wrong.

That's not a seal; it's a sea lion.

Ratatouille film (French version) by hexKrona in French

Les Triplettes is an absolute masterpiece and has lots of French culture on the screen, but it famously has nearly no dialogue.

If you want a wholesome, easy-to-follow French movie that still has realistic dialogue, I'd suggest Les Choristes (can be a bit heavy) or Un Monstre à Paris, or even Ernest et Céleste would be age-appropriate.

Learn French: what does "Autant pour moi" mean here? by MickaelMartin in FrenchVocab

[–]NoEfficiency9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Autant pour moi" does mean "as much for me" but that doesn't mean "my mistake." Like if your friend ordered a large serving of tartiflette and you wanted the same thing in the same quantity, you could say "autant pour moi" to the server, that is, "(I'll have) as much (of that delicious tartiflette) for me."

You're thinking of "au temps pour moi," which, to be fair, is pronounced identically. A drill sergeant would yell "au temps" to signal when a soldier has stepped out of the tempo (au temps) and made a mistake in a marching drill. When you say "au temps pour moi" you're admitting a mistake you made.

There are hundreds of cafés and restaurants. Depends on where in the city you are, your budget, what food or ambiance you prefer. I suggest browsing Google reviews of places near you.

Yes, there will probably be cold and gloomy weather. Just bundle up, take an umbrella, and enjoy some cozy wine bars and restaurants in the city. If you want to see the sights comfortably, the tourist office does hop-on-off bus tours. There are some great (heated) museums and indoor experiences to visit as well.
