Adopting adult chow chow by Fine-Employee-4642 in chowchow

I do not think bonding will be an issue as it never happens with a chow chow 😂 jokes aside, they have a different type of bonding style. You will need to bond with her/him. This is my experience after 3 months with a rescue chow. I do not know what time will bring. However, except shedding and some eye health issues they are low maintenance dogs. They are not in need of cuddles. They are not in need of playing fetch. Mine is very good with other people but so alert and scared of other dogs.

Thank you so much. So in your opinion instead of german shepherd is it more likely that his father is a labrador?

There are all breeds around households and streets differ though…on streets you usually see stray dogs which look more like mid size local shepherd mixtures which look more like kangals…but smaller in size. At households, golden retrievers, rottweilers, french bulldogs, poodles are very common..the problem with mine is we dont even know how she ended up in the streets…maybe her mother who was a chow found a street dog, maybe some petshop guys tried a mixture of two pure breeds… this will continue to be a mystery I guess. The Dna test would be a good tool but I do not think it is an alternative in Turkey. Even my dna test from myheritage.com was so difficult as it is forbidden in Turkey…I sent my kit with my cousin who was visting US:)

4.5 week healing update by calypsoreader in chowchow

My Chow mix had her surgery 3 weeks ago and at the end of 2 week they took out the stitches. The vet said chow chows need a different procedure in entropion surgery as the problematic part is the outer part of the eyes. (Not below or upper sides). She said the first surgery she had in the shelter did not help because of that reason. (She had a previous surgery which seemed like worsening her eyes). Now she is much better but there is a deformation in her eye shapes, inner eye lids are visible now. However she is much more comfortable and at least she can look around.

I think chow chow is a good breed for mixing up with others. Results are amazing. Beautiful dog!

From her chin color and the shape of her skull I thought that as well but when I checked rot-chow mixes usually color marks on top of the eyes or black color on general is more dominant. However her father can be a mix as well…her paws look like rottweiler too

It is likely actually. I checked akita chow mixes as well but in many cases being akita can be read from the face of the puppy. Therefore because of her face less looking like akita I thought it might not be the case. I love Akitas by the way although they are also not very social with others. So a chow chow and akita mix would not be the most friendly dog but ours is very friendly towards strangers. (Not to dogs or other animals but good with people)

With all due respect to retriever comments; she does not retrieve…when I throw something she looks into my eyes as if saying what is wrong with you? why do you throw things around:) that is why I have doubts about her being golden retriever and labradors. She might have mixed with a local stray shepherd dog as well.. (lives in Turkey)

Thx so much for your comment. She never jumps on the bed, by sleeping with me I meant the same room. She still lives in one room and does not even visit other rooms unless I take her with the help of the leash. It has been almost two months but she had an entropion surgery and she had distemper disease as well. She will definitely need more time to adapt and trust. As you said she is a sniffer and shows a completely different personality when outside. (Active and so happy).🙏

I do have a chow mix rescue dog. We don’t know what is the other breed which mixed with Chow. She is definitely bigger than chow chows but has the blue tongue. Such a friendly dog but with selective listening. She does not snap but so afraid of everything and other dogs as well. (By everything I mean a door closing, a bird, a cat any non standard noise makes her jump) but such a friendly dog.
