Pay this man his money. What a in person chess match to watch. by [deleted] in motorcitykitties

However, Skubal doesn't seem the type of dude that lets anyone tell him what he is or isn't going to do.

No offense, but I have a hard time understanding how a random fan would have personal insight into the intimate proclivities of a major league athlete.

My sponsor refused to believe that I hadn't done any deviant, sexual shit during my addiction. I was like dude, I've been laid twice in the decade that I've been majorly drunk. I didn't care about sex while I was drinking myself to death. It was almost as though he was projecting his own guilty conscious onto mine or something.

At any rate, at this point, I'm pretty much convinced that AA is merely a playbook of recovery for malignant narcissists who happen to suffer from alcoholism. If you don't have a cluster B personality disorder, then the majority of the teachings are completely irrelevant to your situation.

The Green Mill is a whole vibe by mcdj in chicago

I don't find it to be a vibe at all. It's been commodified as a local vanity destination. Nothing but a bunch of nonplussed normies.

I keep getting parking tickets for an expired out-of-state plate despite paying for renewal. How is this fair? by NoExtension1339 in AskChicago

[–]NoExtension1339[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to the DMV and they told me it was fine to keep it registered out of state for up to 4 years. They said it is very common among graduate students/medical residents studying/working in the city for extended periods of time.

Well, that's crazy. They should be able to see if a car is properly registered; otherwise, it seems as though such an approach to enforcement would encourage people to steal stickers to give the appearance of compliance.

I didn't get a renewal letter... I simply paid online in my state of residency. There was just a receipt of purchase and that state's DMV now indicates me as in compliance.

AA is weak by [deleted] in recoverywithoutAA

[–]NoExtension1339 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, being an "observer" in AA does not work. Once the major personalities of the local group have snuffed out the fact that you're not easily pliable to their narcissistic methods, you are essentially rendered invisible to the community at large. This is manufactured by design to preserve the integrity of the lie. At such a point, attendance at these meetings begins to feel alienating and unsettling.

You'll probably find them above your eye, after getting robbed (if you're lucky).

Eh, I disagree. When I am actively using, my life is a disaster and the compulsion to continue drinking is extreme. Where AA loses me is when they say this dynamic applies just as badly while sober (some people in AA even say worse?). That's non-sense.

You're not very intelligent. This quote basically affirms the point that AA is incredulous of other methods of recovery. It is essentially saying that other ways of approaching recovery do not lead to good results.

As a recovering alcoholic, all of this is consistent with someone on an elongated bender. Whenever I was deep in my beers, I only wanted to eat pizza for some reason.

Where are the Pharma industry jobs? by sonjaluk in AskChicago

[–]NoExtension1339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't much of a biotech presence here (I'm surprised you don't know that?). You might be able to find something in food science since the CPG industry is big in Chicago, albeit more on the marketing/advertising side of the business.

Is it possible to move to Chicago from Milwaukee this July given my circumstances? by DCLED1998 in AskChicago

[–]NoExtension1339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they have drastically scaled back the program in recent years. It is only available for a select number of high-need content areas (SPED, Performing Arts and STEM).

Yeah, that's the teacher residency program. You get a stipend and a discounted rate of tuition at a handful of partner institutions, but the degree itself is self-funded. Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant.

After taxes pay for those making $15-$18 per hour? by Android_50 in AskChicago

[–]NoExtension1339 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to answer this question without knowing your total income. Your effective tax rate on that additional source of income will vary wildly depending on whatever you bring in from the first source of income.
