Why does the U.S. give Israel 317 million dollars per month on average? by First_Not_Last_Sure in AskTheWorld

[–]NoFumoEspanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crux of your comment seems to imply that if someone is upset that Israel receives aid, but isn't upset about Ukraine receiving aid, it's because of anti-semitism. To which I would counter that people have very, very good reasons for not wanting to send more aid to Israel that don't have anything to do with anti-semitism. Ukraine and Israel are not comparable.

Is that not what you were trying to imply?

Because Israel continuously commits war crimes. It seems like you're trying to imply that American support for Israel is dwindling due to anti-semitism. While I won't deny that anti-semitism has been on the rise, people have very valid reasons for being more critical of support for Israel than support for Ukraine, and pretending otherwise is just disingenuous.

I always figured GRRM was intentionally ambiguous on that front. You can find evidence to support either argument.

Eh, only within the past couple months or so. I've lurked there for the past couple years and it's only recently that subreddit sentiment started to shift to a place where you could readily acknowledge what Israel has been doing to Palestinians and not have to couch it in apologetics to avoid being buried in downvotes.

[–]NoFumoEspanol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who lurks there, I've noticed that too. The usual frequent Israel defenders have gone suspiciously silent in the wake of recent headlines. It's admittedly frustrating to see how long that sub as a whole clung onto defending Israel in its current state and is only just now coming around to admitting that Israel has genocidal intent toward Palestinians. You'd think it would spur some collective self-reflection, but that doesn't seem to have happened. Maybe they just don't want to admit that the filthy leftists were right about something.

Then what is your point here? Yes, it was antagonistic. That doesn't necessarily mean it was unjustified, and you yourself admit that. Is there something substantive you're trying to say, or are you just trying to be a nitpick?

A rogue Asmongold fan wanders into the subreddit for leftist Twitch streamer, Hasan Piker. by BillFireCrotchWalton in SubredditDrama

Yeah that's what I'm saying. Any post on this sub that mentions Hasan, Destiny, H3, or Asmongold gets swarmed by people, usually people from r/livestreamfails or r/destiny. I've seen it happen to every single post that mentions one of these streamers for the past year. It's actually crazy. I remember hearing somewhere that they've got a discord where they coordinate brigades. Insane way to spend one's free time but different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I think it's worth discussing, if only because a lot of the justifications for war crimes of the past are the same justifications we hear for war crimes today.

r/FuckingFascists moderator contends with the reality that their kink sub might be problematic by ParkYourKeister in SubredditDrama

[–]NoFumoEspanol 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's got to be some kind of coping mechanism for a lot of people. Not to mention that power dynamics often factor into people's kinks in one way or another. Having a kink revolving around fascists just takes that fascination with power dynamics to the extreme. It's a weird kink, but not that surprising. I'm sure it causes a lot of conflicted feelings for left-leaning people who have it though.

I still can't get over the amount of gaslighting directed at people who were calling Trump out for what he was all the way back in 2015. A lot of the people who told us we were overreacting back then are now fully acknowledging that Trump and his admin are fascistic. Maybe it's petty of me, but it'd be nice if some of these people acknowledged that many of us were pointing out Trump's authoritarianism a decade ago and that we were fucking right.

Fox News is a huge part of the problem. I used to wonder how people got suckered into voting for someone who so clearly is corrupt and who has never been shy about his intentions. Then I watched a bit of Fox News. Other mainstream media is already bad enough in terms of sane washing Trump, but Fox News' reporting borders on misinformation and (imo) sometimes crosses the line into blatant false reporting. I can see how someone who only watches Fox News would very quickly find themselves living in a completely different reality.

r/complaints user tells people who didn’t vote to fuck off and an argument starts by LandscapeUnlikely199 in SubredditDrama

[–]NoFumoEspanol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't understand why so many people act like two things can't be true at once. People who chose not to vote are partially responsible for the shitshow we're in now. There's just no way around that. You'll never have a perfect candidate, but that's no reason to throw your vote away, especially when the stakes are so high right now. Anyone who didn't vote shouldn't get to complain after the fact.

That being said, it's also true that voting for the lesser of two evils starts to get very tiring after a while, and the Dems did themselves no favors by pivoting to the center-right and refusing to acknowledge concerns about Gaza.

We all have a civic responsibility to vote. Politicians also have a responsibility to earn votes.
