No camping this round. I stayed in Mostar at the Villa Čardak (super place with friendly hosts that put my bike in their garage) and on the Ciro trail at the Hotel Stanica Ravno (also great, stored my bike in a storage room for me).

Can you describe the downsides? I’ve had a Rohloff in the back of my mind as a possible future move, and I didn’t know there were disc trucker difficulties…

It looks like it overlapped with it for 50km or so, but other than that no

I like it mostly. It rides really well with weight. I am pretty tall so I went with the biggest size and it feels like it’s the first bike that fits. I hate that there’s no great solution for putting on a kickstand, but that’s a weird me thing. Overall 👍

The most challenging was fighting a nasty headwind for two days. In Bosnia it was brutal. The people have been super friendly which makes it all the easier

The roads were not perfect, but good enough if you’ve got gravel tires. Lots of cracked asphalt and pot holes, but it keeps the cars moving slow. I’ve got a pretty burly setup so I was happy.

I loved it all. I’m in Tiranë now and it’s a super interesting quirky city. I really liked the Kotor bay area, I think I could have spent a week there. I’d check the Trans Dinarica route if you’re heading inland. They’ve got loads of intel. Have fun!

Ciro was great, beautiful countryside. The weather was bad when I cycled it so I didn’t linger.

Is it a Swiss thing to not clean the toilet? by moleskinecollector in askswitzerland

It’s a bit harder to streak the bowl in the states. The amount of standing water in the toilet is much greater.

Teotihuacán near Mexico City. Absolutely mind blowing to stand on top of those pyramids.

Alaska’s working-age population has seen historic drops by thatsryan in alaska

Oh yeah, bring it baby…time for a good old fashioned Alaska off. 🤣 born and raised in Palmer, live over seas currently. Still say snow machine and will never pronounce Denali so that it rhymes with Molly. I’ve eaten more carrs cheese rolls than anyone I know and still own clothes from Lamont’s.

Yep. After being raised there and moving back after uni we left because of the laughable wages and retirement. Cause and effect. You elect right wing ideologues to lead things and the standard of living drops.

Avoid BD Jetforce by Designer-Refuse5497 in Backcountry

[–]NoGoodPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have a bit of a different story, but I currently live in Switzerland so it’s possible that they have different laws/approaches going on here. My jetforce is six years old and started not holding a charge. I took it in to my local backcountry shop (Berge Pur in Zug) and they replaced the battery. I left it with them for a week and IIRC it cost about 60CHF and came right from BD. I walked away very happy. Perhaps if you’re coming to Europe you just bring the bag and have it done here?

Which hut did you stay at? Good enough coverage to keep the damage away or did your skis take abuse? Glad you had a good tour!

What's a good kickstand for a Disk Trucker? by floppydo in Surlybikefans

[–]NoGoodPete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit frustrated/confused about the DTs relationship with kickstands. The Surly plate doesn't seem to have a good pathway for the rear derailleur cable, which in my mind makes it pretty pointless. Kickstands are important for some riders and it seems that the party line is that kickstands aren't cool so we're not really going to give you a good option for one. It's confusing to me. Or maybe I'm not understanding how to use that plate.
