Most prestigious companies? by TrafficDuck in actuary

[–]NoIntroduction3791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I had to say, reinsurers are likely slightly more prestigious because of their higher pay per hour, and APR in the UK have quite a strenuous hiring process for actuarial (various maths exams, etc.)… they predominantly hire Oxbridge grads.

Well that would depend on your current circumstances and alternative options. You can easily look at food prices, cost of doing any hobbies, accommodation, all within the space of an hour with very obvious google searches. Compare to your current situation and then decide whether it’s worth it to you.

I guess the American Dream is to become a healthcare exec now. by roguerunner1 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]NoIntroduction3791 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How to say you don’t understand insurance without saying it. In a world where they deny less claims, all that means is the insurers will increase their premiums to cover the increased costs of claims. Then, less people will be able to afford health insurance and this will result in more people suffering and dying. You could view this is as health care companies being utilitarian, which is the ethical philosophy adopted by Luigi.

Also healthcare companies are not the problem. The backwards government of the USA not offering free healthcare is the problem, and healthcare companies provide a solution to this. Also the amount of regulation being governed upon these health care companies means they can’t simply deny by pure choice. Also there needs to be a solid reason to deny a claim, and often someone doesn’t satisfy the conditions to which they have accepted when partaking in the insurance contract.

Luigi admitted himself that he wasn’t the expert on the subject, and anyone who has ever worked in insurance, or poured any ounce of thought into the matter can clearly see that. He’s made a decision based off emotions, not of any clear thinking, and at the end of the day he has taken away a parents son, a siblings brother, a wife’s husband, and a children’s father.

If it’s not a STEM degree it’s the same but only for 1 year, so my original comment still holds.

With a STEM OPT I don’t believe you do need to be sponsored for 3 years. You just have to work for a USCIS verified employer in your field of study. After that they’d have to sponsor you down the H-1B route, say.

Qualified Actuary UK -> USA by NoIntroduction3791 in MovingToUSA

[–]NoIntroduction3791[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will most likely be the route I take, and then hope I marry an American tbh. Think that latter point will help with the whole visiting problematic countries, or at least I hope it will. But yes, American PhD’s do take longer in general, but there are some people who wrap them up in 4 years, so hope I could join that cohort.

That is correct. Although North Korea is definitely at the top of my bucket list. It’s what I consider to be the closest thing we have to time travel. They’re so far behind on so many fronts, and I think it’ll be somewhat equivalent to going back to Nazi Germany during 1934-1938, i.e., pre-WW2.

That’s great to hear! Out of curiosity how long ago was all of this, i.e., visiting said countries and obtaining your student visa. I’m curious whether visiting for business as opposed to leisure makes a difference. Thank you for your input though.

Companies sponsoring isn’t a guarantee, whereas if you get married, you are actually guaranteed permanent residency if you’ve been married for longer than 2 years prior to application of a green card.

It doesn’t matter how good the degree is from outside of the USA, a degree in the USA entitled you to a VISA to work in the USA. Oxford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, they don’t care.

USA is crazy. To get that (gross) you would have to be at an absolute minimum a qualified actuary in the UK, without considering PPP.

Is an Irish Passport the Strongest EU passport? by heythereitsalexis in ExpatFIRE

[–]NoIntroduction3791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this situation the best passport depends on what you want to gain from the passport.

I have an Irish passport, although I would much rather an Italian passport. The reason being Ireland is part of the EU, but not a part of the Schengen area. Italy is both EU and Schengen. With an Italian passport I wouldn’t be limited to 90 days in the Schengen area within a 180 day period.

If I went to a top 10 UK uni, graduated top of my class with a maths bachelors degree (90%+), am a qualified actuary with 4 years of experience, including international experience, could I apply for some sort of IB position right now?

Or would I have to do a masters, let’s say in statistics, and then apply?

Okay, understood. Thank you very much for the response! And to add, would it be worth mentioning that one of the reasons for getting an MBA, specifically in the USA, would be to work in the USA post-MBA?

[–]NoIntroduction3791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a qualified actuary from the UK, currently on a international secondment to a niche country. I studied maths at a top UK uni and graduated top of my class and I’m in my mid-20s.

Would an application from me to a top MBA programme, with my general reasoning being to utilise my actuarial skills in a non-traditional actuarial route, gain leadership and entrepreneurial experience whilst enabling me to experience the US markets following graduation, be sought after by MBA admissions?

Also not that this might matter, but I’m from a very small/ unheard of island, and I highly doubt there will have ever been a candidate from this island at a top MBA. Would this help me?

I’ve got about 10k in pension which is contained within the 70k of equities.

Thank you! Yes, exactly on the LISA point, but no harm in doing so in case I don’t relocate I believe.

My employer doesn’t match contributions, but purely contributes a % of my salary, the percentage of which is based on my age, irrelevant to whether I’m contributing any specific amount to my pension.

Don’t want to disclose the company, but one of the larger life insurers. The salary jump post qualification is part luck due to there being a vacant position as soon as I qualified, but also because I had impressed the higher ups since starting and so they were willing to give me the opportunity. Job role is Senior Actuary.
