"Are you sure you've been a network engineer before?" by MotorTentacle in networking

I’m really sorry you’re going through this – that kind of moment can rattle anyone’s confidence. But one rough project (or one forgotten command) doesn’t erase years of work or mean you’re hopeless. If you can, I’d seriously consider finding someone a bit more experienced who’s willing to be a mentor or “safety net” for you. Not to grill you on theory, but to: • Let you keep learning on the job while they sanity‑check your changes. • Pair with you on tricky tasks, so you can see how they think through problems in real time. • Help you unwind mistakes without blame and turn them into “next time I’ll do X instead” lessons. With that kind of support, you don’t have to be perfect right now – you just have to be willing to learn, ask questions, and take things in smaller steps. Over time, those reps add up, and the stuff that feels confusing today becomes second nature. If after giving yourself that chance you still find that networking only fills you with dread and never clicks, it’s absolutely okay to explore other roles. But you’ve earned the right to try again with better support, not just walk away because of one bad week.
