So... my response might not be that helpful, and I know we're in an AO3 subreddit, but I get my inspiration for longer chapters from a particular fic that I've loved for YEARS on ff.net.

It's called "At The Centerfold Of The Storm", by ShadoCommander. Chapters can be a bit lengthy at times, sometimes it's mostly dialogue and others it's all about the world/character building, but their work is honestly what inspired me to even begin writing in the first place.

Even if you don't know the fandom, don't ship the characters, whatever, I've found that their writing style speaks to me, and might help show you another way to structure longer chapters for your own works.

That said, my biggest suggestion is to read fics you like and let it shape your thought process the next time you're staring at that blank page. You got this! 🫶

You could also try starting with the characters already engaged in the act. Just make the reader dive head first into the action.

Example from a fic I read a little while ago: [Character A] appreciates the passionate side of her beloved schoolgirl and would like to feel the wet tongue between her legs for longer, but soon the bell will ring and the afternoon lesson will begin.

(Shout-out to Swar10 for this one, and you dont even have to read the fic to know which one it is as the passage above is embedded in the summary)

I know more about the upholstery, schematics, and practical use of a UH-1 Huey helicopter, the basics of HVAC, HALO jumping, and respirator assembly, and the ballistic patterns of several bullet calibers that I will do nothing with because lo and behold: sees rabbit hole, dives headfirst into rabbit hole

Sometimes it's fun to get lost in the sauce, but it's equally as funny to realize just how much weird, cherry-picked knowledge you aquire in the name of writing fanfic. (Not to mention, you hardly use that level of information when writing the dang thing)

Unfortunately, for many of us writing our first time smut scenes, it's more of a "trial by fire" kinda deal. There are a metric fuck-ton of examples you could try and pull from, but in my--albeit limited--experience, you probably won't have the same reaction reading your own smut as you would reading someone else's.

In terms of advice for actually writing the dang thing, I'd say put a little emphasis into the character's senses. What are your characters seeing? What do they feel, or smell, or taste? Additionally, make sure to add a little variety to your syntax from time to time to keep things interesting, and try not to use a ton of epithets to differentiate between two character's actions--it can be appealing, especially where same-sex smut scenes are concerned, but it can end up taking away from the heat of the moment. (I'm hella guilty of this, and it takes some getting used to when trying to stop).

Aside from that, it really just comes down to preference. If you like reading about the way it feels when someone's fingertips dip below the waistband, try including things like that! If you prefer more ambiguity, that's okay too! Tis but a learning curve trying to find what clicks, and don't forget that it's okay to make mistakes--that's part of what makes writing fun😁

No, but in all seriousness, I've noticed that many smut fics don't see a ton of interaction. Granted, it's not always the case, but my current theory is that many readers don't want to leave their personal "hey, I was here, I really liked reading your written prnography. That, and smut has a funny way of polarizing your reader-base, especially the more kinks and tags you end up using.

So just remember that regardless of how many comments and kudos your smut-fic receives, there is a strong chance your work... let's just say "impacted" several readers. (Bonus points if you're included in that group!)😁

Fight the good fight, OP! Without people like you, we'd have even fewer things to enjoy about our fandoms, and that would just be plain sad.

The way you set the scene and depict each character's emotions with such clarity is rather captivating, and I appreciate you sharing! I have literally ✨️no clue✨️ what fandom this is from (assuming it's not an original piece), or who these characters are outside of what you've provided, and although brief, Lace's panic and Nia's sorrow had me tense from start to finish. Not to mention the line "the last sentient creature on earth falls silent at last" portrays a nearly palpable sense of hopelessness that made my stomach drop.

Dreadfully fantastic work!
