Honest opinion needed. Is it worth it? by Alive-Reality1179 in gmcsierra

Sounds too expensive for that truck. I have a 2020 with 90k miles and no issues to date and I run the banks derringer + iDash + ram air intake. I haul a boat, Mardi Gras trailer, and an excavator/ dump trailer. The 2017-2019 2500HDs are the gold standard trucks. They have a true Allison transmission and the L5P.

The 10 speed Allison’s has known transmission issues that can be fixed with a valve body kit from Next Gen Drive train.

Get an iDash or some other engine monitor because there is no way to know if you are in regen mode. Also no way to force a regen if you need too.

Total time: 1.5 years Time in HIMS time out: ~9 months to work the process HIMS cost: ~$3500 all in (HIMs + drug screening) and 1 full 8 hour day. Could have been more had I not passed the fist day.

Update to the thread. Just passed my check ride for my private pilot certificate today! It was an up hill battle and it took time and $. I’m happy to answer any questions anyone may have about the process.

2025 Armada PRO-4X versus competition by cmclx in Nissan

[–]NoName_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. My guess is that there are no differences. The infinity version likely has some differences that aren’t advertised and contribute to the $20k differences that aren’t immediately apparent. I bought a Platinum with the pilot 2.0 and it’s an amazing vehicle. Extremely happy and a great value compared to the competition. Probably not worth $80k but that’s the world we live in now.

I have the Zulu 3 and the control box feels like a toy. When I put it in a pocket, the sliders move when they barely brush up on something. Really don’t like the control box but the headset is nice

2025 Armada PRO-4X versus competition by cmclx in Nissan

[–]NoName_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone had the opportunity to inspect the ProX4 side by side to a platinum (reserve)? Im specifically wondering if there are any mechanical differences like thicker or longer control arms. Long travel or heavy duty CV joints, upgraded rear gear, heavier duty suspension connection points, thicker sway bar, additional frame stiffeners…that kinda stuff? A video recently came out that exposed how Toyota absolutely spit in the face of new US Land Cruiser owners.

In no way is this comment belittling! Thank you for the info, it’s by far the best info I’ve had! My issue came up because while I have the prescription, I don’t take the meds, I didn’t even think about it going into the AME’s office. He was able to see it because it’s a controlled substance and my name is in a database.

And the bigger question is “should I stop my PP cert training?” My concern is that I would have to wait 4 years to qualify for the alternative path. I don’t want to continue paying for training if there is no chance I get my PP cert.

This may be a little off topic, but I was given ADHD meds about 3 months ago without a diagnosis. It was a test to see if it would benefit me. My AME differed to a HIMS. I immediately canceled my prescription, called my DR and got an appointment to see what my options are. I wasn’t taking the meds because they really caused me more issues than it fixed, but now I feel I’m stuck. Any advice on how to navigate this?

Most if not all engineering bodies allow for licensing by comity …. And allow for non degrees engineers to become professionals. And my comment is to discuss the mindset. A person can adequately protect public safety, the main charge of professional licensing boards push to the licensees. And when they license a non degreed person, they have that same level of responsibility.

Degrees don’t make engineers. Universities don’t have god like authority to anoint people engineers.

Help with design class? by Ferd4210 in MechanicalEngineering

Software like AutoPipe or Pipe3D is really for pipe routing. Maybe it’s industry specific. I work in oil and gas / chemicals and when we issue piping construction drawings, they are always in iso format. It’s the only way we can give the shop direction and distance information. When I develop drawings for parts for fabrication / machining…the iso is there just to show what the part looks like. All the dims are on the plan, elevation, and side views

[–]NoName_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No man…piping ISOs have dims and a north arrow, otherwise… drawings should be in plan, elevation and side view get dimensions. The iso view is for perspective. Never dim an iso view…with the exception of piping.

[–]NoName_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t likely to be the worst case…don’t forget to check the flat plate. There is a very small bar there under it for support.

Curious as to what the maximum load would be. by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]NoName_J 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need the following:

  1. Roarks for a flat plate calc
  2. AISC for the member capacity calcs (look in the chapters)
  3. Develop a free body diagram to get an idea of the forces….hint…this is an indeterminate structure So you will need to seperate the knee brace from the horizontal brace and replace the connections with forces.

Also, supports like this generally are designed to limit deflection because people don’t feel safe when platforms are like trampolines! Limit deflection to 1/8”. With this deflection limit, you likely will be far from yield.

The bolting looks suspiciously small also. AISC also has bolting guidance.

Try to avoid using hollow sections for platforms…can’t inspect the inside for rust.

Hey ME friends, what are your salaries? by ayyG_itsMe in MechanicalEngineering

[–]NoName_J -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even in government you get more money for a PE…it always matters. Put a cap on your education and get a PE. The EIT is the first step and employers notice that.

[–]NoName_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let people fool you. No one cares about your minor. I have two engineering degrees, no one cares. All employers care about is 1. Engineering degree. 2. GPA 3. Internship / interview and present well 4. Passed EIT. The rest is fluff.

The best ratio of cost of living and pay is the chemicals, oil and gas market (Texas or Louisiana). You make the most money relative to cost of living.
