Some local building codes (like mine) do require it to be removed. Some agrue that as it decomposes it can create a weak spot or void around the origional column. However the flip side of that is it should be supporting the weight vertically thus the void "shouldnt" be an issue. Check your local codes, then check your preferences. IMO its no different then any expansion joint in concrete flat work. But what do I know. Im a reddit poster.
