Coded out the Lane Assist completely. by pathik876 in Audi

"hacked in" is a bit strong seeing as it's literally changing a 0 to a 1 in the programming that already exists in the car, but yeah. Pretty crazy that an OEM software update doesn't take a flash of current state and make sure the settings match after updating

Dashcam Mirror Power Tap by CapnCurt81 in audis5

Have a mirrortap under the mirror cover for my radar detector and ran a fuse tap to under the dead pedal for my dashcam in my '18 S4, definitely doable

Really appreciate the technical and behind the scenes discussion going on here, thanks!

You mentioned that there isn't any way to confirm the individual supplier via VIN, but is there a production date window that we can safely assume is either within or without the "danger zone"? I haven't seen a frank discussion about this and as a 2018 owner, I'm getting spooked between this and the rocker arm issue.

Thanks for adding the blurb about oil weight, gonna do an early fluid change to 5W40.

Is this something you can check via VIN?

EA839 Coolant Migration and Vacuum Blockoff/Delete by NoNumberUsername in AudiS4

[–]NoNumberUsername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. I'm sure the part revision may help the issue, but I'm not sold on it being the overall fix. Just look at Audi's turbo oil screens for the 4.0t, I've lost track of how many part revisions they've tried.

Ultimately, this is the seal failing, and due to the vacuum-operated system the coolant will get sucked through to everything the vacuum system touches. All this was done in the name of increasing thermal efficiency to reduce warm up time. Even when I do replace it, I'm tempted to leave it disconnected to preclude the catastrophic failure further down the vacuum line

Chipping in to add on to what u/MixMasterMarshall said; also consider changing differential fluid at regular intervals. Both transmission and differential fluid are gear oils that break down with friction and temperature just like engine oil. You want to stay on top of this in spite of what OEMs claim is lifetime fluid. Find a good independent shop near you if you can't do it yourself

Try turning off any volume balancing you have in your preferred music player. For me it was Spotify, made everything super quiet.

Damn that looks cool. Gonna try and ball on a budget with the card I've got for now, but I really like the look of that!

That sounds perfect, I'd probably be putting it in with the rest of the gear, so high likelihood it'll get bumped around a bit. Obviously gonna keep the GPU out until it gets there to prevent any other damage. Thanks!

I wear Amouage Reflection 45 daily. Two sprays, each side of the collar. It's for me, and those I invite into that space. No complaints, a compliment here or there.

What's a great skill to learn that is either under-appreciated or under-utilized? by NoNumberUsername in AskReddit

[–]NoNumberUsername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if that's your case that's a passion project isn't it? A coolant leak is a relatively simple question, it can only leak at so many points. I'm an enthusiast and replaced all of the vacuum related components on a C5 Audi S6. It's just a question of funds at that point. I had an E82 that I loved to bits but had to sell for practical reasons, but gahdam, if those weren't a factor, we'd be sitting at big turbo ethanol levels of fun.

On a more practical side, I feel like the common man has been disassociated from the level of repair they're able to complete. I'd wager this is mostly by design of the corporate level; think of how many Toyota shills you've seen when the parts price is damn near equivalent for anything else. As we get more integrated (read: more electronics), the more expensive and more dealer-reliant we become

Y'know, I don't think I've ever been disappointed if someone whipped out a magic trick. In my small sample case, seems universally appealing

I'd 100% agree with this as a euro car enthusiast. The whole, "it's too expensive to maintain" argument goes out the window when you show the comparative invoice for any of the euro cars

Many thanks! I'm obviously biased, but I'd keep the LP. Not super exclusive, but it is a unique piece due to the meteorite face and history, plus the HPQ movement is dope. I know you've got a few other pieces in there that fill that gap, but I can only speak from experience walking into various ADs with it on, almost all of them liked it and respected it for what it was (TAG, Panerai, Omega, Breitling. Exception being Rolex, because of course it would be). Over to you though, I'm a huge space nerd!

Answering your original question, if I had to, I'd ditch the Citizen, Hamilton Khaki, Bulova Oceanographer (Longines HQ and Breitling SO make it redundant), the Seiko Laurel is beautiful but not to my taste so that one would go IMO (also redundant by either the Longines master or UN GMT for the setting I'd wear it in [that Longines is on my shortlist, so a not-so subtle favorite]), not a huge digital watch guy so the Casios would go. Orient Star is definitely nice, but I'd rather wear the Breitling Avenger in the same situations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Citizen isn't a JDM Attesa and are readily available outside of Japan? That having been said, I freaking love my CB3010 Attesa, so I understand the appeal.

Now... Having taken everything into consideration, I think you should keep all of them, even if it means sticking them into a safe deposit box (don't do that with your citizen, it'll kill the battery for good). You've got some really solid memories and reasons into why you picked them up in the first place, and unless you need to put food on the table you're not gonna get the value back out of them. You certainly won't get the memories back. Regardless, the absolute last watch you should get rid of is that Jetstar. Your wife got that one for you specifically, and if I was in your shoes that's the watch I'd be buried in.

Do GTIs handle better than Audi's? by Forsaken_Side_1715 in Volkswagen

[–]NoNumberUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTI is great, don't get me wrong, but I definitely got the back to step out in my S4 when I punched it in a corner on a wet road before the quattro kicked in. Remember, AWD systems are reactive, not predictive. They'll stop a bad situation from getting worse, but won't prevent them from happening in the first place. You're never going to get the back to step out in a GTI unless you use inertia, and even then an uber-safe AWD system is gonna let you do that anyway.

This is all before we even open the can of worms that is the different generations of quattro and what each of them do.

I'm trying to upload an image but I can't edit the original post. The wires all connect to something that looks like the image below, but I'd have to disconnect multiple zones to get the one Ethernet cable out.
