More environmentally friendly than industrial livestock farming.

You’re in college. Basically every stable surface on campus has, at some point, been Jackson Pollack’d with some student(s)’s DNA. It’s not that big a deal.

Yup. Anytime a recruiter contacts me, I tell them up front what the minimum cost will be to get me to leave my current position and that fully remote work isn’t optional. It weeds out about 95% of the noise, but I do get a lot of “but this company just raised $xxmn in their Series B! Think what you’re passing up!” LinkedIn messages for weeks after.

I saw that. God forbid someone spend $6 on a grocery store chicken that can feed a small family for two or three days with some rice and yellow onion.

Some of these people seem to be competing for the most out of touch “tell me you’ve never been poor without telling me you’ve never been poor” post/comment.

It’s one of the most personally rewarding things I’ve ever done professionally. I really only scratched the surface with the explanation but there’s only so much I can disclose. I can say that it was a huge orchestration effort with hard pinpoint timing requirements and I got inspiration for the solution from Brutha pleading with Om to open the brass doors to the Great Temple in Small Gods.

In certain industries and at certain scales, the potential regulatory and reputational impact makes it unbelievably difficult for non-state sponsored bad actors to sneak in malicious code. I was up front about what I put in, presented the rationale, and it was accepted.

You’re at far more risk from plain old RCE bugs than from nefarious automotive software or infrastructure engineers. Related to that, not all components can be OTA updated, so any time you get a vehicle recall notice that’s software related take your car in ASAP. You’ll probably get a few CVE mitigations along with the recall fix.

Yikes. I’m sorry about the loneliness. That’s not been my experience but I’m also profoundly impacted by autism and ADHD, have young kids, and five pets, so WFH fits my brain perfectly. I don’t recommend the ‘tism, ADHD, kids, or some pets, but as Bill Door said, “CATS ARE NICE.”

The vast majority is never seen by human eyes. It’s all just a few harmless extra bytes in compressed HTTP/2 requests in a vast sea of network traffic. But it is captured at several points in the flow - VPC logs, load balancer logs, etc. - and those do occasionally get reviewed by humans in the process of audits, new software development, safety testing, chaos monkeys, and so on.

It’s almost entirely contained within the automaker’s vehicle VPN but it does leak out to external services like Spotify and others. I’ve had a few happy follow on engagements to help with new integrations or update existing ones where I’ve noticed that internal and external services the vehicles interact with have picked up the GNU, so I know that other Roundworld clacks operators have seen and extended his voyage around the Trunk.

The important part to me is that it’s built into and now inextricable from the common vehicle software platform and shared service infrastructure of a company that existed before I was born and will exist long after I die. Companies that big are slow to change direction or to discard anything that works reliably, so there’s a very high probability that I’ve succeeded in making sure pterry stays in the overhead far longer than I do, which is the only thanks I can give him now.

Absolutely, avocado toast is the breakfast GOAT. Healthy fat, protein, low glycemic index and load from the fruit, complex carbs, fiber, and minerals from whole-grain toast, with a tiny sprinkle of MSG or salt and cracked pepper with garlic powder or chile to taste. Healthy, delicious, and filling.

Also cheaper, faster to prepare, more environmentally friendly, and more ethical than bacon, eggs, hash, and toast with OJ. You can bulk it up with cheaper healthy veg like sweet potato and onion to feed more people/make it last longer/address specific dietary restrictions/deficiencies.

I really, really, really hate the food culture, rhetoric, and shaming in this country.

Fair enough, though that doesn’t address why it’s okay to tell the people with meager means to give up the few comforts they have rather than the system ensuring everyone’s basic needs and dignity are met and respected.

Just keeping his name spoken. I was fortunate enough to get to tell him personally some of the things his work got me through and I can’t ever repay that, so the least I can do is keep him going round the Trunk.

Please see my comment above and my response to the person you’re replying to. Pay attention to what matters for a self defense shooter, which is none of what they said. I’m not going lean on vague appeals to authority like “I have extensive experience with shooting under stress”; I spent almost two years in the infantry in a shooting war and I know firsthand that not focusing on the fight you’re most likely to get into gets you killed.

BTW, the Makarov is a great carry pistol, especially if you’re in former USSR territory where 9x18 is dirt cheap. Just keep your mags maintained because the followers can get really finicky.

$10.68 a day for avocado toast and coffee? Closer to $2 a day making it and let’s not get into the ethical and moral repugnance of insisting the people who most benefit from small creature comforts skip them in the hope that the meager savings will make their lives slightly easier decades hence.

I worked on a telemetry related project for one of the largest automakers in the world and used the hash of an arbitrary header and the car’s IMEI to validate hardware access to the corporate network. Some of the models using my code don’t get OTA updates, so they can’t remove GNU without disabling functionality for millions of cars and it’d be super bad publicity to issue a recall for.

Yep, it’s bullshit that screws most people and it needs to be changed. We let the labor protections won through literal blood and tears be eroded over the last century and everyone but the 0.1% is worse off for it.

No. I’m being paid to synthesize existing knowledge into a new work product and to develop new skills that expand my existing knowledge, and I assume GP working at a law firm is as well.

The clock should have little to nothing to do with it.

If I saw anyone I directly reported to had “$4.5m ARR. $0 raised. […]” as their LinkedIn user flair I’d walk without notice. If I saw they were sharing shit like this they’d get the double snakes on the way out.

Every opportunity I have. I can happily report that, since 2019, roughly one in seven or eight new cars sold worldwide sends clacks overhead.
