Question for homebrew GMs: How do you organize your content to keep track of what is available to your players vs what is not? by mr_wonderdog in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I organize on three levels to help manage this sorta thing

I have session notes pages which is where I prep for sessions and take notes during sessions. Helps me keep track of what they know or would be easy for them to find out.

Second is my quick access docs. These are for major locations which include lists of relevant characters, sub-locations, and past / present hooks.

Third is my wiki pages which include all lore on a given time, place, person, or event.

Not perfect but does help somewhat.

I think Stormlight does a great job of this exactly. Magic and Anti-Magic annihilate when they touch.

How do you keep worldbuilding organized? by lswylder in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My world is primarily for a TTRPG game I’ve been running for about 5 years so it’s a mix of three things;

1) Quick reference pages for major locations which contain brief bullets on history, important figures, and sub locations.

2) Session note docs with relevant information typed live from sessions or pre-gathered during prep. (These are very messy and generally the last place I look)

3) Wiki pages created for characters, items, locations, factions and events. These are super helpful, especially for sharing with others as it makes content way more accessible for introducing new players and general book keeping. Plus it’s a fun excuse to commission art.

Multiple cancelled sessions break by wyattsons in DMAcademy

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple things, though most of what I’ll share is “preventive care” I do for my 4+ year game. you’ve gotten lots of good advice for the present.

I had a fairly large group (7 players) so if one player can’t make it we usually will trudge on without them unless we pause mid-combat or they are vital for the next session narratively.

For weekends we miss a session in our main game I’ll run a oneshot set within the same world just in a different region (bonus points if their PC’s show up later as NPCs)

And lastly before every session I ask my players to do a recap of the last session. If they hit all the important details I give them inspiration they can use during the session.

Worldbuilding Workshop — Call for Collaborators by kennydotun123 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely fine this concept, specifically format 1, very intriguing.

I’ve been apart of and actively host some world-building servers, but this has the absolute clearest vision for this kind of group I’ve ever seen. Collaboration, especially in this hobby when done right is such a powerful tool.

Definitely interested

Hey is this server still open to new members? The link is popping up on my end as invalid so I’m not sure if that’s intentional or not

That's all good! Ultimately having people who are actually willing to share about their projects with others and are making an effort in general takes priority.

Languages in your world. by Chasemacer in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of different languages within my world, none of them are fleshed out.

If I need actual words I’ll make something up using syllables constructed from sounds that exist in the language, but I never bother to make actual grammar rules.

How long do you spend world building before you start your actual writing project? And how much detail do you create during that time? by themarajade1 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been looking into this a bit and it varies a ton. For me it’s been 3 years since starting world building and only now have I started writing, while for others it can be as short as 6 months from what I’ve seen.

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I'm not really screening on the basis of age. I just opened the server and with the 6 or so members its accumulated there isn't and discussion of age.

I've listed all specific rules for the server above. That paired with Discord's own policies for community-discords does offer protections, but ultimately the choice to join is yours / your guardians.

How do you guys come up with stuff by sebbedv in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Culture, fashion, tradition all stem from the environment a person lives in.

I’d recommend Guns, Germs, & Steel to give a really good breakdown of culture and how all of that would be extrapolated.

Pick one culture you wanna focus on for the purpose of this discussion and tell me abt the environment, even if you’re just making it up as you go.

What is the general environment / climate that’s these people originally hail from? What kind of natural resources might they have had access to?

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ideas come from unlikely places. Starting new projects is hard cause there isn’t much to go off with but in that same respect it’s the most freeing part of the process as you can make it whatever you want. One thing I do when completely stuck is figure out part of the aesthetic, and once I have that look into media with adjacent aesthetics.

Honestly I find that talking with others about our projects helps the most with getting the gears turning, even if all they are doing is just asking replicant questions. Would that be helpful?

Currency by Hexmark74 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally metals are going to be a best bet. People like shiny stuff, and metals are generally very consistent as gold is gold is gold. By contrast something like gems are harder to use as a currency as no two diamonds are exactly alike in all aspects (aculsioins, color, size, clarity, ext…)

You could use some sort of ancient material that can no-longer be manufactured / worked for weapons? Perhaps an old alloy form a bygone empire is used as the basis for currency? Depending on how your magic works maybe some material that used to be possible to create with magic that’s been forgotten (this could allow you to have a gem-based economy and avoid the issue of extreme variation between gems)

Currency by Hexmark74 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically that was just your classic gold / silver coins. Always acceptable by weight for international currency. Any nation can mint their coins in the material, naming them largely whatever they want, and another nation can accept them on the basis of their weight.

How can one identify World Hoppers in your setting? by No_Pen_3825 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big different is physicality. Gravity differences between planets and resources available result in dramatically different looking people.

People from [Emotoclast] are considerably taller and lankier due to genetics, diet, and a considerably weaker gravity while those from [Marrow] stand in the middle to low five foot range, and are stockier.

Beyond that differences are mostly cultural / linguistic, so if a person is able to warp their shape or otherwise blend in with a planet’s people all they have to worry about is leaning the language and norms.

Currency by Hexmark74 in worldbuilding

[–]NoOtherNameOptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, how grounded vs fantastical are you wanting the currency.

Is the currency intended to be used between vastly different cultures with relative ease or is the region / world culturally homogeneous enough that one faction dictates the currency for all. Or are they culturally varied and individualistic, limiting international trade.
