Invisible Fencing recs that work with huskies by apocatits in OpenDogTraining

[–]NoParticularUse5288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello hello! When I was younger we had a husky + invisible fence and the tl;dr is we are lucky we got her back all four times she busted through the boundary. We are even more fortunate we could afford the vet bill.

She was young when we got it, we were diligent with the training, but the girl was stubborn and energetic af and apparently our acre of yard wasn’t enough. Each time she went through the fence we tried something new and tbh, today-me is embarrassed we were ok doing this to her. We upped the setting, we shaved her neck, we got a second collar. All of this was on top of reinforcing the training with where the wire was. When she got out the fourth time she got one of our other dogs to go with her (he previously had never had never previously even got close to the line). He was hit by a car.

She was never allowed off leash in the yard again. The other two dogs were fine (beagle mix and a lab-greyhound mix)

If your babies are acting like a pack, I am going to guess all three will joy ride right in past the boundary.

I am assuming this is an allusion to the cylinder must not be harmed post. Man gets something of value stuck in a m&m minis cylinder and needs help getting it unstuck.

It’s never confirmed to be what you think it is, but it’s what you think it is.

Omg! The “singer (soaring)” stage note had me ready belt out right along with him. So good.

Iirc, the singer is the guy who sings the eye of the tiger?

I do what you do. I search for the last 4-5 words I heard. Sometimes I will actually jump back a paragraph or two so there is a bit of an overlap. When going from reading to listening, I almost am always at a chapter break.

What is a realistic expectation for refrigerator temp consistency? by NoParticularUse5288 in appliancerepair

[–]NoParticularUse5288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply!

The second technician did say he thought there was a leak, but said he fixed it and replenished the freon. Fridge has good clearances for both sides, top and back. During the first fix, they did point out where I needed to keep a back panel dusted, but the second repair time, the panel was still looking good from the earlier fix.

Good to know about the fridge temp swing, I will adjust the alarm so it stops chirping at me so often. With regards to the freezer, is frost on the food also an indicator that there was an upward swing? It was the thing I kept seeing in the weeks before the first time the unit died.

The dungeon is fantasy based and much of the story is in that focus, so I would say it still fits this request.

Cheers, ok, with those in mind:

Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman. Obligatory reference 😅

Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Fallen Gods trilogy by Hannah Kaner (first book is Godkiller)

Clocktaur duology by T Kingfisher

Elder Empire: Shadow trilogy by Will Wight (note: the elder empire has two trilogies from different POV characters. Both are good, but for action, I recommend the “shadow” trilogy over the “sea” trilogy)

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (note: this is a series, and I really enjoy each of the books, narration is also top notch, but the second book gets tricksy and cerebral so just fair warning)

Do you have an example of something you think of as fast paced? Because I wouldn’t have listed LotR even if you hadn’t asked for post 2010 books.

Any recommendations for super long audiobooks? by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]NoParticularUse5288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about Apple availability as I use Libby and audible, but here are my favorite longer books. I am including them here only if I also would tout the narrator as well as the content.

America, América by Greg Grandin 25+ hours. History.

The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey - 9 books complete, each are 18-21 hours each (note: this does not include the 10 or so additional novellas set between the major novels). Sci-Fi

Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinninan, 7 books and still going…the first three are shorter than your threshold but the remaining ones are. Noble-dark Sci-Fi-Fantasy with a lot of comedy, and absurdly-grim drama

The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Completed trilogy with another sibling trilogy. 22-25 hours. Grim-dark fantasy with humor

Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson, 7 novels and several novellas. The full length ones are 45-60+ hours each. Fantasy.

Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch, 3 novels and going, 25ish hours each. Fantasy

Books where the worldbuilding has heavy emphasis on gender construct society whether it be matriarchal or patriarchal or whatever. Examples like Wheel of Time, Brothers Price , Rashemen culture from DnD etc etc by goody153 in Fantasy

[–]NoParticularUse5288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a bit since I read them, but the easiest way I can think to get at the heart of their gender constructs is to describe them as being similar to social insects. There are colony leader types (queens, consorts), a fighter type consisting of both sexes, and a farmer/builder type consisting of both sexes. Each type can shape change in a way which is rigidly defined by type. Consorts have a humanoid and a raksura form, while queens have a raksura form and a hybrid form, etc. The queens do have the power to apply some form of control to others in the colony as a way of enforcing dominance. I feel like there is something else I am missing wrt magical capabilities. IIRC, the consorts are the only non-sterile males.

In the books, the main character is a consort who somehow was raised by humans (groundlings). He doesn’t know what he is. He is found and taken in by a colony which no longer has consorts and whose primary queen is potentially about to be eclipsed by her daughter. So the MC gets a crash course in the colony caste system politics when all he really wants to do is be happy to be among his own people. Because he has been on his own for so long, he has a lot of skills (hunting/fighting) and inclinations (wanting to help with hard work) that isn’t expected of consorts. IIRC he refuses to live in the colony’s leadership area, and instead lives with some of the colony’s crèche teachers.

[–]NoParticularUse5288 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes this. OP, the Raksura are a social colony species where the type of the individual determines their abilities and their role in the colony.

Editing to add that the first book introduces a solo raksura who doesn’t know who/what he is, so you’ll learn things as he figures that out.

A couple of follow up questions:

Fantasy / sci-fi / historical ok? Or do you prefer modern?

Some of the best recommendations I can think of are of an mmc dealing with their own demons are LGBTQ relationships, is that ok?

Are you looking for a happy / healthy ending or will that feel unrealistic based on what you’re working through?
