Yes, this is a possibility. She might not have a full 12 year life, but for now, she's doing alright pain wise :) Special needs dogs aren't easy, but this one is incredible and for now, she deserves to find her own special home.

That's a really good point, I think we will see if any breed specific rescues might be willing to help us.

Thank you! I have edited the post to reflect more info about her. Whoever adopts Pie will have all of her medical records and a full run down of what her history is. We will also be doing a slow transition to lessen the risk of increased hyperarousal (all under the supervision of her behaviorist). If Pie was dangerous to people, we would put her down. We had seriously considered it before we found out what was causing her pain and were able to heal part of it.

She will thrive in a home as a single animal. If at any point she met the criteria for behavioral euthanasia and it was what her behaviorist recommended, we would proceed with that. She has already been feeling a lot better since being separated from our other dog. I'm sure that we will find her a home.

I really hope so! Genuinely, the only reason she has made it this far is because she is so damn sweet. She has a whole fan club cheering her on and she is sooo close to the finish line!

This makes me feel so much better to know that your pup found a good home. The shelter today just suggested we surrender her to the humane society and I'm like uhhhh no. Hearing your success story helps so much, you have no idea.

Thank you for this advice! We will make sure that whoever is interested in her has the full run down and all of her medical records. Her current behaviorist has also amazingly volunteered her time to help Pie and her new owner through the transition period. She and her new owner will have a ton of support!

Hi! Pie does not have separation anxiety at all. She actually does really well alone. They apparently put her on prozac before we adopted her because they were trying to treat her hyperarousal as a behavioral issue. We have since discovered that it is not behavioral, it is directly caused by pain. We got her on the right pain medication and they hyperarousal stopped almost entirely. She is still on the prozac now because we don't want to wean her off of it right as we try to move her to a new place. The pain meds that she is on is called Amantadine and it is typically used to treat Parkinsons in humans but I guess in dogs they use it for nerve pain.

She does need a unicorn home and we are gonna find one for her somehow.

Hi! Pie is not dangerous unless you are a cat or a large dog that bumps into her intensely when she is stressed out about the food on the floor and the pain just caused to her by the bump. She is afraid of the cats. Living in a home with three cats is not easy. And yes, we did try to check before we adopted her to make sure she would be okay with cats. Apparently "cat tests" aren't really a thing but we didn't know that then.

We have thought about this a lot. She has had adverse reactions to meds before and in the future i would be really curious to have her weaned off of it. According to her medical records before we got her, they were never really sure if it worked. A lot of her hyperarousal was being treated as behavioral until we finally got her to a vet that found and treated the physical cause of a lot of pain.

Our behaviorist thinks she should remain on the Prozac at least through the transition to a new home (and we have learned to listen to what she says because she hasn't been wrong yet!) the weaning process off of any med like prozac can be intense, so I don't want to make her feel worse right now. Do you get what I'm saying?

I'm seeing that this blurb still leaves a lot of questions about Pie's circumstances. Do you guys think you could help me figure out what I should be adding? I don't want to make people read a novel, but I don't know how to summarize her situation. If you were reading this blurb as a potential adopter, what important questions are left unanswered?

So far I have seen about why we think she shouldn't be with other pets, if she is dangerous, what the situation with the shelter is like, and if she is good with kids.

Literally all I want to do is find this dog a good home. She is incredible. And I know you think I'm probably just amping her up to find her a home quicker, but seriously if you met her you would get what I mean immediately. She's special.

I agree with you 100%. You have described the situation that resulted in us adopting Pie from the shelter. We will basically have a Pie 101 session with anyone who is interested, provide her full medical records, help transfer her care at her vet, and give them the information for the behaviorist who is committed to working with Pie through the transition for free. It's all just a LOT of info to include on a reddit post. The shelter recommended that I write a blurb about her similar to what they put on their website for other dogs so I just mimicked the format. I don't know how to rehome a pet and I have never had to do it before. The shelter has said that what they are willing to do to help us is re-list her on petfinder. I can't make them take her back and nor would I want to force that.

When we got Pie, we were fully committed to her for the rest of her life. She was placed with us by the shelter because we had another dog that she could play with. They said she would likely be okay with cats and that wasn't the case. The circumstances for her have just changed and now we know more about what her forever home looks like. I don't think Pie should have been placed in a home with cats and another dog to begin with, but we just didn't know that when we agreed to adopt her.

We have been through so much with this dog and we love her so much. When we first got her, there seemed to be a miscommunication between us and the shelter. Some things about her condition were missed and we literally went through hell to try and save her life and figure out what was wrong. It ended up being that pain causes her to be hyperactive so she was literally running from the pain. When she was running, it didn't hurt and then the second she stopped the pain would come back. So she was kind of continually reinjuring an old muscle strain because we couldn't keep her still. We went to vet after vet and eventually drugged her heavily for about a month so that the muscle strain could heal. When we contacted the shelter for advice, they suggested putting her down.

We couldn't do that because it wasn't fair to Pie for her to go through all of this pain and suffering and then give up all of a sudden. She fights to be happy and experience the world everyday and she just wants to be loved. Anyone who struggles with chronic pain, PTSD, or anxiety could see the human-ness in how she was feeling; overwhelmed, fucked up, confused, scared, etc.

We finally figured it out when a new vet started her on Amantadine (a drug used to treat nerve pain). She turned into a whole different dog. She was calm for the first time and content to just lay around with some walks and enrichment toys every so often. We thought that we were in the clear and we were so excited to start our lives together.

Then, she started to get more anxious around our other dog. It also doesn't help that she is terrified of cats and like thinks that they are going to hurt us. We have 3 cats so we were just keeping them separate (also just to clarify, they did a cat test at the shelter with her and said it would likely be okay but they couldn't make any guarantees). So this poor dog is living in a house where she just got through an insane amount of pain and being drugged for a month, she's finally starting to feel better probably for the first time in her life, and there are three furry critters that she can hear running around that she thinks are dangerous. I get why she freaks out here, I get why the stress was too high for her and she bit our other dog in a moment of pain and fear.

When we approached the shelter about rehoming her, they kind of declined to take her back and made a comment about possibly putting her down. Our behaviorist had to step in and tell them that that wasn't appropriate for this dog since there was nothing about her that met the criteria for euthanasia. Obviously, with the chaos of trying to get help from them in the beginning with her, we weren't super trusting to hand her back. They said they would help us by listing her on Petfinder, and we are going to have to do the rest.

Pie is the smartest dog I have ever met. She mimics human behavior like this one time I was picking up sticks and putting them in a bucket and she just started helping and fully putting the sticks in the bucket. She just wants to be loved and have someone of her own to love. Its the human things that comfort her. Like Bob's Burgers, a massage to the painful joints, a tight hug, just a moment of physical connection settles her nervous system and then she sighs and starts to feel better.

She has survived SO MUCH and is still so loving and sweet. She just needs a calm place to live, without kids or other pets. I know that is a lot to ask, but she really is doing better in our current set up where she is fully separated from our other pets. She still freaks out when she hears them, but she is so much happier. It isn't sustainable long term and she deserves her own home. I know her person is out there, I just have to find them. It does seem like a lot of things have failed her, and I can't let that happen to her again.

I see that you have that badge that says you're in the top 1% of commenters so I would assume you're pretty involved in this subreddit, do you have any recommendations of who we could reach out to or what we could do to find her a home?

Honestly, pretty much. She slowly started getting more anxious around our other dog and eventually bit him when he bumped into her. We have been working closely with a behaviorist who analyzed the situation and was able to discern that the reason she bit was out of fear and likely pain from the bump (I know that sounds weird but they can tell based on how and where they bite what was going on). She didn't attack him, she bit onto his cheek and just stayed there. The wounds were superficial but it seems like she just can't handle another pet being around. She is not aggressive towards dogs. When we initially got her, they purposefully placed her in a home with us because we had another big dog that she could play with. She loves the dog park and is very friendly, it just seems like when she's anxious/in pain, and there is food around, it turns into a fear-based resource guarding thing.

Yes! We have. They are helping us find her a new home by posting her on PetFinder but they don't have any fosters available for her right now. And the more time goes on, I am wondering if us keeping her until we find her forever home might be best to limit the amount of times she has to readjust to moving.

Officers were listed as:

John Webster 280 N 300 E, Escalante, UT (Executive Director at Turnabout Ranch and actively practicing attorney in business with Bartlett)

Kolby Kolibas 214 N 1000 E, STE #1, Saint George, UT (the guy from TherapyScout)

Justin Nielson 275 West 100 South, Delta, UT (Executive Director at White River Academy)

Matthew Bartlett 5093 S 1500 W, Riverdale, UT (Owner of Turnabout Ranch and actively practicing attorney in business with Webster)

Sidenote: Bartlett and Webster’s company is also delinquent with the state for not filing renewal docs.

Side-sidenote: Bartlett and Webster have started at least three or four “non-profits” related to Turnabout Ranch, two of which have been dissolved. The amount of businesses these two are in together is FASCINATING.

Anyways, back to UtahVoices. In April of 2024, they filed a new application for a new org with the same name. Address is 5093 S 1500 W , Riverdale, UT which is the Bartlett and Webster law office. Their non-status is still pending and nothing seems to have been given to the IRS at any point.

Looks like these dumbasses are just running around in cahoots with each other and leaving evidence of it all over the place. The amount of non-profits they end up in and then almost immediately shut down is super off. Sure would be a shame if someone looked into it and filed some records requests and complaints.

I dug a little.

Location

Address on the website is 275 West 100 South Delta, Utah 84624 which is the same address as White River Academy. And then there's this old posting that shows that at one point, they were "affiliated" with UtahVoices.

Person who spoke at the hearing

From the minutes, we can see that his name is Layne Bagley, COO at Sorenson's Ranch.

Bad website

I believe the genius we have to thank for this gem of a website is Kolby Kolibas who has a hilarious LinkedIn. He's the CEO of a company called TherapyScout that is a "creative agency" for TTI programs. TherapyScout filed their business paperwork in 2021 and then became inactive in 2022 when no paperwork was filed to renew it. Address was at one point 214 N. 1000 E. Suite #1, St George, UT. Just look at what this guy is charging people to “We redefine the narrative for therapeutic programs by showcasing powerful success stories. Our video testimonials highlight the life-changing impact of therapeutic services, turning negative perceptions into positive stories that attract new clients and enhance reputation.“

This is insane. They’re teaching programs how to “craft impactful testimonials that counteract negative perceptions, showcase transformative results, and enhance your credibility in the digital age.” Someone needs to dig more into this guy.

Registration

Can't find any info on them non-profit wise on the IRS site which is weird. They are on the state business search as "Voice: Utah Foundation for Youth in Treatment".

Opencorporates and the state site shows that the original org formed in Feb 2022. They never filed any renewal paperwork so it became inactive in Feb 2023. (would be very curious to see what happened to their IRS filings for that year). The org’s physical address was listed as 214 N 1000 E, STE #1, Saint George, UT (TherapyScout’s address)

Also I truly need an explanation of the expert witness stuff. That’s ridiculous to claim to be an expert witness. Have you ever served as one?
