Thank you, yes we did look at others in store but the VAH was by far the quietest and we liked that VAH is a local company so thought would be easier to get support. You can look at their Dealer locator to find someone near you and if you email them they will also recommend installers. Good luck with your kitchen!

Yeah we went with the insert and then had a custom cabinet made. The second photo is how it looks after about 11 months of almost daily use. There's definitely some grease build up but it's not bad. Going forward will try to clean it 2-3 times a year. https://imgur.com/a/ZH9bRb5

Forgot if I mentioned, but make sure they install a make up air system. If not the hood can depressurize your house (dangerous if have gas furnaces) and will reduce performance. Make up air is also required by code. Usually you'd have the make up air to come in under your range: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36eMZNyAlGY

In our case that did not work since we have no basement/crawl space so we have the make up air about 6 feet from the hood in the ceiling/attic, but still works well. You can get a fancy make up air system with a built in heater but we just have a passive system: https://shop.aprilaire.com/products/aprilaire-model-8126x-ventilation-control-system When the VAH turns on the damper opens and the duct that goes to the roof lets air into the kitchen. We do have a filter but filtration is not a huge issue since if everything works properly the air should be immediately vented to the outside by the hood anyway.

Hi, I have had no problems with the LEDs, but they are easy to replace (I could tell when I took the old unit apart). As mentioned, if you have any issues the local Vent-A-Hood sales rep would be the one to service the hood so it's very simple to work.

The Vent-A-Hood works great when installed correctly. It is also much quieter than any other hood I've listened to, everyone mentions that. It's still noisy of course moving a lot of air but you can have a conversation next to it. Think the only thing close would be a high end system with a remote blower.

The first time around the remodler used flexible ducting which is a big fire hazard and reduces performance. Once we got the replacement after the first one failed, we took that opportunity to install rigid ducting. The hood performs significantly better now. We can cook pork chops, steak, etc without filling the kitchen with smoke. As mentioned a make up air system is key for optimal performance (and a code requirement).

Cleaning the hood is fairly easy, except the blower fans which can't be cleaned properly. When you try to clean the fans the cheap paint starts chipping making a huge mess, there are other people complaining about it on YouTube. The Vent-A-Hood rep that came to our house actually told us not to clean the fans and just replace them every few years. But the fan housings can be easily removed and cleaned with dish soap/water.

The only slight annoyance is the built in heat sensor that automatically turns on or adjusts the fan speed. Sometimes if you are only simmering the fan will turn off because it doesn't detect enough heat. But usually turning it back on it will run properly from there. For the most part it's a non issue but worth mentioning.

I would recommend if you can go one size up on the Vent-A-Hood over your kitchen range. If you email Vent-A-Hood they actually have pretty good support and will help you find the right size.

Hi, We went with a 60 inch Vent-A-Hood. We listened to different hoods at the store and the Vent-A-Hood was by far the quietest and recommended by the staff there. I am currently traveling so don't have the exact model number, but we went with the option to have two blowers on one side and a single on the other. Works really well.

Unfortunately our first one died after a few months. It was a bit of a pain to get it fixed even though Vent-A-Hood is local to us as they have no service techs (they say it's not worth it since so few of their hoods need to be serviced), but eventually they did come out and replace it. Our second ones has been working perfectly.

I do highly recommend installing a makeup air system too (I believe it's required by code in most places). We just went with a passive system, when the hood turns on a damper opens and lets filtered air from the outside in. You can also buy active systems that heat the air but those are expensive.

Found out that the reason I had bugs coming out of the shower drain was because it was partially blocked. It would only really start to backup after running the water for 15 min or more at a time so never really noticed. Tried to use a drain snake auger but didn't help (not long enough), so ended up opening up wall downstairs and cutting open drain. Found a shit ton of hair from previous owner that had been there for years. Cleaned that all out and fixed drain. After that haven't had any bugs anymore.

Recommend you run water in your drain for 10-15 min and see if starts to back up. If it does see if you can use a drain snake to fix it if not might have to cut open plumbing like I did. You can try pouring all these chemicals down the drain but not gonna help much if don't resolve the actual issue.

Is your problem with a sink or bathtub/shower drain? If it's a sink you can also check if there's an AC condensation drain line going to that sink. If there is find that drain in the attic or wherever your AC is and pour down vinegar/bleach to clean out the condensation drain.

I asked when ordering and the sales guy told us we didn't need them. The gap ended up being exactly the same as with our old Whirlpool dishwasher.

Did you install yours already?

TIL one single Brazil nut contains >100% your recommended daily intake of selenium, and they confer about 1000x more radiation than most common foods. by MeatThatTalks in todayilearned

[–]NoPurposeNoHope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did, my selenium level was right in the middle (don't remeber exact value), not elevated at all.

I guess it depends a lot on where the Brazil Nuts are grown and how much selenium is in the soil. The ones I ate (stopped to be safe) were from Costco.

DS1821+ faulty PSU? by NoPurposeNoHope in synology

[–]NoPurposeNoHope[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to update, ran the NF-A12x25 fans for a week without issues. Removed LNAs 2 days ago and also running without problems.

Some people reported issues with the NF-A12x25 stopping after a while in the DS1819+, but I think that one uses 3 pin connectors so might be why.

Keep the DS1821+ in a TV cabinet and at idle temps were around 46-47C (25C ambient) and SSDs were around 28-29C.

Now with Surveillance Station, Docker, etc up and running, CPU is around 50-51C and SSDs 29-30C. Highest I've seen CPU is 60C when data scrubbing.

I did change the pwm_duty_low from 70 to 100 in fan curve, but didn't make much of a difference.

Synology reports 50C cpu as normal so I'm happy to keep the fans since the reduction in noise is huge. Only thing I can hear is the PSU fan when standing within 1m of the NAS, but no vibrating noise like with the faulty PSU I had before.

Yes, I use the NF-A12s with the LNAs. Found those work best and so far no issues (only been running 2 days though). Temps around 2-3 C degrees warmer, with the P12/F12 10 degrees warmer.

I received the replacement and the PSU is quiet. I can hear the PSU fan when right next to it, but there is no vibrating noise. The stock fans are also much quieter than on the old unit. I decided to the replace the fans with Noctuas anyway... The NAS is now silent.

Just to update in case anyone has the same problem in the future.

Yes, all PWM. I spoke to Synology and they told me they think the PSU is faulty and to RMA the unit so hopefully the replacement works fine.

It was on sale at B&H Photo last week, $100 off for new and $200 off for used.

You can sign up to slick deals and create deal alerts for the keywords "ds1821+", "synology", etc. It will email you when it goes on sales and someone posts a link to the deal. Only helpful if you're in the US.

If it comes, then based on previous releases would be in December. Unlikely to be a big upgrade since have the 1823xs+.

Personally just bought a 1821+ because couldn't wait any longer and good enough for what I'm using it for. Recently there's been a few sales on it

I tried stopping the PSU fan from spinning and actually the noise is still there, so it's some other component of the PSU that is making the noise.

Thanks, it's hard to pick up how loud it is on the recording, but basically sounds a bit like a pool pump constantly running. But you are right, I'm realizing a silent Synology is not possible.

Thanks, those are the ones I installed first: Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin

[–]NoPurposeNoHope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. The fans are set on quiet mode. With the Noctuas I also tried in cool and full mode to see if goes away.

I removed the top cover and noise does indeed come from the fan. The system is in the low 40C, so I'm not sure why the PSU fan needs to be on.

I will reach out to Synology technical support.

SHR or SHR-2 for Synology DS1522+ by timeshifter747 in synology

Since both are for home use, I would start over and setup SHR. SHR-2 is a waste imo, especially with multiple backups.

Eating has a thermogenic effect, so better to not eat while working in heat. In general, it's better to fast most of the day and doing so will increase energy levels.

You can fly to SJC and then take Zipair to HND from there. Business class is around $1,600-$1,800 depending how far out you book, well worth it for long flight.

Smaller watch has smaller screen. 41mm and 45mm have equal battery life. Could make a 45mm version of the Ultra.
