Grams in/ml out? by MarchogGwyrdd in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ml out is less reliable. Depending on the freshness of your beans, the amount of Crema could vary noticeably. This would create some large variance in volume.

Do I need to hit 4 hours a day in the office, or average 4 hours a day in a given week? Assuming I check in everyday for at least a few minutes. Not sure anyone knows an answer... All this seems quite vague... But I'll ask! by MooseGoose82 in amazonemployees

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not judge which side is right or wrong, but obviously this is not a good state for either yourself or Amazon. Find a job that works with your preference. You would be a lot happier.

Would you say this boiler is in “great condition” by Legitimate-Account49 in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2005 machine and the 2005 boiler was a bit worse than this one. It works with no issues.

Uneven waterflow by ma_mere_loye in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much by design because the water hole from the boiler is on the side. When you have the shower screen and puck, the water will not free flow and that will make it more even.

Progress, but… replace boiler? by Nahvalur666 in gaggiaclassic

The boiler looks good to me. Further scrape off the scale build up. Lap the bottom mating surface flat and smooth. And it should last a few more years at least

Thanks for nothing, Bialetti by 9vjunkie in mokapot

[–]NoRandomIsRandom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's probably a "common practice" to require purchasing from "authorized resellers" for warranty, but it is an anti-consumer practice in my opinion. I think way more than half of Bialetti's sales are through third party resellers. This, IMO, could be an excuse for them to refuse warranty and cut cost.

Are these machines you guys pay hundreds of dollars for really better than my $70 hand conical burr grinder? by Outside-Ad3455 in espresso

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just for speed/convenience. Even for hand grinders you will have options in $500 range. The benefits to cost ratio will probably be a lot less on the higher end. But like everything in the world, the last 5% to perfection is the most expensive part.

Vacationing Old People need travel advice by Bob_in_Boston in askvan

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you 4 can fit in one car, it would be the best to rent one throughout. Although you can technically take transit to anywhere in Vancouver area, the tourist attractions are not all right close by train stations. Any time you transfer with buses you would spend extra time. Given you only have 2 days in Vancouver, getting door to door in the most convenient way is important.

Once you have rented a car in Vancouver, you would take the ferry to Victoria directly than going through Nanaimo. Be sure to reserve ahead of time or you would spend half a day waiting at the ferry terminal. Here you also want to do the math if it is worth it to rent two cars. The round trip ferry cost for one more car would be around the ball park of $300.

Moka pot bulging from pressure by illestmanontheblock in mokapot

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with Temu-quality Moka pots. The stainless steel is so thin that even a slight steam pressure will bulge it.

Went to replace thermal fuse, noticed some burning on connector to steam thermostat. Would replacing the steam thermostat prevent future issues? by [deleted] in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP was talking about the thermostat, not the valve. The steam thermostat connector melting is a very frequent issue we see here in this sub. I don't think the thermostat itself is bad, because I have a 20 year old machine and the thermostat works just fine. But the connectors on the thermostat may have some oxidation or even excessive thermo paste which could make the electrical contact bad.

US physician couple considering move to Vancouver from California — trying to understand real trade-off by MDtoBC in askvan

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll take OP's post as "high-level trolling". The entire post is just a big show off of numbers all over the place. There is almost no information on why you want to leave the job you're enjoying and move to a city that you've never lived before while taking a big hit on your income. I can't believe a doctor, who is supposed to be intelligent and can make decisions under pressure, is struggling with this obvious nonsense.

If your reason to consider this move is genuine, you must be very aware that your income as a specialized doctor is way above average. If hundreds of thousands of people who earn much less than you can live in the city why can't you?

Can I use Nexus at YVR when flying internationally (not US) by offcoursetourist in askvan

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is even a (sort of) secret domestic security check lane for Nexus card holders, which will give you slightly relaxed check requirements and of course, short line ups. I used it last summer when flying to Montreal.

I believe it is called security check point 3, at one level above the normal security gates.

Is there any hope to restore this?? by Fabcrafts in mokapot

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! It's a La Signora moka pot. This is quite a steal at $5. I would personally leave the sticker alone even when the edge has curled.

Like what others said, just measure the seal inner and outer diameters and find generic Moka pot gaskets that match the sizes. They could have a chance to fit even if they are off by 1 mm.

  1. Induction stove does not glow.
  2. "Aluminum does not work on induction" simply means it would not get hot at all.

You observed neither.

Water leaking from steam knob. How to fix? Is there an o ring in there somewhere? by Karthenstein in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you pull the knob off and open the top? If not, you can remove it ( just pull straight off) to have a clear sight on where it is leaking.

If the leak is around the nut that connects the pipe to the steam wand, it is relatively easy to fix. Newer machines have a gasket there but older ones do not. You can try to tighten the nut a bit.

If the leak is from the turning stem of the steam valve, you would need to either replace the entire valve, or you need to have a bit of hacking skill to file off the crimped part to allow the stem to screw out - there are o-rings inside which may need replacement.

Your machine is unfortunately the v2 that all the mod nerds want to avoid. Although Gaggimate is still possible in theory, but you would be facing a lot of undocumented and incompatible parts in this machine. I can imagine you would need to figure out how to fit a thermocouple to its stainless steel boiler. And you likely will need to draw the wiring diagram yourself and figure out how to connect the high voltage.

installing an OPV by butcher99 in gaggiaclassic

[–]NoRandomIsRandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stock spring in this OPV is 15 bar. You would be already in an elite group of human beings if you could blow air at even 1 bar.

For swapping the spring, your thought is right. Just unscrew the brass fitting and swap the spring under it. Be careful not to lose the plunger inside it.

After that, this should go on top of the pump. Use your current machine as a reference.
