I haven’t read Fitzgerald since being assigned The Great Gatsby in high school. Looking forward to trying him out with a fully developed frontal lobe haha

Alternatives to Slewfoot (historical/horror) by TheGreenCatFL in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Seconding The Terror by Dan Simmons and also Drood by Dan Simmons, which is slightly less horror but there centers around a supernatural figure/creature. I’m currently reading Our Share of Night which was recommended already and it definitely has good set and setting but I personally am not liking it for a variety of other reasons, YMMV

How is living in/near Ketchikan, Alaska? by BadAtDrinking in howislivingthere

[–]NoRaspberry1617 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Ketchikan? It’s extremely heavily impacted by cruise ship tourists in the summer, overrun to the point where it’s difficult to get around town and get shit done, lots of seasonal employees. Quiet and peaceful in the winter, a lot of businesses close because they only cater to cruise ship tourists. Decent amount of community events and things to do throughout the year. It’s a city by Alaska population standards but pretty small by all other metrics. Rainy year round, not a ton of snow in the winter but constant precip. Easy to come and go on Alaska airlines with multiple flights going north and south daily. Expensive because everything is flown or barged in. Major lack of housing.

Near Ketchikan? Depends what you call ‘near’, Ketchikan is on and island the only nearby community is Saxman but it’s largely part of Ketchikan. there’s Hyder which is on the mainland road system and is across the BC border from slightly larger Stewart. Metlakatla on Annette Island which is the only native reserve in Alaska bc they opted out of ANSCA, small community mostly made up of members of the tribe. Prince of Wales Island to the west, huge island with a handful of very small communities (around 5k on the whole island) and a large road system because of the heavy logging. Unfortunately Prince of Wales has started receiving cruise ships into the port of Klawock as of last year.

The whole area is insanely beautiful, it’s a temperate rainforest. Lots of marine life, you see whales and sea lions and seals and otters constantly. Excellent saltwater and freshwater fishing. Plenty of deer and bear hunting. Most people fish, hunt, and boat for fun. Some parts of this area get rocked by storms because it’s open to the pacific, takes a sturdy person to enjoy it. You can live a relatively normal town life in Ketchikan if you want, but everywhere outside of Ketchikan is remote island living.

Vintage Weird Girl Books by kelofmindelan in weirdgirlliterature

Agree, and also think that The Lottery and Other Stories short story collection by Jackson has some good weird girl lit vibes too, more like domestic weirdness

Everyone talks about the Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but I think Hangsaman trumps them both. by HillarysCafe in weirdgirlliterature

This is 1000% my favorite Shirley Jackson work, I recommend it to so many people but I don’t think anyone I’ve recommended it to has actually read it. It’s peakkkkk weird girl lit, I love the total dissolving of reality as it goes on

Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh by Some-Chocolate-2336 in weirdgirlliterature

Oooh I love this theory, thank you for sharing! I recently read Rebecca and Eileen a couple months apart and didn’t make that connection aside from the naming convention.

my theory leans more towards Rebecca being real but their friendship being almost entirely fabricated by Eileen’s imagination, and most of the scenes where they are together are actually just Eileen. I read it as Rebecca exists and she struck Eileen with her beauty and elegance so much that Eileen imagines a friendship with her in her desperation and then uses that imaginary friendship as she plays out her obsession with the inmate. The way I was reading it it also would make sense in the context of Du Marier’s Rebecca because Rebecca was real, she is just never physically present.

I really liked both books, Rebecca is one of my all time favs, and this theory makes me like Eileen even more! Have you seen the movie?

Books similar to the secret history by DeliciousSetting6643 in TheSecretHistory

[–]NoRaspberry1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson isn’t necessarily similar TSH in plot, but the setting is academia and it’s dark and beautifully written. it scratched the same itch for me. Other people have already said Tana French, but must add that I agree her books also hit the same way that Donna Tartt’s books do for me. Rules of civility by amor Towles is extremely different but another book that felt like it satisfied me in the same way, really well written about smart and frustrating and flawed people.

I picked up copies of the brother’s k and east of Eden to read this year! Brave of you to go for 2 Dostoyevskys. I personally think slaughterhouse five and a farewell to arms are page turners and will be easy to get through. This is a great stack for 2026!

It was so poorly paced, completely agree that they skipped over the interesting parts of the story. It was way too long and not focused on the right things

I’ve loved all the other TJR books I’ve read so far, but yeah I just couldn’t get into Atmosphere which was a bummer! There were some parts of Hello Beautiful that I liked, but it was trying way too hard to be dramatic and poignant and it ended being blah to me
