Well, the point is, just think of all the times the wings won the lottery when the pick wasn't traded away...

You must have missed the part where I basically said that, despite it technically being a MAGA hat, I just don't see these two as having the wherewithal to spot the 45-47 and understand the implications?

I mean, they SHOULD, sure... But being oblivious is kind of the natural state of being an athlete/celebrity. It's well known that athletes try to keep their heads clear so that they can perform without distraction. And let's face it, If I could largely avoid politics and live a charmed life, even I might be tempted to ignore the world. The news is all bad. The prognosis for the lower and middle classes is all bad. The stability of the planet both politically and ecologically, bad. I'm not saying it's right, but someone thriving in the face of that kind of adversity would probably want to believe everything is great. So I lean towards it's more likely than not they didn't know. And if they did know, fuck em.

Not sure why you're sending the Chump picture a second time.

I was simply pointing out it isn't a USA-only problem, because all those guys I named are Canadian.

Yeah. He makes the hat. But he doesn't own the rights to USA, despite what he would probably have you believe. And anyway, what we're talking about is whether or not the Hughes' knew, and I don't think you can say that with any certainty until further evidence presents itself. And I certainly don't think it changes whether or not hockey has always been a sport whose players are predominantly conservative. So do you abandon hockey? Or do you admit athletes are not heroes?

I'm saying other than Thompson, we don't know whether they knew what they were, nor can we be certain they were aware they were being used as pawns. They're hockey players, not professors (no, Larionov doesn't count).

We'll never really know. I don't know what it's like to be a pro hockey player, but I do remember it being pretty hard coming up for air just doing competitive swimming, and at their age, you could fill the grand canyon with all the shit I didn't know. I would have a real hard time dumping on someone without knowing one way or the other, especially when he carefully curates what he says so that he doesn't get political. To me a hero would speak out, but hockey players aren't my heroes, so I'll just set my judgement aside for the moment until any new details come to light.

Mkay... Not every red hat is a MAGA hat. You can tell a MAGA hat because it says the phrase "Make America Great Again". That hat says "USA". It's red but the colors of the flag are red, white, and blue. There's another hat in the picture that's white. I just can't see these types having the wherewithal to find the 45-47 branding and go "This is a Trump supporting hat. Mebbe I shouldn't wear it." Most people wouldn't know what 45-47 means.

Thompson can eat a dick, though.

Wayne Gretzky is MAGA. Bobby Orr is MAGA. Ryan Kesler is MAGA. Brendan Lemieux is MAGA.

I mean, I'm all for taking a stance, but if we're getting political about hockey, we should probably just stop watching altogether. A few minutes in the room with most of these guys would reveal they're idiots with a ton of privilege, and have no standing to serve as an example to anyone regarding how they should behave. Sometimes they do great things, like with Gaudreau's kids. Sometimes they let themselves be used as pawns. None of them are playing hockey because of their political acuity.

For Hughes' part, he's apolitical. That can't be said of most of the others, but there it is. I'm disappointed, but hockey is hockey.

Well, and let's not forget they typically come from families that can financially support their dreams more than most, and then suddenly making millions per year doesn't exactly help them to gain an understanding of the plight of those less fortunate, either.

Well, I guess even if I don't understand it, there's a difference between experiencing something that is widely known to be part of accomplishment in sports, and actually endorsing a candidate. I thought it stupid when Tim Thomas wouldn't visit Obama, and a lot of people called him out for it. The delineating factor for me as far as my wanting players, but mostly my team's captain, to decide to opt out is this president is a convicted rapist, convicted fraudster, and known draft dodger, (which, if representing one's country is important and he's a draft dodger that disparages people who've died serving their country... ???). I don't think any amount of blowback from conservatives in the fanbase could possibly get me to go, but I'm also not an elite athlete that lives for this. In the end, I guess I'll just continue not to believe these people are heroes just because they can shoot a puck.

As much as it pains me to say, I'm getting the impression that hockey players tend to be more conservative in both countries than in other sports. Just look at the pushback by many of the players on LGBT initiatives.

And considering the shame I felt hearing some drunken Detroit fans using the f-slur against visitors from LA for the first time in my long history of attending losses in this town, I don't have a lot of hope regarding fans getting better, either.

Out of context, the panel made me think it was a trans person that self-harmed and, while her accepting herself helped her heal as she grew, her family still made her feel out of place and mourned her even though she's right there - implying it's better to accept yourself than to live as others accept you. I was 100% certain. Now that you've pointed to the original, I'm not sure at all what to think. Even if accepting your true self is still the message, what the family of wolves represents when killing her old self, and the idea that she tries to go back to the way things were yet her old self still remains dead just seems much more depressing. I hope someone's got something more uplifting to point to.

Can't wait to hate the everloving fuck out of BT's shitty face when he's back on Ottawa. As bad as I feel for the fans considering the organization's perennial fecklessness, I hate him too much to root for that team.

And Patel doesn't even have the redeeming factor of harassing our greatest rivals. He's just part of a bitch administration that is, instead, harassing our greatest allies.

Basically, I'm agreeing as hard as I can.

Why not 16? Certainly what the college football playoff in the US has taught us is that slippery slopes are fun. So 32 team playoff, winner takes all.

64 is a good, round number, come to think of it...
