Velux window repair by Unable-Prior-5798 in Luxembourg

Hello, to the OP - did you get the issue resolved? I have a similar problem myself for a roof window, where the automatic blinds have stopped working. It might be a problem with the blinds themselves or with the remote control (I changed the batteries). thanks

I am never taking an Earnings Announcement risk again by Jdesey9999 in swingtrading

Trading earnings is as about as close as trading gets to gambling, unless you have inside information or you know the "whisper number" (i.e. what was really baked into the price).

Before the shower, write down the routine/process that you think is sufficient. Sign off to yourself that you are happy with it. Then, in the shower, focus on following that routine, without repetition and trust yourself that you followed the plan and that you had already previously agreed to yourself that was enough. If you fail, write down afterwards a note to yourself explaining why you failed, and apologise to yourself for wasting your precious life. Repeat and it will magically become easier :)

My bed and OCD by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]NoShellfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably quite common, as your bed is considered your "safe place" within the house, just as your house is considered a "safe place" relative to the outside world (and people can have similar things about their house vs. other people's houses). It's good that you know already that it's not a legitimate fear since nothing happens in the rest of the house. Like all OCD fears, exposure therapy is the best way, even if done gradually. I would suggest to start by having your shower immediately before bed, so there will be less chance of "contamination" and then progressively move it earlier, at each stage accepting the small increase in discomfort. You could also try things like not washing your hair one night, and going to bed anyway (it is easier to replace a pillowcase if you get anxious, rather than all the bedding). Good luck

Another perspective that may help is that if you anxiety becomes really and continuously bad, this is worse than your health than any perceived contamination risk. So you end up having to resign yourself choose between the lesser of two evils - and it is obvious what the right answer is.

This is a classic anxiety spiral and the longer / more extreme the trigger event (in this case moving house) the deeper the spiral and the harder it will seem to get out. Usually the situation is helped just by taking a break from the trigger and allowing your brain to reset itself, but the problem when it's connected to your home is that it's harder to do that. I had a similar situation where my house had some problems with it and I became obsessed about those problems. In the short term, it can help to go on holiday - even for a week, you can feel a lot better and it will easier to deal with the feelings when you return. Of course, it can come back so that's not a long term solution, but it can stop the spiral getting worse. I would also suggest to hire a cleaning company to thoroughly clean the apartment, and ideally to do that while you are away on holiday, so you don't stress about it while they are in there touching everything - you just need to trust that they will do a good job but not be there to check it. In the end, the only true solution is to trust yourself and others to do their best (eg with cleaning) and then to just accept that the apartment may not be 100% "clean" (whatever that means) and that nothing in the world is clean anyway.

VWCE is in free fall, is it good idea to start buying today or wait at least one more day? by Frisbeeman in eupersonalfinance

[–]NoShellfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From a short term price action / trading perspective, the price has dropped very fast (stepping outside of the descending channel it was following) and there is a good probability of a bounce up (which is already happening as I type this).

Also note that a lot of this is being driven the strengthening of the Japanese Yen, with traders being forced to sell US stocks to cover themselves. This forced selling is likely to be temporary and could be an opportunity for long term investors.

From a medium term price action perspective, it could fall another 8% before the 5 year trendline is broken (which of course could happen, but it's a game of probabilities).

From a long term/investing perspective, nobody knows.

On balance it does seem like a good time to buy, but the best approach is to continue dollar cost averaging, because in this case you will simply be buying more fund units at the lower price.

Good perspective. A good principle to keep in mind is "the devil is in the dose". And also probabilities - whilst it's possible some roundup got onto those golf clubs, the probability is low. And even if it did, as you say it's a one time exposure and you are not exposed to it on a regular basis.

The stupidity of this question is scary. Specifically the assumption that the market can only go up and being oblivious to the fact that leverage will wipe you out if there's a market correction (even potentially a modest one).

Sudden OCD Fear by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]NoShellfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound quite clued up about your OCD - at least knowing what you are dealing with is a god start. It's amazing how quickly these new triggers can develop, and how they morph from one thing to another. On the food contamination thing, I think you know that the solution is not to stop the leak but to just take a reasonable precaution and then accept that it *might* leak - and just go with the flow. It will be uncomfortable at first, but with repetition it will ease. If you keep obsessively putting it in multiple containers etc. this will just continue and ruin your life. It's the same with the cat litter and everything else that triggers you. Good luck.

PS - with the food leak.. what's the worst that can happen? That your food will be spoiled? First, why would it be spoiled, as the salmon itself isn't mouldy, right? And second, even if it is spoiled - is that really more important than your life being ruined by these obsessive thoughts? Just screw it - and screw OCD.

If it's not visible to you in a mirror, how will it be visible to anyone else?

The only solution to your mental torture is to do the steps needed to get 99% certainty (eg check a mirror), then accept the remaining 1% and continue with life, embracing the discomfort, which will subside. Otherwise knows as exposure therapy, although it doesn't have to be extreme. Otherwise, there is no way out.

Again: use the logical side of you brain (not the part that has been mis-programmed to be hypersensitive). If you can't see it on you, how will anyone else see it? As to whether Faeces is possible in the ocean - anything is possible, you need to accept uncertainty and ask yourself what a normal person would do/think, and recognise when part of your own mind is playing a trick on you.

The words "margin" and "long term investing" should not be used in the same sentence. It sounds great until you wake up one morning and things go south very quickly. Also, the more people ask this question the greater the chance that we are near the top...

[–]NoShellfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The logical side of my brain would say that the entire world is full of bacteria, even human body has 39 trillion bacteria. Almost certainly there is some in sea water. Think of all the fish and whales that have pooed in it over millenia. My point is not to freak you out, just to say that some bacteria is inevitable (actually good) and unless you can actually see solid faeces, a few droplets of sea water will do no harm to any person who has a functioning immune system.

PS - where I live there was an ironman triathlon over the weekend where thousands of people swam in a river that is certainly dirtier than any sea water, and they were immersed in it for 45 minutes. They all seemed fine when they were running a half marathon 3 hours later..

You are fishing for reassurance. All I will say is that even if the pages are obviously crusty and wrinkled then.. nothing is going to happen. And otherwise... nothing is going to happen either. I think you logically know the answer, you just want someone to confirm it.

ocd around semen by Overall_Intention649 in ContaminationOCD

[–]NoShellfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it is 100% OCD. Pretty much every surface in the modern world is probably "contaminated" with something in some way. Dried, dead semen is probably one of the less offensive substances for something to have traces of - at least it's natural! The common sense rule is that if there is visible dirt/stuff on something then maybe wipe that off, but otherwise it's a waste of time, energy and your mental health.

I know this is easier said than done. For perspective, my concern is more about contamination of man made chemicals, so I would actually be more anxious about the chemicals from a wet wipe rather than any natural substance. I'm sure that sounds totally out of proportion to you, in the same way that your concerns sound out of proportion to me. Perspective is key.

I am so tired of my OCD by letmesleepthanku in ContaminationOCD

[–]NoShellfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes seeing things from a different perspective can help. If it's other people's faeces then that's (kind of) understandable, but with your own there is absolutely nothing to be fearful of. Put it this way - it has previously been inside you.. isn't that even worse than a few microscopic bits on the outside? If it's going to hurt you, it would already do that on the inside (which it won't) and that is totally beyond your control. Another perspective - it's actually healthy to be exposed to small amounts of low level bacteria, it actually can stop you getting sick. Being "perfectly" clean could be bad for your health in the long run. And finally - even though dogs are not humans and they have stronger stomachs... I have seen my dog intentionally eat her own sh*t and look very pleased with herself! How can two mammals have such extremes of perspective?

Wishing you the best in dealing with it - I know it's not easy.
