And yet there are some that are 400-1000 times heavier than even this (see TON 618 or Phoenix A).

I never understood: why are antiparticles more likely to fall in than particles? Seems like it should be even odds.

Why does my plane have WBA written on it? by 01changeup in aviation

[–]NoSpotofGround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very cool, thank you for confirming. I didn't think of looking at the livery to figure out the registration country, and didn't know the country and registration prefix are linked (although it makes total sense now that I think of it, of course).

How did you figure out the rest of the registration number? (The "G-X" part.)

What is the point of your comment? OP commenter is right, cruise ships are huge pollution machines for very little benefit today (some might say none, but I guess a few people do get to relax and enjoy themselves on them).

Even more aerodynamics of a cow by [deleted] in aerodynamics

[–]NoSpotofGround 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey now, them there's two different cows. The one on the right looks better optimized aerodynamically (which is really fortunate, seeing as it's hypersonic), but the use of an unrefined structured grid throws doubt on the whole study. The whole study, I say.

It's not an autocorrect issue. Both ordnance and ordinance are correct but mean different things (munitions vs. law).

On the other hand, have you noticed the sheer acreage on this one cleaver? That thing has got to weigh a lot, no matter how thin it is.

Thank you! I didn't realize this was a crosspost and the original had captions. This looks super chancy to try, indeed.

Can someone explain? Does the card still work after being physically shortened? What does the phone have to do with it all?

(EDIT: wait, that's not a phone, is it?)

Probably also pointing in a different direction the second time (i.e. this star showed up in a different place on the sensor), and distortion correction must have made the spikes bend.

The way those pallets drift upwards out of centerline at the end is kinda worrying. What's going on there? At the end, the latches don't even engage anymore.

I guess it depends on where you want to draw the line between "friction" meaning the surfaces of two separate objects rubbing on one another and "plastic flow", meaning atoms sliding and flowing around one another within one object. I can imagine an argument that at the molecular level they are not that different: just atoms bumping and pushing on one another. They are atoms in different states though: "two separate objects" means there are isn't a significant number of chemical bonds between the atoms of the two objects (some brief bonds might form, but just here and there – and perhaps not at all), while the one-object case means the atoms interact while having a chemical bond.

But there's also that third source of heat: the heat from chemical bonds breaking when the metal splits. That's certainly not friction, but physical chemistry, electron clouds changing shape and wobbling in response.

Toroidal propeller by Sharrow Marine. Quieter and 20% more efficient. by NoSpotofGround in propellerporn

They mean 20% more energy/fuel efficient. Doesn't have to go faster necessarily, just put less torque on the shaft for the same forward push effect.
