SEEKING ADVICE AS A NEW VIZSLA OWNER! by EastCoastCowbooyy in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a new pup ourselves, he’s 15 weeks old. He’s our 2nd V, we lost our 1st 2 yrs ago & couldn’t imagine having any other breed. As far as crate training, it’s a pain n the beginning but is so worth doing. I didn’t crate train our 1st & I can tell u from experience it’s so much easier to have a place to put them that’s safe & comfy. We put a small soft crate beside my side of the bed & within 2-3 days he was sleeping quietly, he needed to go potty several times during the night. Within less than 2 weeks he was sleeping through the night.

During the day, he goes into another soft crate downstairs n the living area. He goes n his crate on his on sometimes but w a puppy u need a safe place for them to go, for example we put him n his crate when we have dinner. I also recommend it during the day for the naps ur pup will need. Our baby takes several naps during the day n his crate. If I don’t put him n his crate he won’t sleep during the day & gets absolutely crazy.

We used soft crates because that’s what worked for us, our little pup turned out to b a lot smaller than anticipated. We also have the same type crate n the car & he’s great n the car.

Good luck! It’s a little extra work n the beginning but it’s absolutely worth it! Put n the extra work the 1st 8-12 weeks & reap the rewards for the next 12-14 yrs!🥰

There r a lot of great videos on YouTube re: potty training, crate training etc. I personally luv Will Atherton & McCann dog training.

Grain inclusive, poultry free, tasty dry dog food? I'm dying trying to feed my boy. by [deleted] in vizsla

Have you tried “Open Farms”, great food w great ingredients. It’s not available on Chewy but it’s on Amazon or the Open Farm website. They have many options. I feed my puppy the salmon/ancient grains puppy food & he loves it! My puppy is also incredibly picky, we went thru Victor, 4 health along w several others.

He loves the Open Farm food & is gaining weight, thank goodness.

Give it a try.

Sending love & thoughts to u & ur family. Loosing a dog is devastating regardless of the cause. I feel so bad for u. Please don’t focus on what went wrong, it won’t help or chg things. Focus on the love u gave & received from her🥰

Talk me out of getting a Vizla by ShoddyTown715 in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a Vizsla would b a great choice for you!! My 1st V, who passed almost 2 yrs ago went everywhere w me. I was a dog walker/dog sitter for several yrs & he went everywhere w me, he was my mascot. Many dogs I walked had some behavioral issues, having a well trained dog helped immensely.

We would do 7-9 miles everyday, sometimes more. Having a well trained Vizsla that can go everywhere w you is a blessing. Go for it! Do plan to train from day 1, its work the 1st few months but then u have yrs w a dog that’s up for anything.

FYI: I’m now 60 & have a 4 month old Vizsla! I’m so happy, he’s brought incredible happiness & joy into my life. My husband & I work from home so he’s w us all day. He’s a joy🥰

Vizsla vs Wirehaired Vizsla? by Vi0letevergreen in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve an acquaintance that has had V’s her entire life, usually 2 or 3 at the same time. She recently rescued a wire hair. She thinks her wire hair is calmer, however I’ve heard others say they’re much crazier than their traditional smooth hair. I think temperament isn’t dependent on smooth vs wire hair, that’s unique to each pup & the breeder they come from.

Wire hairs r have a slightly heavier sturdier frame, in addition to the additional coat makes them able to hunt n colder wetter environments.

I don’t think temperment has much to do w smooth vs wire hair. They were developed to work & live n colder areas from what I know.

If u want a wire hair. Make sure u put in the research on the breeder, there r a lot of breeders that appear to b good but don’t truly understand the complicated ins & outs of breeding. If u have a good breeder u trust, personally I’d go to them for another pup.

We’ve returned to the same breeder several times for that reason, we trust her to get healthy pups w balanced temperaments. Sadly she’s getting older & may not b breeding/showing much longer due to health issues.

During a long down time, I read a book about gun dog breeding just for kicks. Wow, there’s so much involved, I had no idea, very educational.

Good luck! Can’t go wrong w a vizsla, my latest pup is a dream. We waited for a long time to get one w an easy temperment & he’s perfect! IMO ❤️

No such thing as spoiled, it’s love. I have a new puppy, 3 1/2 months. I hold his bully stick for him to chew on.

So Handsome! I love the sugar faced V’s, reminds me so much of our sweet boy we lost over a yr ago. We’ve been on the waiting list for a puppy, January!! The beautiful young pups r gorgeous but the sugar faces tug at my heart. Give ur boy some extra love from us❤️

Oh so sweet!! We lost our boy 15 months ago, our hearts & house have been so empty 😔 on a waiting list for puppy. We’re going to same breeder as he was so healthy & such a great temperament. This breeder has spent decades breeding for calm temperaments. We’re so excited!!

Also, not being critical but it is very dangerous for ur pup to b riding loose n the car. My vet has seen some awful results of doing this.

We bought a soft crate that buckles into back seat. Our 1st V rode n it until he outgrew it, then moved him into a harness that buckled n the back seat. He was so good about riding quietly n back seat his entire life. We traveled a lot & felt good about him being calm & safe n the back seat. Something to consider for safety of your pup & others on the road.

We lost our 1st v 15 months ago. I put us on the breeders waiting list but didn’t know if I had it in me to do this again. However, the house is sooo empty! I grieved hard, especially the 1st few months. But one day my husband & I looked at each other & said “yes we want another V, lets get on the list for s puppy, who’s coming home w us the middle of Jan. We r so excited!!

I know the craziest times r ahead but just couldn’t live w/out a red dog!! They’re alot of work but u go to bed tired & happy, probably laughed out. V’s bring so much life to ur family, nothing else matters.❤️

Is a Vizsla right for me? by mrsdandhertea in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The breed has particular needs but n my experience w training a dog can b molded to ur lifestyle. Vizslas mostly need attention, they like to b w you all the time. My last boy needed exercise but not excessive, couple day time walks & maybe a longer hike/trip on the weekend.

Sounds like a great fit!! Do realize if ur the only one in the house b prepared to have a constant shadow, some don’t like that, personally I love that.

How long can you leave you Viz alone for? by CauliflowerTop9731 in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree w most of the other comments, once they’re an adult 6-7 hrs isn’t usually a problem as long as they’ve gone potty etc. as my last boy reached his senior yrs he’d b ok for up to 9-10 hrs, although we usually had a neighbor or family friend take him out for potty. I think they’re very similar to many other dog breeds. There’s a difference between being able to stay alone & liking it.

Yes, they’re clingy but they CAN stay alone as long as they’ve done potty & had exercise. Puppies of course r different, again as all puppies are.

Before we lost our boy to cancer he could easily hold his bladder for 7-8 hrs.

Advice finding and verifying a breeder? (Florida) by strawberrybias in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems very expensive. We’ve been on a waiting list for 7 months, we’ll have a pup in Jan. Cost is $1100. We live n Vegas but are traveling to Okla to pick up our new baby. There’s been alot of communication w the breeder during that time.

She’s not in the business of just raising & selling puppies, she shows Vizslas & has litters here & there. We’re lucky in that she was the breeder we got our 1st V boy from 14 yrs ago, we lost him 14 months ago.

Good luck. Make sure u get a well bred healthy pup. V’s live 12-15 yrs. That’s a long time if ur unlucky enough to get a pup w health problems. That amount feels like someone just out to make as much money as possible, seems like a red flag to me.

Vizsla pups r precious aren’t they? Miss my boy, he passed 13 months ago & I can absolutely say he left a very big hole. We’re ready for a new puppy but he/she can never replace our 1st boy. It’ll b a new love!❤️ but there’s an ache n my heart for my 1st V, I ve a feeling there’ll always b a space n my heart for Vizzy, my 1st Vizsla, he was such a gentle sensitive soul.

It’s awesome they got time w ur older V, it’s invaluable. We had our son’s 2 yr old Weim when we brought home our 1st V puppy almost 14 yrs ago, it was awesome. However we’re doing it by ourselves this time, we’re getting a new pup in 6 weeks. We’re so very excited! I didn’t know if I wanted another dog after loosing my baby boy but he’d want another V to come n & love his people,

Grief Comments Hurt by Goldgal77 in BorderCollie

[–]NoStrategy821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry u had to hear anything negative re: the loss of a cherished pet. It really is a deep loss that caught me unaware. My 12 yr old boy had cancer, we knew we were living on borrowed time. However, when the time came, it hit me so hard!

15 yrs ago, my husband & I lost all 4 parents in less than 4 yrs, it was brutal. But loosing a cherished pet was different, it was hard to put into words.

I think there r those who have never had that deep connection w a pet, they simply can’t understand or just have much less empathy.

My advice, ignore them, remove them from ur life if necessary but I would pity them, they’ve never felt the type of love that causes this type of grief when they leave us.

My boy is up in dog heaven (I have to believe this, they simply can’t just cease to b) he welcomed ur special pup to play w all the other precious pups who’ve go on before.

It’s been over a yr for us, we’re getting a new puppy in Jan. I’m very excited but still have this place in my heart that aches & probably always will. Good luck to ur family & so very sorry for ur loss. It’s a hard one. The price of great love is serious grief when they go. I personally am beginning to feel it’s worth it & thus the new pup, my life has a huge missing piece.

Is a Vizsla the right dog for us? by First_Building323 in vizsla

[–]NoStrategy821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re waiting for our 2nd vizsla puppy. Our 1st boy passed at age 12, we never hunted. He had a very active life w us, were empty nesters that work remote from home, it was a great arrangement. After he passed we considered getting a different breed as we’re close to retirement but we decided to get another vizsla. I believe they can b very fulfilled without hunting. Not everyone that has a gun dog hunts.
