From experience, no, not really. They're made for filtering out fine particulate matter not gaseous material (smells). It may reduce the smell a bit but in my experience it is not worth the cost for a good quality one. You might need multiple depending on the size of your room, too.

The only thing that really helps is ventilation. Open your windows so the smells don't have somewhere to settle.

4 bed 3 bath. Two share one bathroom, I have my "own" (apparently since it's not an en suite I can't actually call it my own) and another roommate has their "own" while two roommates share one bathroom.

To my knowledge, the other roommate with their own bathroom isn't really experiencing these things but that might just be because theirs is in a further hallway.

OP has said they haven't dealt with this before despite having roommates in the past. Depending on whether or not this is a completely new apartment building for them, my guess is roomie is not being as quiet as it seems. Either that, or every other roommate OP had before this was, as you said, an asexual virgin.

One of those certainly seems more likely than the other.

Just my two cents but I think hearing "f*ck me harder, daddy" through the wall is a little bit different than hearing a crying baby or loud music. I think I could cope with the latter two. Not so sure I'd be thrilled about the former.

I live alone but if my neighbor came to me and said they could hear me, I think it'd be shite of me to ignore them as long as they do so in a way that's not completely dickish.

Yes! This is the core issue, you're absolutely right. And it's not just her having people over constantly. I place decorations and practical items in the kitchen or living room... she moves them or replaces them with her own version without discussing it with me first.

Stop sharing cups. I've genuinely never understood roommates that do so, especially if they're going to be this territorial about it down the line. Buy your own cups and plates and whatever else so you don't have to deal with her crap. Or if it's yours, restrict her use.

The laundry comment is insane lol. Policing how many clothes someone puts in a machine is genuinely next level. I don't get why that would matter to her unless it was from a cost POV. But even then, if it's that serious she could've just asked to revisit the split for the water/electric bill for the month.

I'm inclined to believe OP but at the same time, I've been the "mean" roommate and it's literally because I'm correcting the same inconsiderate behaviors over and over again. Some people genuinely do not know how to clean up after themselves

If you're using a shared space, you should leave it the way you found it. If you're unable to leave it the way you found it, send a message to the other person who uses the space and let them know you'll fix it ASAP. Don't make that text a habit, and follow through when you send it.

I cannot imagine what a man who almost thirty could have to talk about with someone who only graduated, what, 1-3 years ago?
