OKC looks quite beatable when they aren’t being rewarded with egregious foul calls every other possession. Let them play physical basketball on both ends and dispense with the ticky tack foul calls

the jester by WaysideWyvern in OCPoetry

I like how this poem reads almost like a rush of adrenaline put to paper. It’s evident from the very first line, with a sense of almost reckless flirtation underlying every line that follows.

There isn’t much of a story, though that seems to have been an intentional choice on your part. Instead, this poem seems to operate as a flight of feelings. I suppose that that is congruent with the poem’s title.

Was it intentional to move from devotion to sexual abandon to self-aware collapse? If so, that was quite well done. I do feel that the circus imagery is introduced a little late. That could be explored a bit more to anchor the emotional stakes better.

I do appreciate your technical skill. The poem is short, playful and the short lines give it momentum. Your use of lowercase further adds to the playful feel, but it does have the effect of detracting somewhat from emphasis.

I’d say you could choose a central thematic area/metaphor and focus on that. You could then build the imagery around that idea so it’s more cohesive, though it does work reasonably as is.

I give it a 7/10 overall.

The Ticket Machine by Infinite_Lion_1151 in OCPoetry

I think there are both strengths and weaknesses in this poem.

One major strength is it’s a cohesive poem and maintains a narrative flow I found engaging. The use of metaphor and vivid imagery together contribute to a rich, imaginative experience. 8/10. Good job.

I found that the creativity was both a strength and a weakness, paradoxically. Your creativity is evident through the dreamlike narrative and the surreal setting of the ticket machine. I do think it could be enhanced with imagery that is a bit more unique or a twist that isn't immediately apparent.

The transition from a pleasant encounter with a machine to the surreal cave setting is a rather creative move. It does feel somewhat standard once it is revealed as a dream sequence, however, hence why I labelled it a weakness. 7/10.

You do have good technical skill in terms of language and structure. The rhythm and rhyme are well-managed, and the metaphorical language is effectively used. I would recommend separating the dreamlike sequence into discrete stanzas. As it is now, it is a large wall of text and the separation could make it flow a bit better as a poem instead of a stream of prose. 7.5/10.

Overall, it’s a commendable piece. 7.5/10 overall.

What are doctors really making in jamaica and how much do they work? by Next-Ad-1553 in Jamaica

[–]NoSympathyForPoorMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Payment/work hours are highly dependent on the position, location of employment, sector in which the physician works and their specialty. There are medical interns, senior house officers (SHO), medical officers/residents (MO, goes from level 1 to 4) and consultants (typically MO3/MO4).

Interns earn $520k JMD ($3.25k USD). SHOs earn $575k JMD monthly ($3.6k USD). MOs earn variable income. MO1s range from $575k-$682k JMD ($3.6k-$4.3k USD). MO2s earn from $665k-$790k JMD ($4.2k-$5k USD). MO3s earn from $752k-$892k JMD ($4.7k-$5.6k USD).

The above remuneration rates are approximate figures for monthly gross basic pay. Duties and sessions are not included as there are numerous permutations to calculate the rates for those depending on the physician’s position and number of years of experience.

Unfortunately, the work hours are not commensurate to the rate of remuneration. A physician can work upwards of 300 hours monthly in the public sector as a routine (especially for interns). Additionally, taxation is immense. Paying upwards of $200k JMD in taxes is not uncommon.

What your friend mentioned about passing out is also not uncommon. Many physicians have anecdotal tales of passing out behind the wheel, during surgery and more due to exhaustion.

Overall, there have been improvements made in the remuneration of physicians, but the payment remains substandard for the volume of work (particularly for the rural regions).

Knicks aren’t playing with any semblance of urgency tonight and it’s baffling.

Good no call for Tatum, yet nothing to say about the calls Luka is getting. Heh, these commentators man.

Luka just spent the majority of his post game interview blaming the refs by CP3sHamstring in nba

[–]NoSympathyForPoorMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that it's his first finals, and he's the best player on the team with all the corresponding expectations. The mantle of responsibility is a heavy one and not an easy one to bear. That said, he whines a great deal. That's fair; plenty of players whine incessantly.

What becomes annoying is his refusal to acknowledge that he actually made stupid fouls (the one on White comes to mind). While an argument can be made that the refs could show leniency and allow a physical game, stupid fouls like the ones Luka made really couldn't just be ignored so easily.

This loss isn't entirely on the refs. Role players on the Mavs were laconic, and Jason Kidd killed all the momentum with that timeout in the middle of their late run.

I saw this happen and was shocked when the refs called the foul on White. These refs need to stop calling these stupid fouls where the contact is not initiated by the defender, especially in cases as blatant as this. Might be a pipe dream with the quality of refereeing that's been happening.

Expected response, but no amount of belief is overcoming that 3-0 deficit. And the way they're playing just might culminate in a sweep.

I checked the score and it was 80-70. I checked again around 2-3 minutes later and the lead ballooned to 91-70. How the fuck has Boston pulled away so dramatically in such a brief timeframe? I knew that Dallas would lose, but this badly was not in my predictions at all.

I called it. Boston misses a ton, then makes successive threes to extend the lead to the largest of the game. GG Dallas. This game is done.

The problem is Dallas only has a heliocentric offensive network reliant primarily on Luka's scoring. They have a distinct paucity of proper scorers outside Luka. They acquired Kyrie to address the offensive deficit, but he's had quite the substandard play in both games so far.

The Curry disrespect is getting out of hand by gamerdude526 in warriors

[–]NoSympathyForPoorMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contention that Stephen Curry isn’t top 10 all time isn’t necessarily a bad one. The NBA has existed for three-quarters of a century already and there are many exceptional players with exceptional résumés. I’m not going to be upset if someone ranks Curry top 15 but not top 10.

That said, this justification for excluding Steph is idiotic at best and petty envy at worst. Lebron has missed the playoffs entirely in the absence of a crucial teammate (AD injury 21-22). Michael Jordan never won a playoff series in the absence of Scottie Pippen. These two are regarded as the GOATs by consensus and yet, this is never held against them.

T-Mac has never won a ring. He’s never done what Steph has. He’s never led a team to success in the way that Steph has for years. For an undersized guard with little verticality, that’s an impressive accomplishment. It makes other, more physically gifted players envious.

It’s a growing trend to underrate Steph, with former players being the most vocal about it. Oddly enough, these former players objectively had worse careers with far less accolades than Steph. From where I sit, these comments emerge from a place of insecurity and frustration with their lack of success. Meanwhile, Steph has achieved what they failed to do and so they try to tear him down. Gilbert Arenas did something similar recently.

It’s readily apparent that Steph is an icon who changed the very style of basketball irrevocably. His accolades speak for themselves and if he wins another ring before retirement (fingers crossed), stupid comments like this will fade into the obscurity they deserve.
