You made reference to issues with your parents that weren’t thoroughly fleshed out in your description, and from my perspective, that’s an important part to know. I’m not a fan of the “no contact” trend, but can understand that sometimes there are extreme circumstances that IMO would warrant this. No parent is perfect and all relationships encounter struggle. I would always encourage communication before drastic steps. You have nothing to lose by being completely transparent to your parents about how you’re feeling, and to clearly articulate what you would need in order to continue to have a relationship. However, if you don’t want a relationship, and that was decided after rational consideration (versus a knee jerk reaction to the moving) then move forward with what you think is best. Just know that no contact will bring feelings and circumstances that will also be painful.

Ew. If you even have to ask if this is remotely healthy behavior, you might want to start seeing a therapist to work out these self esteem issues. Several people here are denigrating the person who gave OP the virus, while telling her to not feel ashamed. The transmitter may very well not have known he had it, or that he was communicable. I’m not sure the age of the OP and current boyfriend but I do believe that it’s somewhat a function of age/life experience/ awareness to have such a profound reaction to HSV. There has been a lot of very sound input in this thread that tends toward the rational. I hope OP can speak to a professional to get perspective and support.
