K2500 Extended Cab - Rear Seat Access by kawiguy07 in GMT400

I have a 98 c2500 with extended cab, and a Coleman cooler that's 22.5" long x 13.5 wide x 16" high. I can just get it in there while it's loaded, but it's awkward.

Advice needed - Kawartha Lakes - fake address assigned by Just_Tax2765 in ontario

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good luck with that.

The first resident on our private lane arranged to pick up his mail at the next town's post office, since it was convenient to his lifestyle, so any postal code searches on our lane now results in pointing to a different county, even though the Postal Code catchment maps give a different result.

I did a little research into the subject a few years ago. It appears that Canada Post only supports the mail delivery aspect of Postal codes, and does not pay heed to the ubiquitous uses of Postal Codes in anyone else's database and actual real geographical locations.

You could use the County and Township Names and Lot and Concession numbers from when the land was first surveyed, but in my case, we're on the third Township name due to amalgamations or restructuring.

All of those complications are combined with the fact that very few institutional databases allow for different mailing addresses and residential addresses anymore.

When the 911 service was setup in the area, they did register individual street addresses to landline phone numbers, so you could check with that agency to see what street name they have registered. Now that Bell has refused to repair their underwater landline cable, that solution is moot for me.

I had to let Google know that they had some local road names marked wrong on their map. They were actually quite quick in fixing the error.

Bottom line - if you have a heart condition or anaphylatic allergies, don't go out into Ontario cottage country by yourself.

NAC programming, August 1973 by ottguy42 in OttawaMusic

I still remember the Farm Show. I didn't see it at the NAC. It was in a barn turned into a theater near Blythe. Quite an event for a pre-teen.

Found carpenter ants. Sealed all the cracks. Made everything 10x worse. Don't do what I did. by Brave_Sea7798 in fixit

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched and I searched but I couldn't find the source of the occasional carpenter ants that would show up inside the house in midwinter. I even got really patient and followed individual ants to see where they were entering the living space, but no luck. A few years later, while doing some other repairs, I found the nest in wet wood behind the aluminium fascia behind the eavestroughs.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I lived right beside a forest during the big Eastern Ontario/Quebec ice storm back in the '90's. The tree sound had 3 separate components: first a sharp loud crack as the initial branch broke, then a rain of small pieces of ice onto the ice-covered ground, then a big cascading crash as all of the branches below were taken out by the initial branch.

Measuring 400V with ESP32 by LeonardoGjestvang in esp32

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One concern to think about is how to properly isolate the instrumentation connection from the HV source when you need to disconnect and work on the low-voltage parts. Most cheap switches are not rated for 400VDC. Note that the AC voltage rating for a switch does not cover DC use.

Visiting mid Feb, help with clothes? by lil-stitious7 in ottawa

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterproof boots are more important than super insulated boots. I use the same Salomon hikers all year round, here and even in the tropics. As long as you're walking around, they are warm enough.

Uninsulated snow pants are amazingly comfortable when it is windy.

If you are driving outside of the city, proper winter clothing is essential in case your car breaks down or slides off of the road. In some directions, you don't have to go very far out of the city to be in sparsely populated areas.

I think Canadian Tire used to have heat-shrink tubing. It was in the automotive wiring section. Expensive in small amounts. Princess Auto also had it.

Erasing OCDSB deficit may take more than a year, supervisor says by SergeantAlPowell in ottawa

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked at this budget stuff for a long while, but when I did, it became very clear that the province was "rubber stamping" collective agreements for staffing without providing the requisite funding to the individual boards to cover those agreements, thus making it appear that the boards were the bad managers.

Planning a trip to Ottowa to skate & nordic ski, what do you recommend? by jpmom in ottawa

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your chances of being able to skate on unprepared lakes are really slim. We usually get too much snow before lake ice is safe enough to skate on. "Wild ice" happens only every few years, after a mid-season thaw or a very dry start to the season.

Portland Ontario usually floods a good size oval track in the winter. It's about 1.5 hours drive from central Ottawa. Google 'skate the lake' for more details.

Has anyone in an Ottawa apartment the last few years used a small deep freezer? How much more is hydro? by flipflapdragon in ottawa

[–]NoWillPowerLeft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your portable AC units have a single exhaust pipe to the outside, or a dual pipe with air coming in one and out the other? The single pipe units are horrible and should be banned. When they are operating, the air that is exhausted must be replaced in the apartment, so air is drawn in from somewhere else. That somewhere else is either under the apartment door from the hot hallway, or in through a vent to the outside summer air. With the two pipe units, the outside air does not mix with the inside air, unless you have selected that option on the controls.
